A beam on elasto-plastic foundation modeling of soldier pile and woodlagging tieback walls or anchored walls was developed and tested. An instrumented full scale tieback wall in sand was constructed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Bite located on Texas A&M University. The experimental earth pressure deflection relationship (p-y curves) was developed from the measurements. The construction sequence was simulated in the proposed method. The conceptual methodology of an anchored wall design was introduced by using the proposed method. The proposed method was evaluated with the measurements of case histories in sand and clay. A parametric research was performed to study the most influencing factors for the proposed method. It is concluded that the proposed method represents a significant improvement on the prediction of bending moments and deflections of the properly designed walls.
The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.
Behavior of soil is usually described with continuum type of failure models such as Mohr-Coulomb or Drucker-Prager model. The main advantage of these models is in a relatively simple and efficient way of predicting the main tendencies and overall behavior of soil in failure analysis of interest for engineering practice. However, the main shortcoming of these models is that they are not able to capture post-peak behavior of soil nor the corresponding failure modes under extreme loading. In this paper we will significantly improve on this state-of-the-art. In particular, we propose the use of a discrete beam lattice model to provide a sharp prediction of inelastic response and failure mechanisms in coupled soil-foundation systems. In the discrete beam lattice model used in this paper, soil is meshed with one-dimensional Timoshenko beam finite elements with embedded strong discontinuities in axial and transverse direction capable of representing crack propagation in mode I and mode II. Mode I relates to crack opening, and mode II relates to crack sliding. To take into account material heterogeneities, we determine fracture limits for each Timoshenko beam with Gaussian random distribution. We compare the results obtained using the discrete beam lattice model against those obtained using the modified three-surface elasto-plastic cap model.
In this paper, a mechanism of the soil structure reinforced by geosynthetics is discussed. The reinforcing mechanism is interpreted an effect arising from the reinforcement works so as to prevent the dilative deformation (negative dilatancy) of soil under shearing. A full-scale in-situ model test was carried out in Kanazawa of Japan(1994) and in the laboratory test the strength and the characteristics of deformation conducting a constant volume shear test are examined. The parameters needed in the FEM are also applied by using the experimental data. The elasto-plastic finite element simulation is carried out, and the results are quantitatively compared with that of experiment. As a results, it is known that the theoretical predictions could be explained effectively the experimental results which are obtained by a full-scale in-situ model test.

In this paper, comparison of the observed and the predicted ground deformations due to the construction of road embankment with peck drain near the construction site was made. Measurement of the ground deformation at the gasoline stand due to the construction of road embankment was made and it was compared with the predicted deformation results of Finite Element Method analysis made with Elasto-plastic and Elastic visco-plastic models. A well agreement was obtained between the measured and predicted ground deformations.

A finite element model for the non-linear dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) containment shell of a nuclear power plant subjected to extreme loads such as impact and earthquake is presented in this work. The impact is modeled by using an uncoupled approach in which a load function is applied at the impact zone. The earthquake load is modeled by prescribing ground accelerations at the base of the structure. The nuclear containment is discretized spatially by using 20-node brick finite elements. The concrete in compression is modeled by using a modified $Dr{\ddot{u}}cker$-Prager elasto-plastic constitutive law where strain rate effects are considered. Cracking of concrete is modeled by using a smeared cracking approach where the tension-stiffening effect is included via a strain-softening rule. A model based on fracture mechanics, using the concept of constant fracture energy release, is used to relate the strain softening effect to the element size in order to guaranty mesh independency in the numerical prediction. The reinforcing bars are represented by incorporated membrane elements with a von Mises elasto-plastic law. Two benchmarks are used to verify the numerical implementation of the present model. Results are presented graphically in terms of displacement histories and cracking patterns. Finally, the influence of the shear transfer model used for cracked concrete as well as the effect due to a base slab incorporation in the numerical modeling are analyzed.

The objective of present paper is to investigate elasto-plastic behaviour and estimate the resistance capacity of a beam-shear wall structural system against earthquake ground accleration exciations. Pushover analysis is adopted to estimate inttiate and post stiffnesses and yielding point for inelastic response analysis in LPM (Lumped Parameter Mass) model, and modified Clough model is used as the hysteresis rule of each story. Three earthquake waves are used in the analysis but their peak ground accelerations are changed to be 0.12g, 0.24g. It is assumed that the earthquakes act in the longigtudianl direction of a 25 Story apartment building which consists of two some unit plan. The distribution of story ratio and ductility ratio are estimated and discussed within Korean, Japanese code and UBC.
This paper concerns the development and implementation of an orthotropic, stress resultant elasto-plastic finite element model for the collapse load analysis of reinforced concrete plates. The model implements yield line plasticity theory for reinforced concrete. The behaviour of the yield functions are studied, and modifications introduced to ensure a robust finite element model of cases involving bending and twisting stress resultants ($M_x$, $M_y$, $M_{xy}$). Onset of plasticity is always governed by the general yield-line-model (YLM), but in some cases a switch to the stress resultant form of the von Mises function is used to ensure the proper evolution of plastic strains. Case studies are presented, involving isotropic and orthotropic plates, to assess the behaviour of the yield line approach. The YLM function is shown to perform extremely well, in predicting both the collapse loads and failure mechanisms.

The objective of this research was to develop a VEPCD (ViscoElastoPlastic Continuum Damage) Model which is used to predict the behavior of asphalt concrete under various loading and temperature conditions. This paper presents the VEPCD model formulated in a tension mode and its validation using four hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures: dense-graded HMA, SBS, CR-TB, and Terpolymer. Modelling approaches consist of two components: the ViscoElastic Continuum Damage (VECD) mechanics and the ViscoPlastic (VP) theory. The VECD model was to describe the time-dependent behavior of HMA with growing damage. The irrecoverable (whether time-dependent or independent) strain has been described by the VP model. Based on the strain decomposition principle, these two models are integrated to form the VEPCD model. For validating the VEPCD model, two types of laboratory tests were performed: 1) a constant crosshead strain rate tension test, 2) a fatigue test with randomly selected load levels and frequencies.

In this paper, a nonlinear finite element analysis program NUCAS, which has been developed for assessment of ultimate pressure capacity and failure mode for nuclear containment building is described. Degenerated shell element with assumed strain method and low-order solid element with enhanced assumed strain method is adapted to microscopic material and elasto-plastic material model, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.
