In the present work, a series of experiments have been performed on electro-hydrodynamic atomization of non-conducting liquid using a charge injection type nozzle. Effects of liquid flow rate, input voltage, and distance between the needle and the ground electrode (nozzle-embedded metal plate) have been examined. For fixed electrode distances, total and spray currents increase with the increase of liquid flow rate and input voltage. When the distance between the needle tip and the ground electrode becomes closer, the total, leakage and spray currents increase, while the onset voltage for the dielectric breakdown decreases. When the electric field strength of the liquid jet exceeds that for the air breakdown, a portion of the electric charges in the liquid jet is dissipated into the ambient air, and the charge density shows a limiting value. Atomization quality can be improved by increasing the liquid flow rate due to the higher charge density and the enhanced aerodynamic effect.
In recent years, inkjet printing technology has received significant attention as a micro/nanofabrication technique for flexible printing of electronic circuits and solar cells, as well for biomaterial patterning. It eliminates the need for physical masks, causes fewer environment problems, lowers fabrication costs, and offers good layer-to-layer registration. To fulfill the requirements for use in the above applications, however, the inkjet system must meet certain criteria such as high frequency jetting, uniform droplet size, high density nozzle array, etc. Existing inkjet devices are either based on thermal bubbles or piezoelectric pumping; they have several drawbacks for flexible printing. For instance, thermal bubble jetting has limitations in terms of size and density of the nozzle array as well as the ejection frequency. Piezoelectric based devices suffer from poor pumping energy in addition to inadequate ejection frequency. Recently, an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing technique has been suggested and proposed as an alternative to thermal bubble or piezoelectric devices. In EHD jetting, a liquid (ink) is pumped through a nozzle and a strong electric field is applied between the nozzle and an extractor plate, which induce charges at the surfaces of the liquid meniscus. This electric field creates an electric stress that stretches the meniscus in the direction of the electric field. Once the electric field force is larger than the surface tension force, a liquid droplet is formed. An EHD inkjet head can produce droplets smaller than the size of the nozzle that produce them. Furthermore, the EHD nano-inkjet can eject high viscosity liquid through the nozzle forming tiny structures. These unique features distinguish EHD printing from conventional methods for sub-micron resolution printing. In this presentation, I will introduce the recent research results regarding the EHD nano-inkjet and the printing system, which has been applied to solar cell or thin film transistor applications.

The electric transport of the mixture of hydrochloric and phosphoric acids through strong base (Neosepta ACM) and weak base (Selemion AAV) anion-exchange membranes was investigated. The instantaneous efficiency of HCl removal from the cathode solution, $CE_{Cl}$, with and without $H_3PO_4$ was determined. It was found that $CE_{Cl}$ was 0.8-0.9 if the number of moles of elementary charge passed through the system, $n_F$, did not exceed ca. 80% of the initial number of HCl moles in the cathode solution, $n_{Cl,ca,0}$. The retention efficiency of $H_3PO_4$ in that range was close to one. The transport of acid mixtures was satisfactorily described by a model based on the extended Nernst-Planck and Donnan equations for $n_F$ not exceeding $n_{Cl,ca,0}$. Among the tested model parameters, most important were: concentration of fixed charges, the porosity-tortuosity coefficient, and the partition coefficient of an undissociated form of $H_3PO_4$. For the both membranes, the obtained optimal values of fixed charge concentration, $\bar{c}_m$, were up to 40% lower than the literature values of $\bar{c}_m$ obtained from the equilibrium measurements. Regarding the $H_3PO_4$ equilibria, it was sufficient to consider $H_3PO_4$ as a monoprotic acid.
This paper presents research on low-voltage microgrids to maintain a continuous power supply to critical loads on grid-connected islands in Korea. The low-voltage microgrids of this paper focused on that changes public office buildings into uninterrupted microgrids by autonomous operation. For this, a microgrid controller (MGC) and a power conditioning system (PCS) that allow a seamless transfer between grid-connected and grid-isolated operation are proposed. The proposed PCS operates with a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) switch and employs a simple structure. It supplies power continuously without operators through a coordinated operation between MGC and PCS. In addition, proposed MG has a schedule operation for minimizing electricity charges and provides ancillary services that enable the utilization of resources according to the operation purpose of utility distribution networks. To demonstrate the uninterrupted low-voltage microgrid proposed in this study, a microgrid was implemented and tested in a public office building in Anjwa Island, Jeollanam-do in Korea. A seamless, autonomous operation history, despite system disturbances, was obtained through a long-term demonstration of operation. The results showed that the proposed microgrid technology can be used to achieve energy resilience in grid-connected island areas.
This work carried out for the effective synthesis characteristics of graphene nanowall film by controlling the electric field in a RF plasma CVD process. For that, the bipolar bias voltage was applied to the substrate such as Si and glass materials for the best chemical reaction of positive and negative charges existing in the plasma. For supplying the seed formation sites on substrate and removing the oxidation layer on the substrate surface, the electron bombardment into substrates was performed by a positive few voltage in hydrogen plasma. After that, hydrocarbon film, which is not a graphene nanowall, was deposited on substrates under a negative bias voltage with hydrogen and methane gases. At this step, the film on substrates could not easily identify due to its transparent characteristics. However, the transparent film was easily changed into graphene nanowall by the final hydrogen plasma treatment process. The resultant raman spectra shows the existence of significant large 2D peaks corresponding to the graphene.
A triboelectrostatic separation system for removing unburned carbon from coal fly ash is designed and evaluated. Fly ash from a coal-fired power plant is used as an accepted additive in concrete where it adds strength, sulfate resistance and reduced cost, provided acceptable levels of unburned carbon are maintained. Unfortunately, unburned carbon in coal fly ash absorbs some of other additives and reduces the concrete strength. This paper describes to investigate dry triboelectrostatic process to separate unburned carbon from coal fly ash and utilize it into economically valuable products. The laboratory-scale triboelectrostatic separation system consists of a particle feeding system, a tribocharger, a separation chamber, and collection systems. Particles of unburned carbon and fly ash can be imparted positive and negative surface charges, respectively, with a copper tribocharger due to differences in the work function values of the particles and the tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. Results showed that fly ash recovery was strongly dependent on the electric field strength and the particle size. 70wt% of fly ash containing 6.5wt% of carbon contents could be recovered at carbon contents below 3%. The triboelectrostatic separation system showed a potential to be an effective method for removing unburned carbon from coal fly ash.
A large amount of electrostatic charges is often generated on polymer powders in fluidized bed and thereby may lead to electrostatic problems. In this study, to evaluate electrostatic hazards of powder in fluidized bed, the electric field(E[v/m]) and the charge amount(q[c/g]) during fluidizing were monitored. We also investigated the Minimum Ignition Energy(MIE [J]) of sample powder used in fluidized bed with the Hartman vertical-tube apparatus. The batch-type fluidized bed system and 2kg as Polypropylene(PP) resin powders were used in the experiments. The following results were obtained: (1) Even when a safe margin of several times was considered, the values of E obtained with PP powder in this paper did not exceed 3 to 5kV/cm, at which an incendiary electrostatic discharge could occur. (2) the ave. q was -0.26${\mu}$C/g during fluidizing. This value was high enough to cause electrostatic agglomeration and adhesion. (3) the entrained PP powder in upper column due to fluidizing could be ignited by electrostatic discharges of 71mJ.
Metal-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor(WFIS) capacitors using rapid thermal annealed LiNbO$_3$/AlN/Si(100) structure were fabricated and demonstrated nonvolatile memory operations. The capacitors on highly doped Si wafer showed hysteresis behavior like a butterfly shape due to the ferroelectric nature of the LiNbO$_3$ films. The typical dielectric constant value of LiNbO$_3$ film in the MFIS device was about 27, The gate leakage current density of the MFIS capacitor was 10$^{-9}$ A/cm$^2$ order at the electric field of 500 kV/cm. The typical measured remnant polarization(2P$_{r}$) and coercive filed(Ec) values were about 1.2 $\mu$C/cm$^2$ and 120 kV/cm, respectively The ferroelectric capacitors showed no polarization degradation up to 10$^{11}$ switching cycles when subjected to symmetric bipolar voltage pulses of 1 MHz. The switching charges degraded only by 10 % of their initial values after 4 days at room temperature.e.
Ultrafine particles have been widely used in many high technology industrial areas. The spherical nonagglomerated and uniform nanometer-size SiO$_2$particles are synthesized by the direct injection of TEOS(Tetraethyorthosilicate) using electro-hydrodynamic spraying method. Electro-hydrodynamic spraying can generate submicron-size TEOS droplets having high electric charges by applying a high electric field between the liquid injection nozzle and the reaction tube. These TEOS droplets are evaporated, and thermally decomposed or oxidized to produce nanometresized SiO$_2$particles in the reaction tube. Spherical, nonagglomerated and ultrafine particles are generated in various conditions and examined by using SEM and SMPS. As the total gas flow rate in the furnace changes from 1.5 lpm, the mean diameter of SiO$_2$particle decreases from 120 nm to 68 nm. The synthesized particle charging fractions are also investigated.
By development of renewable energy and more efficient facilities in an increasingly deregulated electricity market, the operation cost of distributed generation (DG) is becoming more competitive. International environmental regulations of the leaking carbon become effective to reinforce global efforts for a low-carbon paradigm. Through increased DG, operators of DG are able to supply electric power to customers who are connected directly to DG as well as loads that are connected to entire network. In this situation, a community energy system (CES) with DGs is a new participant in the energy market. DG's purchase price from the market is different from the DG's sales price to the market due to transmission service charges and other costs. Therefore, CES who owns DGs has to control the produced electric power per hourly period in order to maximize profit. Considering the international environment regulations, CE will be an important element to decide the marginal cost of generators as well as the classified fuel unit cost and unit's efficiency. This paper introduces the optimal operation of CES's DG connected to the distribution network considering CE. The purpose of optimization is to maximize the profit of CES. A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) will be used to solve this complicated problem. The optimal operation of DG represented in this paper would guide CES and system operators in determining the decision making criteria.
