The stabilized Michelson interferometer was developed in order to measure micro dynamic displacement at the surface of solids due to elastic wave propagation. The stabilizer was designed to compensate light path disturbances using a reference mirror driven by piezoelectric actuator. Using stabilizer, the effect of external vibration was reduced and the quadrature condition was satisifed. As the results, the output of photodetector had maximum sensitivity and linearity. The minimum detectable displacement was 0.3nm at the band width of 10 MHz. The epicentral displacements due to the glass capillary breaks and the steel ball drop impact were measured using the developed interferometer and the results were compared with the calculated one.

In this study, core technologies of a traction system on a mountain tram operating on the track of mountain road full of sharp curves and steep gradients were developed. In domestic mountain resort areas, sometimes the transportation service is not provided in winter because of ice and heavy snow on roads, so a mountain railway service independent of the climate and geographic conditions is needed. A traction system was designed taking into account of the power of a traction motor to climb the gradient of 120 ‰, which is common in domestic mountainous areas. and power transmission system was designed to consider the installation space for the traction system. In addition, a reduction gear and a propeller shaft were developed. An elastic pinion was developed and applied to the rack & pinion bogie system for steep gradient so that noise and vibration generated by contact between the steel gears could be reduced. Impact comparison tests showed that the vibration level of the elastic pinion is one-third lower than that of previous steel pinion. Independent rotating wheels and axles were developed for the bogie system to operate on the sharp curve of a 10 meter radius. In addition, the band braking system was developed to enhance the braking force during running on the steep gradient. A test for the braking force showed it exerts the required braking force. The performance of the developed core components were verified by the tests and finally they were applied to the bogie system running on the track of steep gradient and sharp curve.
Spectral analysis of transient elastic waves were carried out in order to identify the propagation modes in glass and unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates. Pencil leads were broken on the surface of plates to generate elastic waves, and two broad band transducers of 6.35 mm in diameter and 10 MHz center frequency were placed at the linear location from the source. The frequency spectra of detected signals showed that the wave propagation in the plates obeyed the Lamb wave dispersion relation. The transient signals were the fast propagating modes around maximum group velocity of the lowest and first order symmetric $modes(S_{0} and S_{1}),$ and first order antisymmetric $mode(A_{1})$. The transient signals were not severely distorted due to relatively small dispersion of those modes around the maximum group velocity. The fastest propagating mode in the plates was shown to be $S_{0}$ mode less the than cut-off frequency of $A_{1}$ mode.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to further the empirical evidence regarding exercise as an effective alternative to surgery for treating patients with low to moderate hallux valgus. Method: A total of 20 students with low to moderate hallux valgus participated in this study for six weeks. Participants were selected according to foot-print. All participants exercised using a combination of Elastic-band and Short Foot Exercises twice a week for thirty minutes each time. Measurements were taken at week 0 and week 6 for plantar foot pressure, toe angle and balance. The data was processed using a paird t-test. Results: There were significant differences in pretest and posttest measurements for balance. However there were no significants differences in plantar foot pressure and toe angle. Conclusion: Although our study did not support the effect of exercises on plantar foot pressure and toe angle, we did show evidence that exercise was effective for balance. In order to increase the effectiveness of this exercise program, patients need to be more aware of the footwear they use in their daily lives so as to contribute to the contribute to the overall effectiveness of treating low to moderate hallux valgus and offer an alternative to surgery.
This study investigates preferred bicycle wear designs that can satisfy active senior consumers. A survey was conducted on 50-60's women who periodically rode bicycles. The results indicated a preference for slim designs and red colors. Jacket designs preferences were for a tight fit for size tolerance, stand collar style, and elastic band details for cuff styles. Pants design preferences were for a whole band waist belt type with a tight fit style such as leggings in pants silhouette, zipper details on the side line and ankle length. They also preferred styles with pads attached to underpants in the pad style and the part of the back waist in the pocket position. The survey showed four kinds of jacket design drawings on an ordinal scale rating. Results indicated a preference for set-in variation jackets with the red and gray color combination. Finally, we demonstrated bicycle wear design suggestions. The jacket applied different armhole line colors connected to the sleeve to make the waist slimmer; in addition, stretchable material helped improve armpit part functionality.

In the present, the formation of shear band under a simple shear deformation is investigated using a rate-independent elastic-plastic constitutive relations. Moreover, the strain gradient terms are incorporated to obtain a non-local plastic constitutive relation, which in turn represented using combined two-back stress hardening model. Then, the continuum damage model is also included to the proposed model. The post-localization behavior are studied by introducing a small imperfection in a work piece. The strain gradient affects the shear localization significantly such that the intensity of shear band decreases as the strain gradient coefficient increases when the J2 flow theory is employed.
The paper studies the dispersion of the axisymmetric longitudinal wave propagating in the "hollow cylinder + surrounding medium" system with inhomogeneous initial stresses caused by the uniformly distributed radial compressional forces acting at infinity. Up to now in the world literature, there exist only a few investigations related to the wave dispersion in a hollow cylinder with inhomogeneous initial stresses. Therefore, this paper is one of the first attempts in this field in the sense of the development of investigations for the case where the cylinder is surrounded with an infinite medium. The three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves is used for describing the considered wave propagation problem and, for a solution to the corresponding mathematical problem, the discrete-analytical solution method is developed and employed. The corresponding dispersion equation is obtained and this equation is solved numerically and, as a result of this solution, the dispersion curves are constructed for the first and second modes. By analyzing these curves, the character of the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses on the dispersion curves is established. In particular, it is established that as a result of the inhomogeneity of the initial stresses both new dispersion curves and the "band gap" for the wave frequencies can appear.
The studies on the non-destructive testing methods of the composite materials are very important for improving their reliability and safety. AE(Acoustic Emission) can evaluate the defects by detecting the emitting strain energy when elastic waves are generated by the generation and growth of a crack, plastic deformation, fiber breakage, matrix cleavage or delamination. In this paper, the AE signals of the filament wound composite cylinder and sandwich cylinder during the pressure test were measured and analyzed. The signal characteristics of PVDF sensors were measured, and an AE signal analyzer which had the band-pass filter and L-C resonance filter were designed and fabricated. Also, the crack detection capability of the fabricated AE signal analyzer wes evaluated during the pressure tests of the filament wound composite cylinder and the sandwich cylinder.

Poor speech intelligibility in an air traffic control room is frequently a result of many, quite different causes and occasionally leads to complaints of the controller personnel. The paper describes a sequence of successful tasks performed in a local control room. The initial measurements included an investigation of the background noise (caused by fans, air condition, computer and radar equipment) and performance checks of the electronic audio and communication equipment with respect to the audio transmission behavior. The spectral composition of the noise as well as the characteristics of the audio communication path between the controllers and the pilots(which showed a loss of spectral information in the audio band due to built-in notch filters for the suppression of control tones) required adaptations of the amplitude behavior of the amplifiers through user adjustable tone controls. The radar console fans, which contributed significantly to the overall noise floor of the room, underwent a substantial reconstruction by replacing the tight mounting with an elastic double suspension, reducing the noise level by 50%. Finally, a possible source of untimely fatigue of the controllers during their working hours has been found in strong spectral components of the noise above the audio band, radiated by numerous video monitors in the control through vibrating components excited by the line frequency of the video signal.

Background: With the increasing elderly population, the need for gait analysis of these elderly individuals is also increasing. Most devices are costly and not portable; however, smartphones using built-in sensors capable of measuring motion and are easily available. Objectives: To examine the reliability and validity of knee joint angles of the elderly using smartphone measurements during walking. Design: Quasi-experimental research. Methods: Sixteen elderly people, aged 65+ and living in Daejeon and Chungbuk, South Korea, participated in the study. Electrogoniometers and smartphones were attached to the thigh and the side and front of the shank of each subject, respectively, using double-sided tape, an arm band, and an elastic band. Each subject completed two sets of at least seven gait cycles (14 steps). Results: Both the smartphones and electrogoniometers exhibited high agreement in terms of their primary and secondary measurements (ICC>.75). The agreement between the smartphones and electrogoniometers was also high in terms of both the primary and secondary measurements (ICC<.60). Conclusion: These results indicate that smartphones can be costly equipment cannot, even though they cannot completely replace existing clinical-grade devices. Their utility is emphasized herein for measuring knee joint angles of the elderly during walking.
