First, the elderly mostly gathered in Tapgol Park and Jongmyo Park which were accessible to subways and close to amenities and traditional markets. The elders usually gathered around buffer zones or green spaces set up to protect cultural heritages. Second, many elderly users were observed in Osolgil Silver Park and Sinteuri Park which were renovated with senior-friendly concept. These parks were recognized as places that the elderly people could visit without minding users of other generations because the elderly users were ensured by words such as 'seniors only' or 'senior-friendly'. • In 2000, the number of people aged 65 and over increased to 3.37 million, accounting for 7.1% of the total population of South Korea. The elderly population will increase up to 19.3% in 2030. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) seems to increase with age. More than 50-60% of old people complain of SDB-related signs and symptoms including awakening headache, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, memory loss, personality changes, and depression. The influence of a mild degree of SDB upon the elderly is unclear, but moderate to severe SDB is well known to be associated with many diseases including hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia, and sudden death. Therefore, physicians should pay attention to elderly patients who complain of SDB related symptoms and signs that may not be normal signs of aging. Physicians need to become more sensitive to treat SDB in the elderly.

  • This study conducts empirical research on gender differentials of economic resources in old age. The economic resources are assessed by the presence of independent income source and the amount of total income. The study, based on nation-wide survey of the elderly, examines the effects of individual level variables and household level ones. Also, it compares such effects between male and female elderly. The analysis shows that several variables have gender specific effects. Among them, particularly interesting and important are marital status and coresidence with children. The positive effect of having spouse is greater among female elderly than among male elderly. Also, while coresidence with children among male elderly has insignificant or slightly positive relation to their own economic resources, it has a negative relation among female elderly. These results indicate that female elderly are dependent on their husbands and children. The study suggests that future research on the elderly incorporate gender differentials into models attempting to capture diversity within the elderly population.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of elderly education in the age of science and technology. The research contents to achieve the research purpose are, first, to examine the current status of elderly education, and second, to suggest the direction of elderly education in the age of science and technology. Due to the current status of education for the elderly, education for the elderly continues to change and develop, and various programs and activities are provided to help the elderly enjoy a richer retirement life. According to the survey report on the elderly, 11.9% of all elderly people participate in learning activities. Senior welfare centers accounted for the largest number of institutions conducting learning activities for elderly education learning activities participants at 35.5%. First, in the direction of elderly education in the age of science and technology, education on the use of digital technology and information is necessary in the composition of elderly education contents. Second, in the case of elderly education methods, customized elderly education methods are needed. Third, in the case of operating elderly education institutions, specialized education centers for elderly education must be further strengthened and supported. The international community is already forming a consensus that the establishment of new social systems and financial investment due to the increase in the elderly population should be considered a new growth engine rather than a social crisis. Although there is a burden on the social security sector due to the increase in the elderly population, there is a shift in the direction of recognizing the potential capabilities and experiences of the elderly and returning them to social resources. Elderly education in the age of science and technology needs to change to a direction that can build a healthy and progressive society in the future.

Results: The factors affecting the depression were education level, household income, Perceived health status, smoking, drinking, physical activity, body mass index and employment status. It was found that the unemployed persons were 1.68 times more likely to be depressed than those who remain employed. • This study empirically analyzes the policy demand for population inflow in Hongcheon-gun, a region that has experienced population decline over the past decade. The results of this study based on the multinominal logit model provide the policy implications as follows. First, due to the differing factors influencing the demand for population inflow policies among the young and the elderly, local governments should clearly define the policy targets for population inflow. Second, in the context of policy demand for population inflow through corporate attraction, we identify statistically significant and positive effects of the length of residence for both young and old people, and the level of formal education for the elderly. These results emphasize the importance of formulating population inflow policies distinctively targeted for the young and the elderly generations, respectively, thereby increasing population inflow in the population reduction area.
