The grid-connected energy storage systems, which could increase the reliability, efficiency, and cleanliness of the grid is presently restricted by the high cost of batteries. This problems could be solved by batteries retired from automotive services. These batteries can provide a low-cost system for energy storage and other applications such as residential applications and renewable energy integration. This paper gives an overview of technical requirements for the re-use of the electric vehicle batteries in energy storage systems.Firstly, the motivation of research is introduced. Secondly, the technologies needed for the re-use of the battery are introduced such asidentification of the battery characteristics, grading of the aged batteries, identification of the state-of-charge and state-of-health of the battery and suitable power electronic converter topologies. In addition the control strategy to maximize the battery lifespan and bypass the faulty batteries is presented and one-stop solution to implement the above mentioned technologies are also given.
A hybrid sinusoidal-pulse current (HSPC) charging method for the Li-ion batteries in electric vehicle applications is proposed in this paper. The HSPC charging method is based on the Li-ion battery ac-impedance spectrum analysis, while taking into account the high power requirement and system integration. The proposed HSPC method overcomes the power limitation in the sinusoidal ripple current (SRC) charging method. The charger shares the power devices in the motor inverter for hardware cost saving. Phase shifting in multiple pulse currents is employed to generate a high frequency multilevel charging current. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed HSPC method improves the charger efficiency related to the hardware and the battery energy transfer efficiency.
The development for Eco-friendly cars has been expanded as the concern about environmental pollution and a rise in gas prices. The Electric Vehicle(EV) and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV) are generally connected on distribution power systems to charge the traction batteries. The growing number of EV/PHEVs could have a effect on distribution power systems and result in overload of power utilities and power quality problems. In order to reduce the adverse effect on distribution power systems, the influence of electric vehicle loads should be evaluated. In this paper, the influence of electric vehicle loads is evaluated by using OpenDSS(Open Source Distribution System Simulator) according to the penetration rate of electric vehicle.
Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment(EVSE) is a system or an equipment to supply electric power for charging the traction batteries on the electric vehicle. Control Pilot is an electric signal generated by EVSE and is transmitted to the electric vehicle by a vehicle coupler and a contact. The duty cycle of control pilot determines the maximum current to be drawn by electric vehicle. When the duty cycle is 5%, it is indicated that digital communication is needed. This paper deals with the data format and definition about communication scheduling through the inband signal on the control pilot of EVSE.
There is no clear standard for estimating the power distribution of fuel cells and batteries to meet the required power in hydrogen electric vehicles. In this study, a hydrogen electric vehicle simulation model equipped with a vehicle electric component model including a fuel cell system was built, and a power distribution strategy between fuel cells and batteries was established. The power distribution model was operated through two control strategies using step control and fuzzy control, and each control strategy was evaluated through data derived from the simulation. As a result of evaluation through the behavior data of state of charge, fuel cell current and balance of plant, fuzzy control was evaluated as a proper strategy in terms of control stability and durability.
Along with global environmental issues, the size of the electric vehicle market has recently skyrocketed. Various efforts have been made to extend mileage, one of the biggest problems of the electric vehicles, and development of batteries with high energy densities has led to exponential growth in mileage and performance. However, proper thermal management is essential because these high-performance batteries are affected by continuous heat generation and can cause fires due to thermal runaway phenomena. Therefore, thermal management of the battery is studied through the optimal design of the guide vanes, while utilizing the existing battery casing to ensure the safety of the electric vehicles. A battery from T-company, one of a manufacturer of the electric vehicles, was used for the research, and the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX V20.2, was used for analysis. The guide vanes were derived through optimal design based on a genetic algorithm with flow analysis. The optimized guide vanes show improved heat removal performance.
Reusing electric vehicle batteries after they have been retired from mobile applications is considered a feasible solution to reduce the demand for new material and electric vehicle costs. However, the evaluation of the value and the performance of second-life batteries remain a problem that should be solved for the successful application of such batteries. The present work aims to estimate the remaining useful life of Li-ion batteries through the neuro-fuzzy system with the equivalent circuit parameters obtained by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). To obtain the impedance spectra of the Li-ion battery over the life, a 18650 cylindrical cell has been aged by 1035 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, the capacity and the parameters of the equivalent circuit of a Li-ion battery have been recorded. Then, the data are used to establish a neuro-fuzzy system to estimate the remaining useful life of the battery. The experimental results show that the developed algorithm can estimate the remaining capacity of the battery with an RMSE error of 0.841%.
In the Electric Vehicle(EV) driving system, the Battery Management System(BMS) is very important and an essential equipment. Particularly, BMS monitors the State of Charge(SOC), voltage, current, and temperature of the battery modules when Electric Vehicle is in the state of motoring or charging. Major roles of BMS are like these the first, estimation of State of Charge(SOC), the second, detection of the unbalance of the voltage between battery modules, the third, control of the available limit of the voltage and temperature of batteries by monitoring the batteries status during motoring or charging. In this research, We have focused on estimating SOC of battery according to the status of Electric Vehicle and the BMS operation algorithm. The result for algorithm of SOC estimation is presented. It have been modified, compensated, and verified by means of the experiment.
