  • The dielectric breakdown of epoxy composites used for transformers was experimented and then its data were applied to Weibull distribution probability. First of all, speaking of dielectric breakdown properties, the more hardener increased, the stronger breakdown strength became at low temperature because of cross-linked density by the virtue of ester radical. The breakdown strength of specimens with filler was lower than it of non-filler specimens because it is believed that the adding filler forms interface and charge is accumulated in it, therefore the molecular motility is raised and the electric field is concentrated. In the case of filled specimens with treating silane, the breakdown strength become much higher. Finally, according to Weibull distribution analysis, reducing breakdown probability of equipment insulation lower than 0.1% level requires the allowable field allowable field intensity values to be kept under 21.5 MV/cm.

  • In this paper, the interfacial dielectric breakdown phenomenon of interface between Epoxy/EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) was discussed, which affects stability of insulation system of power delivery devices. Specimen structure was designed by using MAGSOFT's FLUX2D based on the finite elements method. Design concepts is to reduce the effect of charge transport from electrode in the process of breakdown and to have the tangential electrical potential with the Epoxy/EPDM interface. AC interfacial breakdown phenomenon of was investigated by variation of interfacial conditions oil and temperature which are supposed to have influence on the interfacial breakdown strength. Interfacial breakdown strength was improved by spreading oil over interfacial surface. The decreasing ratio of the AC interfacial breakdown strength in non-oiled specimens was increased by the temperature rising and its of oiled specimens was not affected by temperature.

  • The inhibiting effects of electrical treeing and insulation properties of LDPE contained with treeing inhibitors was studied under radiation environment. Barbituric acid and its derivatives were selected as treeing inhibitors. The inception voltage and growth of tree, AC breakdown strength, volume resistivity, high frequency capacitance, and dissipation factor were observed as a function of dose(up to 1000 kGy). And also, measurements of thermo-luminescence(TL), and gel content were carried out. Crosslinked low density polyethylene(XLPE) contained with treeing inhibitors shows better insulation characteristics such as electrical tree propagation, AC breakdown strength, and volume resistivity than those of pure LDPE. The most effective treeing inhibitor was found on the barbituric acid contained XLPE.

  • Internal voids located within an insulation will arise partial discharge that causes local breakdown and even the entire insulation breakdown. For HV apparatuses, it is usual case that several voids are formed within non-uniform electric field condition rather than single void within uniform field, which can be solved analitically. The purpose of this work is to study partial discharge and breakdown characteristics of an insulation according to the distribution pattern of two disc-type voids that are located within non-uniform field. The results from numerical field analysis and experiments show that the electric field within the voids decreases as they are arranged more serially, which accordingly results in the increase of partial discharge inception field(PDIF) much higher than that of single void model. With parallel arranged voids, PDIF is almost the same as that of single void model. On the other hand, AC breakdown strength decreases as voids are arranged more serially, which is a natural result considering the reduction of effective insulation thickness. For parallel voids, this effect cannot he noticed where as they show different pattern compared with single void and serial void models in $\Phi$-Q-N analysis. Considering these results may leads us to the conclusion that, in the evaluation of insulating products through PD test, it is not sufficient to determine only PDIV or existence of PD at predetermined voltage level. We could evaluate more accurately by considering all the available data such as PDIV, PD magnitude, PD occurring phase, number of PD pulses, and etc.

  • In this paper, we investigated the effects of gap length and tip radius influenced in breakdown of mineral based insulation oil Electrode system was needle-plane geometry It is to model conductive extrusions in oil filled electrical power apparatus. The tip radius of needle electrode was 5, 10, 20 and 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. We measured breakdown voltage for each of tip radius with increasing electrode gap, 2mm to 12mm. It was calculated electrical breakdown strength at tip using Mason\`s equation from breakdown voltage As gap lenght increased. breakdown strength increased linearly. But, as tip radius of needle increased, breakdown strength decreased exponentially. It can be explained by tole phenomenon that electron is easily injected, as tip radius increases, and effective work function decreases. When appling DC voltage. breakdown 7tr7ilgtll was higher wheal polarity of needle was negative than positive. It is because of the space charge effect ill accordance with the influence of liquid motion.

  • In recent times, gas insulated medium voltage (MV) circuit breakers (CB) form a vital component in power system network, considering its advantages such as reduced size and safety margins. Gas insulation characteristics of circuit breakers are generally measured by lightning impulse (LI) test according to IEC standard 60060-1 as a factory routine test. Considering the environmental issues of $SF_6$ gas, many research works are being carried out towards the mixture of $SF_6$ gases for high voltage insulation applications. However, few reports are only available regarding the LI withstand and streamer propagation characteristics (at both positive and negative polarity of waveform) of $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture insulated medium voltage circuit breakers. In this paper, positive and negative polarity LI tests are carried out on 22 kV medium voltage circuit breaker filled with $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture at different gas pressures (1-5 bar) and at different gas mixture ratios. Important LI parameters such as breakdown voltage, streamer velocity, time to breakdown and acceleration voltage are evaluated with IEC standard LI ($1.2/50{\mu}s$) waveform. Weibull distribution analysis of LI breakdown voltage data is carried out and 50% probability breakdown voltage, scale parameter and shape parameter are evaluated. Results illustrate that the $25%SF_6+75%N_2$ gas filled insulation considerably enhances the LI withstand and breakdown strength of MV circuit breakers. LI breakdown voltage of circuit breaker under negative polarity shows higher value when compared with positive polarity. Results show that maintaining the gas pressure at 0.3 MPa (3 bar) with 10% $SF_6$ gas mixed with 90% $N_2$ will give optimum lighting impulse withstand performance of 22 kV MV circuit breaker.

  • [ $SF_6$ ]gas, which has an excellent dielectric strength and interruption performance, is used in various applications such as gas insulated switchgear (GIS) in substations. However, since $SF_6$ has a high global warming potential (GWP), it is necessary to find an eco-friendly alternative insulation gas. In order to examine the possibility of using alternative insulation gases for $SF_6$ in power distribution system equipment, the dielectric strength and physical phenomena of dry air in a quasi-uniform electric field are investigated experimentally in this paper. As a result, the breakdown voltages for positive polarity are higher than those for negative polarity under impulse voltage applications. The negative 50[%] flashover voltage, $V_{50}$ of dry air under conditions above 0.4[MPa] gas pressure, is higher than 150[kV], that is the basic impulse insulation level of distribution equipment. The $V_{50}$ increases linearly with increasing the gas pressure, regardless of the waveform and polarity of the applied impulse voltages. The voltage-time curves are dependent on the rise time of the impulse voltage and gas pressure. Furthermore, streamer discharge was observed through light emission images by an ICCD camera under impulse voltage applications.
