  • As the circumstance of the traditional system is changed according to power system deregulation, the simulation tool which should reflect market code providing market operating mechanism is needed to analyze an electricity market. This paper presents the development of Electricity Market Price Simulator for short term(EMPS) that is designed to imitate the Korean electricity market. The EMPS is developed in VB.NET and is composed if three functions that consist of calculating SMP for CBP market, MCP for TWBF market and LMP for LMP-market. To evidence the features and the performance of EMPS, a small two way bidding market with 12-bus system, one way bidding market for generator competition and LMP market with 5-bus system will be presented for the electricity market simulations using EMPS.

  • At present, the Korean electricity industry is undergoing restructuring and the Cost Based-generation Pool(CBP) market is being operated preparing for Two Way Bidding Pool(TWBP) market open. As the circumstance of the traditional system is changed according to power system deregulation, the simulation tool which should reflect market code providing market operating mechanism is needed to analyze an electricity market. This paper presents the development of an unique market simulator, Market Modeling and Price Simulator(MMPS) that is designed to imitate the Korean electricity market considering uniform price. The MMPS is developed in VB.NET and is composed of two modules that consist of market modeling and price simulation interfacing access database program. To evidence the features and the performance of MMPS, a small two way bidding market with 12-bus system and one way bidding market for generator competition will be presented for the electricity market simulations using MMPS.

  • Power System deregulation has become a worldwide trend which introduces competition in electric power system in order to realize efficient electricity production and investment. In this regard, it is very important to develop an electricity market simulator so that it is to analyze power market and study bidding strategies, market operation and market power and train market participants. In this paper, we introduce general functions and a structure of market simulator, also design the framework of the Korean market simulator based on core concepts of electricity market simulator.

  • Since the restructuring in electricity industry, single utility company, KEPCO, was being unbundled horizontanly and vertically, which resulted in 6 generation companies. Hence, electricity statistics system leaded by KEPCO is no longer efficiently sustainable. By introduction of electricity market, the importance of statistical information is getting higher and higher. From now on, the leading role played in statistical system in electricity field should be switched from KEPCO to government. This paper looks into change in statistical work driven by electricity and provides alternatives applicable to new electricity market. In addition, this paper provides new standard form for the collection of statistical data and construction of statistical system.

  • The economic operation of a utility in a deregulated environment brings about optimization problems different from those in vertically integrated one[1]. While each utility operates its own generation capacity to maximize profit, the market operator (or system operator) manages and allocates all the system resources and facilities to achieve the maximum social welfare. This paper presents a sequential application of non-cooperative and cooperative game theories in analyzing the entire power transaction process.

In this regards, it is very important to develop an electricity market simulator so that it is to analyze competitive market and train market operators and market participants. In this paper, we implement the algorithm of determining market clearing price as the first module of unique market simulator. The adopted and suggested algorithm is verified by modelling a simple market with a commercial market simulator(PLEXOS).

  • Deregulation in power industry has made the reactive power ancillary service management a critical task to power system operators from both technical and economic perspectives. Reactive power management in power systems is a complex combinatorial optimization problem involving nonlinear functions with multiple local minima and nonlinear constraints. This paper proposes a practical market-based reactive power ancillary service management scheme to tackle the challenge. In this paper a new model for voltage security and reactive power management is presented. The proposed model minimizes reactive support cost as an economic aspect and insures the voltage security as a technical constraint. For modeling validation study, two optimization algorithm, a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) method are used to solve the problem of optimum allocation of reactive power in power systems under open market environment and the results are compared. As a case study, the IEEE-30 bus power system is used. Results show that the algorithm is well competent for optimal allocation of reactive power under practical constraints and price based conditions.

  • With the deregulation of the power industries in many countries, the trend is towards accommodating more freedom and choice to the market participants and encouraging competition as much as possible in the power market. In this regards, the necessity of market simulation is increasing in order to guarantee a secure and reliable operation of an electricity market. This paper presents the technique of market simulation considering constraints such as energy resource and transmission interface using commercial market simulator.
