  • Steel-concrete composite columns are popular for superstructures of bridges, and the outside steel attached to the shaft increases the shaft resistance due to confining concrete. In this study, lateral resistance of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts was evaluated quantitatively based on numerical analysis when steel casings are used as structural elements like composite columns. Ultimate lateral resistance of composite drilled shafts with various diameters was numerically calculated through 3D finite element analysis. For that, elasto-plastic model with perfectly plasticity is involved to capture the ultimate load. A commercial FEM program, MIDAS-GTS, is used in this study. Real field conditions of the West Coast, Korea were considered to set up the ground conditions and pile lengths required for this parametric studies. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions are evaluated for better understanding the mechanisms of the composite shaft behavior.

  • In case of aircraft impact on nuclear containment structures, the initial kinetic energy of the aircraft is transferred and absorbed by the outer containment, may causing either complete or partial failure of containment structure. In the present study safety analysis of BWR Mark III type containment has been performed. The total height of containment is 67 m. It has a circular wall with monolithic dome of 21m diameter. Crash analysis has been performed for fighter jet Phantom F4. A normal hit at the crown of containment dome has been considered. Numerical simulations have been carried out using finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Concrete Damage Plasticity model have been incorporated to simulate the behaviour of concrete at high strain rate, while Johnson-Cook elasto-visco model of ductile metals have been used for steel reinforcement. Maximum deformation in the containment building has reported as 33.35 mm against crash of Phantom F4. Deformations in concrete and reinforcements have been localised to the impact region. Moreover, no significant global damage has been observed in structure. It may be concluded from the present study that at higher velocity of aircraft perforation of the structure may happen.

  • In this paper, a meshfree-enriched finite element method (ME-FEM) is introduced for the large deformation analysis of nonlinear path-dependent problems involving contact. In linear ME-FEM, the element formulation is established by introducing a meshfree convex approximation into the linear triangular element in 2D and linear tetrahedron element in 3D along with an enriched meshfree node. In nonlinear formulation, the area-weighted smoothing scheme for deformation gradient is then developed in conjunction with the meshfree-enriched element interpolation functions to yield a discrete divergence-free property at the integration points, which is essential to enhance the stress calculation in the stage of plastic deformation. A modified variational formulation using the smoothed deformation gradient is developed for path-dependent material analysis. In the industrial metal forming problems, the mortar contact algorithm is implemented in the explicit formulation. Since the meshfree-enriched element shape functions are constructed using the meshfree convex approximation, they pose the desired Kronecker-delta property at the element edge thus requires no special treatments in the enforcement of essential boundary condition as well as the contact conditions. As a result, this approach can be easily incorporated into a conventional displacement-based finite element code. Two elasto-plastic problems are studied and the numerical results indicated that ME-FEM is capable of delivering a volumetric locking-free and pressure oscillation-free solutions for the large deformation problems in metal forming analysis.

  • This paper examines the blood chamber of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) under static loading conditions and standard operating temperatures. The LVAD's walls are made of a temperature-sensitive polymer (ChronoFlex C 55D) and are covered with a titanium nitride (TiN) nano-coating (deposited by laser ablation) to improve their haemocompatibility. A loss of cohesion may be observed near the coating-substrate boundary. Therefore, a micro-scale stress-strain analysis of the multilayered blood chamber was conducted with FE (finite element) code. The multi-scale model included a macro-model of the LVAD's blood chamber and a micro-model of the TiN coating. The theories of non-linear elasticity and elasto-plasticity were applied. The formulated problems were solved with a finite element method. The micro-scale problem was solved for a representative volume element (RVE). This micro-model accounted for the residual stress, a material model of the TiN coating, the stress results under loading pressures, the thickness of the TiN coating and the wave parameters of the TiN surface. The numerical results (displacements and strains) were experimentally validated using digital image correlation (DIC) during static blood pressure deformations. The maximum strain and stress were determined at static pressure steps in a macro-scale FE simulation. The strain and stress were also computed at the same loading conditions in a micro-scale FE simulation.

  • This study deals with residual stress prediction and hardness evaluation within cross ball grooved inner race fabricated by cold upsetting process consisted of upsetting and ejection steps. A raw workpiece material of AISI 5120H (SCr420H) is first spheroidized and annealed, then phosphophyllite coated to form solid lubricant layer on its outer surface. To investigate influences of the heat treatment, uni-axial compression tests and Vickers micro-hardness measurements are conducted. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic FE simulations on the upsetting step and the ejection one are performed to visualize the residual stress and the ductile (plastic deformation) damage. External feature of the fabricated inner race is fully captured by using an optical 3D scanner, and the micro-hardness is measured on internal cross-sections. Consequently, the dimensional compatibility between the simulated inner race and the fabricated one is ensured with a difference of under 0.243mm that satisfied permissible error range of ±0.50mm on the grooved surface, and the predicted residual stress is verified to have similar distribution tendency with the measured Vickers micro-hardness.

  • The standard consolidation tests using the incremental loading technique test (IL) were performed on remolded normal consolidation and undisturbed clay samples to find out the effects of plastic index and loading period on consolidation in this study. The remolded samples used were prepared by mixing Gunsan-Samangum clay with bentonite so that they may have plasticity indexes of 15, 30, 45, and 60%, respectively. The undisturbed clay samples were collected from Inchon, Kwangyang, and Uoolsan. The samples were tested at the condition of 4 different loading periods (1, 2, 4, and 8 days). Settlement, coefficient of consolidation, compression index, secondary compression index, and pore water pressure characteristics were investigated from the plastic index and loading period aspects, and the compression index, coefficient of consolidation, and secondary compression index were formulated in terms of the plastic index and loading. To verify the applicability of proposed equations, the settlements obtained from Terzaghi's theory, modified Cam-Clay model (elasto-plastic model), and the Sekiguchi model (elasto-viscoplastic mode) were compared with the test results. The comparison indicates that the Sekiguchi model incorporating the secondary consolidation characteristic well predicts the results.

  • For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.

  • The objective of this study is to perform finite element analyses(FEA) using the anisotropic hardening constitutive model on the basis of the total stress concept. An anisotropic hardening model was then developed to solve the problem and its mathematical formulations and experimental verifications were also described. In a companion paper, the constitutive equation will be formulated for accurate and efficient solutions of FEA, and coded into a nonlinear analysis program, and finally a field problem will be analyzed. The proposed model includes the failure criterion of a von Mises type and the anisotropic hardening rule based on the generalized isotropic hardening description, which can model the nonlinearity and the anisotropy of the stress-strain relationship. As a result this study could verty the experimental results for UU triaxial tests, CU triaxial tests for overconsolidated samples, and anisotropic loading tests with the rotation of principal stress axes for $K_0$consolidated samples.
