  • In recent years, it has been a worldwide trend that many power utilities gave their attention to develop and operate their power plants, substation and distribution systems. Following this trend, KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) has developed many electric automation systems with various communication networks. It has been natural that the automation systems are just focused on to remote devices when they come to be designed. But, we have to shirt the focus to the automation system itself. There are many problems in maintenance and integration of the automation systems. When an automation system can't control some remote devices, there is no way to get why and which part(Master, Network, Master-side Modem or Remote-side modem, Remote Device, etc.) of the system has problems. Moreover the system just directly links to another automation system. If the system has to link many systems, it needs the linker per each systems. So, we need a new concept to resolve that problems, and develop the Intelligent and Integrated Gateway(IIG) for the automation systems for easy maintenance and integration.

  • KEPCO enforces the development about distribution automation technology continuously for 10 years and reached in fair level present. And distribution automation system was constructed actively meantime, its establishment will be completed 100% at late 2002s. Distribution automation system had been developed also in Japan, U.S.A and Europe etc. In japan, distribution automation system was established all business office to whole county. Lately, there is examining distribution automation expansion actively in developing country including China. Therefore, we try to analyze domestic and foreign technological variance as that examine foreign distribution automation trend and the development direction of domestic distribution automation technology forward.

  • Over the past $2{\sim}3$ years power utilities have shown a marked change in attitude by an ever increasing interest in using relay communication features. As yet there is no accepted international standard for communication protocol in automation systems. Recent work within the UCA work group has resulted in the proposal, UCA 2.0, as the informative interface for automation systems. This proposed standard embodies the generic principles developed and used within generic protocol. This paper describes and analyses various communication protocols for automation systems in electric power companies.

  • Power Companies worldwide are undergoing tremendous change in the Automation issues. It becomes a worldwide trend that the power utilities focus their attention to the automation of their power plants and substation systems, employing recent advanced communication protocols. In this paper, we discuss the standard communication protocols which can be applied in the automation systems to help utilities reduce their operation and maintenance costs while at the same time meeting new requirements for communications to RTUs and intelligent electronic devices(IEDs). Especially, we introduce EC 61850 protocol which is developing for international standard by IEC.

  • There are many applicable services such as remote metering, load control, distribution line automation, Pole transformer Monitoring having their own networks in the electric power company. The application of the optical network technology as the back-born network to the Automation Systems in KEPCO is potentially beneficial in reliability, speed, and expandability. The 1-core and 2-core optical modems were developed and used by the Distribution Automation System. But, They had some disadvantages and advantages. So, We designed the new optical modems applied each advantages. This paper presents some of design efforts and test results for the multi-channel optical modem at KRPRI.

  • In recent years, it is a worldwide trend that many power utilities focus their attention to employ up-to-date communication technology to the automation of their power plants and distribution systems. Automation Systems in Korea was installed using twisted pair cable(TPC), power line carrier(PLC), coaxial cable(CA), wireless network(wireless data, TRS and PCS). Among the communication media only Satellite Communication guarantees the reliable communication in case of emergency such as a flood, a heavy snow and an earthquake. It can integrate two-way satellite systems to existent nationwide SCADA controlling points of electric power transmission & distribution system that enables real time remote monitoring and controlling automatically. This paper presents some of design efforts for the satellite communication network as the media of Automation Systems.
