Methods: The study subjects were lowest-income(basic living allowance) and lower-income elders who were registered for home visiting services at five District Health Centers in Seoul. Interview data were collected from 280 elders and analyzed. Using SPSS/WIN 21, $x^2$-test and t-test were conducted to analyze the relationship between the subjects' characteristics and their suicidal ideation, and logistic regression was done to identify factors affecting suicidal ideation. Results: Of the subjects, 48.6% had suicidal ideation for the last one year. Self-evaluated psychological status, quality of sleep, depression, and loneliness were affecting factors to the subjects' suicidal ideation. Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the transition experiences of the elderly from long-term care hospitals to their homes. Methods: The participants were eight elderly medicaid beneficiaries, who had been the subjects from the community care project in Korea. The data were collected with one-on-one interviews from April to November in 2020, and analyzed by phenomenological steps. However, it is suggested that active communication between hospitals and community care institutions, and improvement of home environment to live in the community before discharge should be required. And system revision is needed to adjust activity in their home and support health problems of the elderly in the early stage of discharge. This study is designed to identify the changes of the elderly's residential environment and life satisfaction in rural area during the past 20 years. Data from the survey of Ministry of Health and Welfare conducted in 1994, 1998, 2004, 2008, and 2014 were used for the analysis. The subjects of the study included a sample of 11,019 respondents who represent aged 65 and older in Korea rural area. The result of analysis indicated that; First, the average age of the rural elderly continuously increased and the rural elderly that hope to live with their grown-up children gradually declined. It means that the social responsibility of supporting the elderly is steadily expanding. Second, the ratio of rural elderly living with their children is decreased from 43% in 1994 to 11% in 2014, whereas the single elderly household who are living alone or living with spouse increased. And more elderly live with married children in order to help their children rather than receiving help from them. Third, the frequency of intercourse with their children tended to decline gradually, in contrast with communication frequency with them mounted steadily during the past few decades. Finally, the factors influencing the life satisfaction of rural elderly was health status, economic level, child relationship with them, and residential environment.
Purpose: This study aims to explore the effect of physical, emotional and environmental status on safety consciousness of the elderly who live alone. Methods: A total of 228 participants were the elderly living alone aged 65 years and older. Three questionnaires were developed to measure safety consciousness, physical status, and environmental status by researchers. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to evaluate emotional status of the elderly. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Average scores of participants were $3.71{\pm}1.49$ (range 0~6) for physical status, $8.28{\pm}3.38$ (range 0~15) for environmental status, $7.21{\pm}3.40$ (range 0~15) for GDS and $17.00{\pm}6.54$ (range 0~37) for safety consciousness. Safety consciousness was significantly associated with education, marital status, drinking, and depression as emotional status. These variables explained 13.6% of the variance in safety consciousness. Conclusion: The levels of safety consciousness among the elderly living alone were low. Education, marital status, drinking, and depression were the factors affecting safety consciousness. Risk assessment and management of these factors are needed to increase safety consciousness of the elderly.
The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of the social intervention for severely isolated older adults who live alone and are in serious isolation as if they were 'hidden'. Through qualitative descriptive methods, it intends to describe how social workers in the "Making Friends of Older Adults who Live Alone" project have perceived older adults living alone in serious isolated situation, whether there have been changes in the perception of the elderly according to the progress of the project, and what kinds of experiences these social workers have had while providing case management to older adults. In-depth interviews with 40 social workers, case management records of 70 senior citizens, and research journals were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis methods. The results of data analysis were presented in two categories and four subcategories each. Based on the research findings, four kinds of implications were suggested.
The aim of this study was to examine the spouse effects on depressive symptom and suicidal thinking among the elderly aged 65 and over in Korea. The subjects selected from the database of the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV) conducted by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2007 to 2009. The elderly living alone experienced depressive symptom as 2.0 times(OR=2.004, 95% CI=1.433, 2.803) as, and suicidal thinking as 1.6 times(OR=1.567, 95% CI=1.111, 2.211) as the elderly couples did, adjusting for socio-economic factor, health status factors, and health behaviors factors. As for the male subgroup, the elderly living alone experienced depressive symptom as 4.0 times(OR=3.997, 95% CI=2.066, 7.732) as, and suicidal thinking as 3.2 times(OR=3.181, 95% CI=1.535, 6.592) as the elderly couples did. On the other hands, there was no significant difference in depressive symptoms and suicidal thinking between the female elderly living alone and couples. The object of this study is to investigate the satisfaction level of group homes for the elderly living alone in rural areas. Sixty-four elderly people, living alone, were selected from ten regions operated by the Gimje city council in Jeonlabuk-do, and then a survey was conducted during January 17 to 26 in 2011. The results of the investigation are as follows: first, roughly 90.6 percent of the participants responded that they were satisfied with cohabitation. Second, average point of satisfaction was going to bed together, which is 4.39, also each unit in all the ten regions was recorded above 4.00. Third, the satisfaction of eating together averaged highly at 4.37. Fourth, 95 percent of them were satisfied with the conditions of the residential space. Fifth, the satisfaction with the amenities, such as electricity, phone, heating and sanitation, averaged 96.9 and 98.4 percent each, which was rated highest. Through analytical research, elderly people who live in 'group homes' are satisfied with their lives. It is thought that this 'group home' can play the role of an alternative family better than existing 'senior citizen centers' and 'welfare centers for the elderly'. The study means that 'group homes' in rural areas could be established successfully.
