  • In this paper distribution of welding residual stress on the double fillet welded joint which exits and not exits root gap, i.e. full penetration and partial penetration is investigated by two dimensional cunduct and thermal elasto-plastic analysis. And stress distribution on notch-tip of the structure where welding residual stress regarded as initial stress and then external load is added is also investigated.

  • Zinc coated steel sheets have been widely used in automotive industry. High power laser welding has been used as an excellent welding means for thin sheets. The welding residual stress, which was brought in laser welding, causes making weak the mechanical strength. The purpose of this study is to get the residual stress distribution in various laser welding condition by FEM and verify the results by X-Ray diffraction. Welding residual stresses have been calculated by thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. Form the results, it can be known that the laser welding condition affects to distribution of the residual stress.

  • A two dimensional thermo elasto-plastic finite clement stress analysis was performed to study stress distributions in functionally gradient material. The upper $ZrO_2$ surface is heated at 1200K until a steady state is established and cooled at 300K. The influences on the thermal stress distributions due to the difference of compositional gradient exponent p were investigated. In this study, we obtained the thermal stresses are low for p=1.

  • The failure of a thin-walled tube was studied in this paper based on three failure models. Both proportional and non-proportional loading paths were applied. Proportional loading consisted of combined tension-torsion. Cyclic non-proportional loading was also applied. It was a circular out-of-phase axial-shear stress loading path. The third loading path was a combination of a constant internal pressure and a bending moment. The failure models under study were equivalent plastic strain, modified Mohr-Coulomb (Bai-Wierzbicki) and Tearing parameter models. The elasto-plastic analysis was conducted using J2 criterion and nonlinear kinematic hardening. The return mapping algorithm was employed to numerically solve the plastic flow relations. The effects of the hydrostatic stress on the plastic flow and the stress triaxiality parameter on the failure were discussed. Each failure model under study was utilized to predict failure. The failure loads obtained from each model were compared with each other. The equivalent plastic strain model was independent from the stress triaxiality parameter, and it predicted the highest failure load in the bending problem. The modified Mohr-Coulomb failure model predicted the lowest failure load for the range of the stress triaxiality parameter and Lode's angle.

  • The ratcheting and strain cyclic behaviour of joined conical-cylindrical shells under uniaxial strain controlled, uniaxial and multiaxial stress controlled cyclic loading are investigated in the paper. The elasto-plastic deformation of the structure is simulated using Chaboche non-linear kinematic hardening model in finite element package ANSYS 13.0. The stress-strain response near the joint of conical and cylindrical shell portions is discussed in detail. The effects of strain amplitude, mean stress, stress amplitude and temperature on ratcheting are investigated. Under strain symmetric cycling, the stress amplitude increases with the increase in imposed strain amplitude. Under imposed uniaxial/multiaxial stress cycling, ratcheting strain increases with the increasing mean/amplitude values of stress and temperature. The abrupt change in geometry at the joint results in local plastic deformation inducing large strain variations in the vicinity of the joint. The forcing frequency corresponding to peak axial ratcheting strain amplitude is significantly smaller than the frequency of first linear elastic axial vibration mode. The strains predicted from quasi static analysis are significantly smaller as compared to the peak strains from dynamic analysis.

  • The buckling capacity of a radially retractable hybrid grid shell in the closed position was investigated in this paper. The geometrically non-linear elastic buckling and elasto-plastic buckling analyses of the hybrid structure were carried out. A parametric study was done to investigate the effects rise-to-span ratio, beam section, area and pre-stress of cables, on the failure load. Also, the influence of the shape and scale of imperfections on the elasto-plastic buckling loads was discussed. The results show that the critical buckling load is reduced by taking account of material non-linearity. Furthermore, increasing the rise-to-span ratio or the cross-section area of steel beams notably improves the stability of the structure. However, the cross section area and pre-stress of cables pose negligible effect on the structural stability. It can also be found that the hybrid structure is highly sensitive to geometric imperfection which will considerably reduce the failure load. The proper shape and scale of the imperfection are also important.

  • Based on observation emerged from the undrained tests and the anisotropic consolidation tests, an incremental stress-strain theory for rockfill is proposed in a manner similar to that developed ky Cambridge Group for normally consolidated soils; the volumetric strain due to stress increment is the same as the increment due to an undrained component followed by an increment along the constant stress ratio path. The strains in drained tests are predicted from those in the undrained tests and in the anisotropic consolidation tests. An expression for the undrained stress path is derived based on the bilinear relationship between the pore pressure developed and the stress ratio observed during untrained tests. Good agreement is found between the calculated and measured strains. This trend in behaviour would be helpful in establishing a stress.strain model for rockfill using the elasto-plastic behaviour with the concept of plastic potentials and flow rules.

  • This Finite Element Program(TAFEM) has been developed to be able to carry out the structural analsis of tunnel section and simulate the surrounding ground behaviour due to New Austrian Tunnelling Method, of which main support is the surrounding ground, itself. The Elasto-plastic theory has been applied. The used finite elements are 8-noded isoparametric element(rock & shotcrete), 2 or 3-noded rod element(rock bolt) and infinite boundary element. The load incremental method and tangential stiffness method has been used. Associated flow rule was applied to plastic flow and yield criteria inclued not only Mohr-Coulomb but also Drucker-Prager. In this paper, Drucker-Prager yield criterion has been used. The relationship between plastic strain and stress is based on the incremental strain concept and stress-strain equation on the basis of the stress path of each gauss point has been adopted. It may be rational that rock is considered to be no-tension material, so that no-tension analysis has been adopted in accordance with the brittle fracture constitutive equation.

  • The Strain rate effect in electro-magnetic forming, which is one of the high velocity forming methods, is studied by the finite element method in this paper. The forming process is simplified by neglecting the coupling between magnetic field and work-piece deformation, and the impulsive magnetic pressure is regarded as inner pressure load. A rate-dependent elasto-plastic material model, of which tangential modulus depends of effective strain rate, is proposed. The model is shown to well describe the transient increase of yield stresses, the decreases of the final displacement and yield stress, the decrease of the difference in the distribution of deformation along the axial direction, and the change of deformation mechanism due to strain rate effect. As a result, displacement, final deformed shape, radial velocity, deformation energy, and the changes of effective stress, effective strain and effective strain rate through plastic working are given. Based on the results, the effectiveness of this model and the strain rate effect of the deformation process of the work-piece are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of residual stress at the weldment of pressure vessel by local Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT). In order to do it, residual stress were measured before and after local PWHT by XRD on the test piece first. And then, the results of finite element(FE) analysis based on thermal-elasto-plastic-creep theories were verified by comparing with the measured results.
