  • Recently, due to various environmental problems such as global warming, increasing of international oil prices and exhaustion of resource, a paradigm of world automobile market is rapidly changing from vehicles using internal combustion engine to eco-friendly vehicles using electric power such as EV (Electric Vehicle), HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid electric Vehicle) and FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). There are many driving cycles for performance evaluation of conventional vehicles. However there is a lack of researches on driving cycle for EV. This study is composed of part 1 and part 2. In this paper part 1, in order to develop urban driving cycle for performance evaluation of electric vehicles, Gwacheon-city patrol route of police patrol car was selected. Actual driving test was performed using EV. The driving data such as velocity, time, GPS information etc. were recorded. GUDC-EV (Gwacheon-city Urban Driving Cycle for Electric Vehicles) including road gradient was developed through the results of analyzing recorded data. Reliability of the driving cycle development method was substantiated through comparison of electricity performance. In the second part of this study, the developed driving cycle was compared to simulation result of the existing urban driving cycle. Verification of the developed driving cycle for EV performance evaluation was described.

  • The conventional phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter with an LC filter has been widely used for high-power applications of over 1.0 kW. However, the PSFB converter cannot obtain optimal power conversion efficiency during the battery charging in electric vehicle (EV) on-board battery charger applications because of its unique drawbacks, such as a large circulating current and very high voltage stress in the rectifier diodes. As a result, the converters with a capacitive filter, such as LLC resonant converters, replace the PSFB converter in the EV chargers. This study analyzes the problems of the PSFB converter for EV on-board charger applications in detail. Moreover, the newest converters based on the conventional PSFB converter are reviewed. On the basis of the reviews, new PSFB converter topologies are proposed for EV charger applications. The new topologies are formed by connecting the rectifier stage in the PSFB converter with the output of an LLC resonant converter in series. Many problems of the conventional PSFB converter for EV charger applications can be solved and the performance can be more improved because of this structure; this idea is confirmed by an experiment consisting of prototype battery chargers under the output voltage range of 250-450 Vdc at 3.3 kW.

  • An electric vehicle (EV) not only receives electric power from the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), but it also exchanges the information regarding charging process with the power gird through the EVSE. However, the EV and EVSE communicate using the ISO/IEC 15118 standard while the EVSE and power grid communicate using the IEC 61850 standard. Therefore, the EVSE should support both the ISO/IEC 15118 and IEC 61850 standards, and provide a data mapping function between the two communication protocols so that the EV and power grid, which support different protocols, can communicate with each other throughout the charging process. In this paper, we propose a mapping method of the EVSE, which converts the ISO/IEC 15118 data to IEC 61850 and vice versa, based on the XML schema of each protocol. The proposed method converts the data using the XSL (eXtensible Stylesheet Language) method, which defines the data mapping between two XML schemas. Our approach is more flexible and easier to maintain against changes in charging scenarios and the standards than other existing approaches such as one-to-one data mapping methods.

  • The development for Eco-friendly cars has been expanded as the concern about environmental pollution and a rise in gas prices. The Electric Vehicle(EV) and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV) are generally connected on distribution power systems to charge the traction batteries. The growing number of EV/PHEVs could have a effect on distribution power systems and result in overload of power utilities and power quality problems. In order to reduce the adverse effect on distribution power systems, the influence of electric vehicle loads should be evaluated. In this paper, the influence of electric vehicle loads is evaluated by using OpenDSS(Open Source Distribution System Simulator) according to the penetration rate of electric vehicle.

  • Electric vehicles (EV) are emerging as the future transportation vehicle reflecting their potential safe environmental advantages. Vehicle to Grid (V2G) system describes the hybrid system in which the EV can communicate with the utility grid and the energy flows with insignificant effect between the utility grid and the EV. The paper presents an optimal power control and energy management strategy for Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) charging stations using Wind-PV-FC-Battery renewable energy sources. The energy management optimization is structured and solved using Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) to determine and distribute at each time step the charging power among all accessible vehicles. The Model-Based Predictive (MPC) control strategy is used to plan PEV charging energy to increase the utilization of the wind, the FC and solar energy, decrease power taken from the power grid, and fulfil the charging power requirement of all vehicles. Desired features for EV battery chargers such as the near unity power factor with negligible harmonics for the ac source, well-regulated charging current for the battery, maximum output power, high efficiency, and high reliability are fully confirmed by the proposed solution.

  • In this study, the acceleration performance improvement was analyzed for a 2-speed transmission applied EV. An EV simulator was developed to analyze the EV acceleration performance. The EV simulator includes a load transfer model between the front and rear. Thus, the EV simulator can analyze the acceleration performance difference between the front-and rear-wheel drive EVs. From the simulation results, it is deduced that the acceleration performance can be improved by 7.96% for the front-wheel drive EV and 16.10% for the rear-wheel drive EV. The 2-speed transmission can improve the acceleration performance without decreasing its maximum velocity. Moreover, the 2-speed transmission can improve the acceleration performance of the rear wheel drive more than that of the front-wheel drive EV.

  • Recently, many studies have suggested that an electric vehicle (EV) is one of the means for increasing the reliability of power systems in new energy environments. EVs can make a contribution to improving reliability by providing frequency regulation in power systems in which the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology has been implemented and, if economically viable, can be helpful in increasing power system reliability. This paper presents a stochastic method for optimal coordination of charging and frequency regulation decisions for an EV aggregator using the Least Square Monte-Carlo (LSMC) with modeling of electricity price uncertainty. The LSMC can be used to assess the value of options based on electricity price uncertainty in order to simultaneously optimize the scheduling of EV charging and regulation service for the EV aggregator. The results of a numerical example show that the proposed method can significantly improve the expected profits of an EV aggregator.

  • Due to restriction of vehicle emissions and high demand for fossil fuels nowadays, car manufacturers around the world are looking into alternative ways in introducing new car model that would vastly captured the market. Thus, Electric Vehicle (EV) has been further developed to take the advantage of the current global issues on price of fossil fuels and impact on the environment. Since car battery plays the crucial role on the overall performance of EV, many researchers have been working on improving the component. This paper focused on the reliability of EV battery which involves recognizing failure types, testing method and life prediction method. By focusing on these elements, the reliability feature being identified and as a result the batteries life will be prolonged.
