Cure monitoring and nondestructive characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated by the measurements of electrical resistance and acoustic emission (AE). Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to infinity when the fiber fracture occurred, whereas that of the electrodeposited composite increased relatively broadly up to infinity. As curing temperature increased. logarithmic electrical resistivity of steel fiber increased. On the other hand, electrical resistance of carbon fiber decreased due to the intrinsic electrical properties based on the band theory. The apparent modulus of the electrodeposited composite was higher than that of the untreated composite due to the improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS).
In order to investigate ground state change visually in physical model during centrifuge testing, electrical resistivity survey was adopted. Commercial resistivity survey equipment verified at various in-situ sites was utilized. The resistivity survey equipment installed in centrifuge facility was remotely controlled through intranet and electrical resistivity images obtained while centrifuge testing was being checked by real-time inversion. To verify the stable operation of the developed resistivity survey system, preliminary tests were conducted. Model ground was uniformly constructed using unsaturated soil and saline water was dropped on the ground surface to simulate contaminant flow situation. During the 10 g centrifuge tests, electrical resistivity was continuously detected and the testing results were compared with those of identically carried out 1 g centrifuge tests. In addition, the electrical resistivity was directly measured immediately after the centrifuge test by open cutting the model. Finally, reliability of electrical resistivity survey in the centrifuge test was verified by comparing those testing results.
In this study, the resolution capabilities of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the monitoring of $CO_2$ injection are investigated. The pole-pole and bipole-bipole electrode configuration types are used between two uncased boreholes straddling the $CO_2$ plume. Forward responses for an initial pre-injection model and three models for subsequent stages of $CO_2$ injection are calculated for the two different electrode configuration types, noise is added and the theoretical data are inverted with both L1- and L2-norm optimisation. The results show that $CO_2$ volumes over a certain threshold can be detected with confidence. The L1-norm proved superior to the L2-norm in most instances. Normalisation of the inverted models with the pre-injection inverse model gives good images of the regions of changing resistivity, and an integrated measure of the total change in resistivity proves to be a valid measure of the total injected volume.
Electric resistivity monitoring was applied to evaluate the soft ground in reclaimed land in order to figure out the applicability of physical prospecting. For this, electrical resistivity monitoring data were acquired for total three months and analyzed those data with independent inversion, time-lapse inversion, and 4D inversion methods. The result was compared for various inversion methods so as to figure out what showed the soft soil most properly. Moreover, drilling and CPT(Cone Penetration Test) data were also used in order to find out if each of those inversion methods could distinguish either bed rock or the soft soil clearly. And according to the result, time-lapse inversion showed less inversion artifacts than independent inversion, so it could indicate the soft soil better. If data gained for a longer period than three months are used, 4D inversion has been found to be a more efficient analysis method than the time-lapse inversion method. Electrical resistivity monitoring on the soft soil has been found to be a useful method that can analyze the spatio-temporal electric state of the ground serially.
Piping, a common form of internal embankment erosion, is caused by progressive movement of soil particles through an embankment. The phenomenon commonly occurs with precursory signs of development of fractures in dam structures, but also occurs without any noticeable signs in dams that showed satisfactory dam performance for several years, due to dissolution of soluble material in an embankment. While piping accounts for nearly 50% of the causes for dam failure, few studies have been made for systematic evaluation of the phenomenon. In this study, we attempted to monitor the changes in electrical resistivities of fill-dam material while a saddle dam is dismantled for the construction of emergency spillways of Daechung dam. Two artificial subhorizontal boreholes were drilled into the embankment structure to simulate piping along the two artificial flow channels. Monitoring of changes in electrical resistivity showed an increase in resistivity values during piping. Thus, the investigation of resistivity over time could be an effective method for piping prediction.

We applied both SP monitoring and pole-pole array resistivity surveys and SP survey and dipole-dipole array resistivity survey to leakage problems in several embankments and dike, respectively, to estimate and detect the zone of leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. According to this situation, SP monitoring and resistivity survey using pole-pole electrode array, which is relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity(EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of the embankment to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincide with tidal variations at each embankment. Based on the survey results, it is concluded that both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
The thermal contact conductance at different temperatures and with different electrode forces and zinc coating morphology was measured by monitoring the infrared emissions from the one dimensionally simulated contact heat transfer experiments. The contact heat transfer coefficients were presented as a function of the harmonic mean temperature of the two contacting surfaces. Using these contact heat transfer coefficients and experimentally measured temperature profiles, the electrical contact resistivities both for the faying interface and electrode-workpiece interface were deduced from the numerical analyses of the one dimension simulation welding. It was found that the average value of the contact heat transfer coefficients for the material with zinc coating (coating weight from 0 g/$mm^2$to 100 g/$mm^2$) ranges from 0.05 W/$mm^2$$^{\circ}C$ to 2.0 W/$mm^2$$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range above 5$0^{\circ}C$ harmonic mean temperature of the two contacting surfaces. The electrical contact resistivity deduced from the one dimension simulation welding and numerical analyses showed that the ratio of electrical contact resistivity at the laying interface to the electrical contact resistivity at the electrode interface is smaller than one far both bare steel and zinc coated steel.
Structural health monitoring is important for the safety of lives and asset management. In this study, numerical models were developed for the piezoresistive behavior of smart concrete based on finite element (FE) method. Finite element models were calibrated with experimental data collected from compression test. The compression test was performed on smart concrete cube specimens with 75 mm dimensions. Smart concrete was made of cement CEM II 42.5 R, silica fume, fine and coarse crushed limestone aggregates, brass fibers and plasticizer. During the compression test, electrical resistance change and compressive strain measurements were conducted simultaneously. Smart concrete had a strong linear relationship between strain and electrical resistance change due to its piezoresistive function. The piezoresistivity of the smart concrete was modeled by FE method. Twenty-noded solid brick elements were used to model the smart concrete specimens in the finite element platform of Ansys. The numerical results were determined for strain induced resistivity change. The electrical resistivity of simulated smart concrete decreased with applied strain, as found in experimental investigation. The numerical findings are in good agreement with the experimental results.

We practiced fresh water injection test to identify its applibility as a method of seawater intrusion mitigation technique, and monitored the change of borehole fluid conductivity and the behavior of injected fresh water using borehole multichannel electrical conductivity monitoring and well-logging, and DC resistivity and SP monitoring at the surface. Well-logging and multichannel EC monitoring showed the decrease of fluid conductivity due to fresh water injection. We note that such an injection effect lasts more than several month which means the applibility of fresh water injection as a seawater intrusion control technique. Although SP monitoring did not show meaningful results because of weather condition during monitoring and the defects of electrodes due to long operation time, DC resistivity monitoring showed its effectiveness and applicability as a monitoring and assessment techniques of injection test by means of imaging the behavior and the front of fresh water body in terms of the increase of resistivity with reasonable resolution. In conclusion, we note that geophysical techniques can be an effective method of monitoring and evaluation of fresh water injection test, and expect that fresh water injection may be an practical method for the mitigation of seawater intrusion when applied with optimal design of injection well distribution and injection rate based on geophysical evaluation.
Salinity of soil under the plastic film houses in Korea is known as a significant factor to lower the crop production and to hamper the sustainable agricultural land management. In this study we propose a field monitoring technique to examine the methods applied to minimize the adverse effect of salts in soil based on the relationship between soil electrical characteristics and soil properties. Field experiments for 4 different treatments (water only, fertilizer only, DTPA only, and DTPA and fertilizer together) were conducted on soils at the plastic film house built for cultivating a cucumber plant located at Chunan-si, Chungchungnam-do in Korea. The electrical resistivity was measured by both a dipole-dipole and wenner multi-electrodes array method. After the electrical resistivity measurement we also measured the soil water content, temperature, and electrical conductivity on surface soil. The resulted image of the interpreted resistivity by the inversion technique presented a unique spatial distribution depending on the treatment, implying the effect of the different chemical components. It was also highly suspected that resistivity response changed with the nutrients level, suggesting that our proposed technique could be the effective tool for the monitoring soil water as well as nutrient during the cropping period. Especially, subsoils under DTPA treatment at 40 to 60 cm depth typically presented lower soil water accumulation comparing to subsoils under non-DTPA treatment. It is considered that DTPA resulted in increase of a root water uptake. However, our demonstrated results were mainly based on qualitative comparison. Further experiments need to be conducted to monitor temporal changes of electrical resistivity using time lapse analysis, providing that a plant root activity difference based on changes of soil water and nutrients level in time.
