  • A system called demand response programs (DRP) is being introduced among various countries owing to the lack of new generation capacity and the higher fuel generation cost. It is a program which provides for the end-users to select their consumption of electricity by recognizing the value of their consumption in real time. That is, Demand Response can be defined as the changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns in response to changes in the price of electricity or other signals. It is expected that the effects of DRP are preventing price spike, improving supply reliability and social welfare and increasing option of customers. Considering the customer's thermal comfort zone, this paper determines the most profitable combination of optimal incentives and amounts of load reduction for a retailer to maximize profits according to predicted outdoor temperatures while implementing DRP.

  • In electric power industry. load balance has been one of the most fundamental and important management goals. Therefore. the strategy to achieve high quality load management now includes load balance besides the stabilization of electricity supply and quality management of electricity. Amongst many techniques of load management. direct load management has been actively studied and utilized to increase power facility and peak load suppression. Higher peak load situation is appeared during summer than during winter in Korea. and approximately 20% of the peak load is due to the load for air-conditioning. To cope with this peak load problem during summer KEPCO is performing a research project to develop a system to remotely control air-conditioning load using wireless communication. Currently, applicable facilities are limited to small-scale air-conditioning facility that has less than 2KW power capacity. This paper described the 1st year of efforts made in the study.

  • Restructuring of the electric power industry has brought the issue of market competitiveness to surface. Recent years have witnessed the appearance of a particular seller or group of sellers exercising market power in electricity supply. In fact, much scholarly work has been done on how to identify and mitigate such abuse by market management rules. In this paper we assess the possible market power on the basis of pivotal supplier test and propose the method to determine the reasonable quantity of long-term contracts which can play a crucial role in mitigating the market power for a pivotal player. Furthermore the market efficiency is guaranteed by making long term contracts with a pivotal player up to the quantity to ensure that the pivotal player has no incentive to abuse the pivotal quantity in the electricity market.

  • Demands for electricity are growing, whereas the rate of electricity infrastructure's construction declines gradually. To keep the balance of the demand and supply, the share of underground transmission line will be increased from 8.3% to 10.5% in 2020 but it will be accompanied with enormous public expenses. A great concern in high capacity transmission is on the increase so as to maximize the spacial efficiency. High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable is in the lime light which has the merits of environment-friendly, low transmission loss and high transmission with low voltage, but the reliability verification as a power system is yet to be solved. KEPCO completed the installation and acceptance of $3{\phi}$, 22.9kV, 1250A class HTS cable system in 2006 and the long term test is in progress. The test results focusing on long term reliability are presented in this paper.

  • Coal has made a wonderful contribution to the production of cheap electricity. Coal based power plants have been the backbone of world's electricity for a long time now. Coal while being cheap and easily available is also a source of various solid, liquid and gaseous effluents which are responsible for the environmental degradation. Environmental issues caused by coal need to be studied and analyzed, then a common global consensus must be formed. Efficient action must be taken against each and every type of pollutant that is produced by this particular industry. The research aims to provide a brief overlook of the environmental impact of India's coal-based power plants. The aim of this study is to introduce a novel environmentally feasible energy scenario for the future of Indian power sector which has been named as "OPES". OPES is mathematically simulated using the combination of GAMS and LEAP. OPES is simple to comprehend and can be reproduced easily for other case studies as well. Results show that OPES can help the Indian power sector to minimize its environmental impact without causing any problems in the energy supply.

  • The process of separating oxygen and nitrogen from the air is mainly performed by electric liquefaction, which consumes a lot of electricity, resulting in higher operating costs. On the other hand, when used for cold energy of LNG, electric power can be reduced compared to the electric Linde cycle. Currently, LNG cold energy is used in the cold refrigeration warehouse, separation of air-liquefaction, and LNG cold energy generation in Japan. In this study, the system using LNG cold energy and the Linde cycle process system were simulated by PRO/II simulators, respectively, to cool the elevated air temperature from the compressor to about $-183^{\circ}C$ in the air liquefaction separation process. The required amount of electricity was compared with the latent heat utilization fraction of LNG, the LNG supply pressure, and the LNG cold energy usage. At the air flow rate of $17,600m^3/h$, the power source unit of the Linde cycle system was $0.77kWh/m^3$, compared with $0.3kWh/m^3$.

  • Solar energy forecasting is essential for (1) power system planning, management, and operation, requiring accurate predictions. It is crucial for (2) ensuring a continuous and sustainable power supply to customers and (3) optimizing the operation and control of renewable energy systems and the electricity market. Recently, research has been focusing on developing solar energy forecasting models that can provide daily plans for power usage and production and be verified in the electricity market. In these prediction models, various data, including solar energy generation and climate data, are chosen to be utilized in the forecasting process. The most commonly used climate data (such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, solar radiation, and wind speed) significantly influence the fluctuations in solar energy generation based on weather conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid forecasting model by combining the strengths of the Prophet model and the GRU model, which exhibits excellent predictive performance. The forecasting periods for solar energy generation are tested in short-term (2 days, 7 days) and medium-term (15 days, 30 days) scenarios. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional Prophet model by more than twice in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and surpasses the modified GRU model by more than 1.5 times, showcasing superior performance.

FedEx Earth Smart: Practices of Environment-Friendly Management

  • With the recent increasing interest in sustainability management, the latest environmental report tends to be substituted by the expanded sustainability management report. In this work, I would like to introduce the management pattern of a global enterprise that values environmental soundness (environmental friendly) and implements eco-friendly measures. The enterprise chosen in this study is FedEx. In this article, FedEx case is presented how companies can adopt environmental friendly management in their businesses. FedEx has maintained an eco-friendly management since the introduction of the company's eco-friendly transport trucks in 2003, following its development in 2000. In 2005, it installed a solar power plant that can supply up to 80% of the electricity consumed by Oakland Logistics Center in California, USA. FedEx has published the "Global Enterprise Citizenship Report," which contains its business developments in 2009. FedEx has worked hard to minimize the influence caused by packaging of goods to the environment and appealed to customers to use recycled products as much as they can. FedEx also encourages customers to use packaging materials efficiently. A considerable amount of energy has been expended in the eco-friendly programs of FedEx. Although thousands of FedEx vehicles and aircraft operate daily with using large amounts of electricity and fuel, FedEx focuses on energy savings and global environment protection.

  • With current real economic growth of more than 10% per year, the Chinese energy consumption is rapidly increasing. Coal supply consists of the vast majority of China's total energy consumption requirements in 2008. China, the largest energy consumer, is expected to be heavily dependent on coal for future power generation, too (IEA,2009). A growing concern on global warming, on the other hand, drives Chinese government to declare her commitment to the reduction of CO2 emission by 2020. In this paper, China's energy market is examined for the current and future primary energy mix. Coal is found to be the biggest part accounting for 68.7% of total primary energy consumption while coal-fired power accounts for over 80% of the total power generation. The importance of Clean Coal Technology is being discussed based on the findings of the importance of coal in China's economy and its sustainable development. Among the technologies involved, a brief investigation of IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) technology with a review on current IGCC projects in China are provided from the perspective of environmental benefits. Studies on regional Chinese power market is also conducted. It is found that the regulated power tariff in electricity system makes the power suppliers suffer from financial loss and changes in the electricity price system is under serious consideration by Chinese government. Even though Chinese power market system causes difficulties of commercialization for IGCC technology, the potential benefits will be high due to China's huge requirements of power generating capacity and its heavy reliance on coal if the electricity price system can be changed smoothly.

한국과 일본의 장기 저탄소 에너지 시나리오에 대한 메타 리뷰

  • This paper compared historical energy use from 2000 between Japan and Korea and reviewed literature of mid-and long-term low carbon energy scenarios and plans in both countries released since 2000. In terms of energy use pattern, there are similarities between Korea and Japan; high dependence on energy imports, high proportion of manufacturing industry among OECD countries, closed electricity system disconnected with foreign countries, and high proportion of nuclear power generation with low proportion of renewable electricity despite of high potential of renewable energy. Differences are as follows; decreasing trend in Japan and increasing trend in Korea in terms of energy demand and supply, difficulty of exchanging electricity between regions in Japan unlike Korea, and prospect of nuclear power, that is, curtailing in Japan while expanding in Korea according to governmental plan. Energy Basic Plan in both countries established before nuclear accident in Fukushima required expanding about two times of nuclear energy by 2030, while civil society's energy scenarios suggested reducing energy demand, phasing-out nuclear power, and expanding renewable energy. This paper will serve as a base for future studies about long-term energy scenarios and plan in Japan and Korea.
