New Ramp-reset Waveform for Fast Addressing in AC-PDPs

  • We present new ramp-reset waveforms that realize fast addressing in AC-PDPs. These waveforms distort the distribution of wall charges on the surface of a phosphor layer: hence, the enhanced electric field helps to ignite a cell faster. They also reduce the black luminance: the divide of erasing ramp down discharges into two parts, i.e. a surface discharge and a vertical discharge, makes lower luminance.

  • This paper investigates magnetic field behavior and its iron losses in the stator core using electrical steels. The analysis model is a brushless motor with the permanent magnet. The elliptical rotating and alternating flux distributions with non-sinusoidal waveforms are obtained by Finite Element Method and then their harmonic components are extracted. Based on these results, the local iron losses in the stator core caused by the harmonic flux are calculated. Furthmore, this paper explains the relation between the complex flux waveform and iron loss produced in each part of the stator core.

  • The shorted-turn sensor for synchronous generator's field winding has been developed. The sensor, installed in the generator air-gap, senses the slot leakage flux of field winding and produces a voltage waveform proportional to the rate of change of the flux. For identification of reliability for sensor, a shorted-turn test was performed at the Seoinchon combined cycle power plant on gas turbine generator. This sensor will be used as a detecting of shorted-turn for synchronous generator's field winding.

  • An effective method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on round rotor windings is described. Shorted-turns can have significant effects on a generator and its performance. A method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on rotor windings is described. The approach used is to measure the rate of change of the air-gap flux density wave when the rotor is at operating speed and excitation is applied to the field winding. The inter-turn short circuits sensor for synchronous generator's field winding has been developed. The sensor, installed in the generator air-gap, senses the slot leakage flux of field winding and produces a voltage waveform proportional to the rate of change of the flux. For identification of reliability for sensor, a inter-turn short circuits test was performed at the West-Inchon combined cycle power plant on gas turbine generator and steam turbine generator. This sensor will be used as a detecting of shorted-turn for field winding of synchronous generator. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and operation of a sensitive inter-turn short circuits detector. In this paper, development of inter-turn short circuits sensor for field winding of synchronous generator and application in a field.

  • A large steel industry which has nonlinear loads including electric arc furnaces is one of the extra high voltage customers. These nonlinear loads generate harmonic currents and create distortions on the sinusoidal voltage of the power system. Harmonic field measurements have shown that the harmonic contents of a waveform varies with time. A cumulative propablistic approach is the most commonly used method to solve time varying harmonics. In this paper the in varying harmonics of electric arc furnace loads are evaluated by international harmonic standards(IEC 61000-3-6, IEEE 519 and JIS C 61000-3-2).

  • This paper presents the method for an estimation of discharge current waveshapes in short gap discharge by radiated electromagnetic fields. The method of current waveform estimation described is using the one antenna method(single field method) and two antennal method(complex field method) with a measured electric or magnetic fields at given field point by a time domain antenna. In order to verify the availability of the estimation theory, the discharge current waveshape estimation was performed by one and two antenna methods using the measured electric fields of Wilson & Ma and compared with experiments.

  • This paper describes the electrical breakdown characteristics of broken toughened glass stem insulators by comparing with those of sound ones. The broken toughened glass stem insulators were taken from the electric railway field. According to the international standards, the sound and broken toughened glass stem insulators were tested in electrical strength. In the test, the power frequency voltage and the impulse voltage with a standard waveform were applied to the insulators. The power frequency voltage tests were carried out under both dry and wet condition and the impulse voltage tests under only dry condition. The acquired results were compared one another and discussed in electrical breakdown characteristic by analyzing the flashover progress pictures. As a result, the electrical strength of the broken toughened glass insulators was acquired and the processes of the surface breakdown on the toughened glass insulators were confirmed.

  • High speed electric trains have nonlinear loads including converters and inverters for the control synchronous motors. Harmonic field measurements have shown that the harmonic contents of a waveform varies with time. Direct application of the harmonic assessment to the snapshot measurements would result in ambiguous conclusions depending on which instant is sampled. A cumulative probablistic approach is the most commonly used method to solve time varying harmonics. Harmonic simulations are performed to evaluate the harmonic voltage and current distortions throughout the system. This paper provides an in depth analysis on harmonics field measurement of the high speed electric train loads, harmonics assessment by the international harmonic standards IEC 61000-3-6 and IEEE Std. 519-l992, and harmonics simulation using EDSA program for the case study.

  • Polyethylene is widely used as the insulator for power cable. To investigate the conduction mechanism for power cable insulation under ac high field, it is very important to acquire the dissipation current under actual running field. Recently, we have developed the unique system, which make possible to observe the nonlinear dissipation current waveform. In this system, to observe the nonlinear properties with high accuracy, capacitive current component is canceled by using inverse capacitive current signal instead of using the bridge circuit for canceling it. We have already reported that the dissipation currents of $40\;{\mu}m$ thick LDPE film at 10 kV/mm and over 140 Hz, it starts to show nonlinearity and odd number's harmonics were getting large. To investigate the conduction mechanis ms in this region, especially space charge effect, various kinds of estimation, such as time variations of instantaneous resistivity for one cycle, FFT spectra of dissipation current waveforms and so on, has been examined. As the results of these estimations, it was found that the dissipation current will depend on not only the instantaneous value of electric field but also the time differential of applied electric field due to taking a balance between applied field and internal field. Furthermore, two large peaks of dissipation current for each half cycle were observed under certain condition. In this paper, to clarify the reason why it shows two peaks for each half cycle, the film thickness dependences of dissipation current waveforms were observed by using the three different thickness LDPE films.
