Water tree degradations have been considered as one of the most important causes of failure in underground distribution cables with polymeric insulation. Water tree growth is a preliminary step in the sequence of electrical tree initiation and electrical breakdown of the insulation. In this paper, needle electrode is made use of the etching methods and the pellet type specimen is made to observe the water tree in succession. In previous methods are able to observe the tree degradations without cutting and dyeing. The water tree image is recorded on VTR with CCD camera. The tree length of X, Y axis direction and aging area(treeing area) are calculated with image measurement. As a result of this study, water tree is observed by non-destructive method. Electrical tree is initiated from needle electrode tip only but water tree is initiated from total area of water electrode. Electrical tree owing to water treeing is initiated at low electric field and grown with discontinuously. Namely, water tree is shown up a different characteristics of tree growth.
Inception and propagation of electrical tree and properties of Partial discharge(PD) pulses accompanying with tree as a function of needle tip radius in low density polyethylene were discussed. To study on these characteristics in different tip radius, we used specimens with needle-plane electrode system made of LDPE, observed inception and propagation of electrical tree by optical microscope with computer and investigated the characteristics of the phase resolved PD pulses accompanying with propagation of electrical tree. The PD quantities detected and analysed were PD magnitude, mean phase angle, average discharge, and the statistical characteristics of the PD pulses. As the tip radius ${\gamma}$ increases, tree inception stress E$\sub$i/ converges to constance value. This result suggests that tree inception stress E$\sub$i/ increases due to stress relaxation when the tip radius is small. Branch-type electrical tree was formed When E$\sub$i/ is 640-750[kV/mm]. bush-type electrical tree when E$\sub$i/ is 370∼400[kV/mm], branch-like electrical tree when E$\sub$i/ is 370-400[kV/mm].

This paper presents a statistical approach to analyze electrical tree inception voltage, electrical tree breakdown voltage and tree breakdown time of unsaturated polyester resin subjected to AC voltage. The aim of this work was to show that Weibull and lognormal distribution may not be the most suitable distributions for analysis of electrical treeing data. In this paper, an investigation of statistical distributions of electrical tree inception voltage, electrical tree breakdown voltage and breakdown time data was performed on 108 leaf-like specimen samples. Revelations from the test results showed that Johnson SB distribution is the best fit for electrical tree inception voltage and tree breakdown time data while electrical tree breakdown voltage data is best suited with Wakeby distribution. The fitting step was performed by means of Anderson-Darling (AD) Goodness-of-fit test (GOF). Based on the fitting results of tree inception voltage, tree breakdown time and tree breakdown voltage data, Johnson SB and Wakeby exhibit the lowest error value respectively compared to Weibull and lognormal.
When the high voltage is applied on insulation materials that have voids and impurities inner one, then probability of electrical tree inception is increased at defects. Electrical tree gives a profit to degradation analysis, because it is possible to observe by eyes and provides electrical degradation step. And electrical tree is divided to three types in usual - tree type, bush type and chestnut type tree. But these three types are divided not by method of quantitative analysis but visual and experiential analysis. In this paper, three types of electrical tree were calculated by quantitative analysis using fractal mathematics and classified to fractal dimensions (FD). FD of tree types are 1.1$\sim$1.4, bush types are 1.4$\sim$1.6 and chestnut type trees have above 1.6 FD.

Correlation between propagation of bush-type electrical tree and internal partial discharges(PD) was discussed. We used specimens with needle-plane electrode system made of LDPE(Low Density Polyethylene), observed inception and propagation of electrical tree by optical microscope interfaced with computer and investigated characteristics of phase resolved PD pulses accompanying with propagation of electrical tree. Electrical tree generally growed bush-type tree. PD data detected and analyzed were average discharge current and statistical operator of q-n, $\psi$- $q_{avg}$, $\psi$-n, ${\psi}-q_{max}$ distribution. Parameters used were skewness, kurtosis, average discharge phase, cross-correlation factor, asymmetry and etc. In generally, average discharge current had good linear relationship with propagation of bush type electrical tree on this experiment. Peak discharge magnitude and repetition rate were increased, but they had not good linear relationship.p.
The phenomenon of water tree degradation of underground distribution power cables is taking place in polymeric insulation materials under the existence of water and application of electric stress, but water tree is not easy to observe, o water tree features in power cables are shown after cutting and dying with methyleneblue. In previous method, it is impossible to acquire continuous treeing data, and when the insulation material has been cut, the micro crack(water tree) has been damaged. In this paper, to overcome these deflects, the etching method is made use of making needle electrode about 170[${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$] diameter, and AgNO$_3$(silver nitrate) solution is used as liquid electrode to accelerate the growth of water trees. As a result of this study, water tree is observed in real-time with microscope. Electrical tree owing to water treeing is initiated at low electric field and grown with discontinuous. Namely, water tree is shown up a different characteristics of tree growth.
In order to improve the reliability of XLPE cables, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of electrical and water tree degradation. Especially, electrical tree initiation and propagation are important in XLPE cable insulation. This paper deals with the changes of electrical properties of XLPE cable insulation with electrical tree degradation. To understand the electrical properties of XLPE insulation, specimens were prepared by 22.9kV distribution cable and made in a type of block. Ogura needles having tip radius of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were inserted into each block pieces. AC voltages of 8kV, 10kV and 12kV at 60Hz were applied to needle. We investigated the relationship between electrical properties(PD quantity, tan$\delta$ and DC current) and the growth of electrical tree. The electrical properties of the specimens were measured from initiation of tree to breakdown and their characteristics were analyzed.
Water treeing in underground distribution power cable is not easy to observe by nondestructive method and it has very complex patterns. This study describes the principles and practices of a continuous observation of initiation and growth of tree in polymeric insulation material using an image measurement technique. Using this technique we could observe water tree and the growing process of electrical tree due to the water tree and the growing process of electrical tree due to the water tree. All of these growing process is analyzed quantitatively by image measurement program composed of borland c++. We fabricated the thin film type specimen to observe water tree easier and also the needle electrode was prepared by etching method using electrolytes. Initiation and the growth of three was observed somewhat different depending on the applied voltage and the water electrode. AgNO$_3$solution electrode accelerates the initiation and the growth of water tree, compared to those of distilled water electrode. The water and the electrical tree occurred by water tree has discontinuous growth characteristic.
