The elastic waves in a plate are dispersive waves due to the characteristics of Lamb waves. However, S0 symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region below the first cut-off frequency. The wave Propagation velocities vary with the direction in anisotropic plates such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Plates. The wave vector direction and energy flow vector direction are same in isotropic plates. However, the wave vector direction same as the phase velocity direction is not in accordance with the energy flow direction same as the group velocity direction in anisotropic plates. In this study. the dispersion curves or the phase velocity from anti-symmetric and symmetric Lamb wave dispersion equation are calculated for unidirectional laminated composite plate. Slowness surface is sketched using phase velocity under the first cut-off frequency. The direction and magnitude of group velocity are corrected with this slowness surface. The measured group velocities are in good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction zone which is called the cusp region.
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the ductility and strength factors that are key components of the response modification factor for special steel moment-resistant frames. The ductility factors for special steel moment-resistant frames were calculated by multiplying the ductility factor for SDOF systems and the MDOF modification factors. Ductility factors were computed for elastic and perfectly plastic SDOF systems undergoing different levels of inelastic deformation and periods when subjected to a large number of recorded earthquake ground motions. Based on the results of the regression analysis, simplified expressions were proposed to compute the ductility factors. Based on previous studies, the MDOF modification factors were also proposed to account for the MDOF systems. Strength factors for special steel moment resisting frames were estimated from the results of the nonlinear static analysis. A total of 36 sample steel frames were designed to investigate the ductility and strength factors considering design parameters such as number of stories (4, 8, and 16 stories), seismic zone factors (Z = 0.075, 0.2, and 0.4), framing system (Perimeter Frames, PF and Distributed Frames, DF), and failure mechanism (Strong-Column Weak Beam, SCWB, and Weak-Column Strong-Beam, WCSB). The effects of these design parameters on the ductility and strength factors for special steel moment-resisting frames were investigated.
A series of model test as well as numerical analysis by FEM was performed to investigate lateral earth pressure acting on a buried pipe in soft ground undergoing horizontal soil movement. A model test apparatus was manufactured so as to simulate horizontal soil movement in model soft ground, in which a model rigid buried pipe was installed. The velocity of soil deformation could be controlled as wanted during testing. The model test was performed on buried pipes with various diameters and shapes to investigate major factors affected the lateral earth pressure. The result of model tests showed that the larger lateral earth pressure acted on the buried pipes under the faster velocity of soil movement. The result of numerical analysis, which was performed under immediate loading condition, showed a similar behavior with the result of model tests under 0.3mm/min to 1.0mm/min velocity of soil deformation. Most of model tests showed the soil deformation-lateral load behavior, in which the first yielding load developed at small soil deformation and elastic behavior was observed by the yielding load. Then, lateral load was kept constant by the second yielding load, in which plastic behavior was observed between the first yielding load and the second yielding one. Beyond the second yielding load, the compression behavior zone was observed. When the velocity was too fast, however, the lateral load was increased with soil deformation beyond the first yielding load without showing the second yielding load. The buried pipes with the larger diameter was subjected to the larger lateral load and the larger increasing rate of lateral load. At small soil deformation, the influence of diameter and shape of buried pipes on lateral load was small. However, when soil deformation was increased considerably, the influence became more and more.

This paper is to investigate the possibility of the elastic seismic design for highrise buildings through seismic performance evaluation for potential earthquakes that wind-designed highrise buildings located in strong wind zone and low seismicity can be experienced. Highrise steel diagrid frames which is the most loved structural system in recent years were wind-designed and the substantial system overstrength due to wind design procedure is verified, For the highrise steel diagrid frames, the response spectrum analysis and the seismic performance evaluation by various soil sites were conducted. It was showed that highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 under strong wind and low seismic zones such as Korea peninsula can resist elastically for the 500 year return period earthquake and have the possibility of seismic design for the 2400 year return period earthquake. In the member level, highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 all presented the immediate occupancy level regardless of soil sites for the 500 year return earthquake and excluding the $S_E$ soil site for the even 2400 year return period earthquake. In the system level, highrise steel diagrid frames with slenderness of greater than 5.2 showed the immediate occupancy level for $S_A$ and $S_B$ soil sites and the life safety for $S_C$ to $S_E$ soil site in the 500 year return period. The seismic performance level of highrise steel diagrid frames for the 2400 year return period earthquake displayed one step lower than the 500 year return period earthquake.
Korea is classified into low and moderate seismic zone from the view-point of seismic hazard level. Korean seismic provisions has been developed based on UBC and ATC 3-06. Thus, in calculation of design base shear according to Korean provisions response modification factor (R) is included in the formula of design base shear. The major role of this factor is to reduce the elastic design base shear whereby structures can behave in inelastic range during design level earthquake ground motions(mean return period of 475 yrs.). R factor is assigned according to material and structural systems. In this study, R factor for bearing wall system is considered. Most of the walls of apartment buildings in Korea resist gravity and seismic loads simultaneously so that this wall system can be classified into bearing wall system. Structural details of these walls are different from those used in Japan and U.S.. They are all rectangular in sectional shape rather than barbell in shape, and also have special lateral reinforcement details at the boundaries of a wall. In Korean seismic design provisions(1988), two different values(3.0 and 3.5) of R factor are assigned to the bearing wall systems according to the wall details. However, in updated seismic provisions(2000), only one value is assigned to R factor(3.0) irrespective of wall details. In this study, the design base shear values in Korean seismic design provisions(1988, 2000), ATC 3-06, UBC are compared. Also experimental study was carried out to evaluate the seismic performance of structural walls. For this purpose, five test specimens were made which have special details used in apartment bearing wall systems in Korea. Based on the results of this study, response modification factor for bearing wall system is discussed.
The modeling of uplift pressure within dam, on the foundation on which it was constructed, and on the interface between the dam and foundation is a critical aspect in the analysis of concrete gravity dams, i.e. crack stability in concrete dam can correctly be predicted when uplift pressures are accurately modelled. Current models consider a uniform uplift distribution, but recent experimental results show that it varies along the crack faces and the procedures for modeling uplift pressures are well established for the traditional hand-calculation methods, but this is not the case for finite element (FE) analysis. In large structures, such as dams, because of smaller size of the fracture process zone with respect to the structure size, limited errors should occur under the assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). In this paper, the fracture behaviour of concrete gravity dams mainly subjected to uplift Pressure at the crack face was studied. Triangular type, trapezoidal type and parabolic type distribution of the uplift pressure including uniform type were considered in case of evaluating stress intensity factor by surface integral method. The effects of body forces, overtopping pressures are also considered and a parametric study of gravity dams under the assumption of LEFM is performed.
In highly stressed conditions, the excavation damage zone induced by stress redistribution and disturbance must be evaluated after tunnel excavation. Therefore, the investigation of stress-induced deformation and fracture in rock is indispensable. In this study, fracture and damage mechanisms of rock induced by the accumulation of microcracks were investigated by the moving point regression technique as well as acoustic emission measured during uniaxial compression tests. Especially, the modified procedures to determine damage thresholds more systematically were newly proposed, and successfully applied to rock. From experiments, crack initiation and track damage stress levels were estimated to be $33{\~}36\%$ and $84{\~}89\%$ of uniaxial compressive strength respectively, for both of Hwangdeung granite and Yeosan marble. However, the normalized crack closure stress level for Yeosan marble was much higher than for Hwangdeung granite. In addition, the largest proportion of total axial strain in Hwangdeung granite was attributable to elastic deformation and initial microcracking. However, the greatest part of axial deformation in Yeosan marble arose from initial crack closure and unstable cracking. Finally, it was seen that unstable cracking after the crack damage stress level played a key part in the lateral deformation in rocks under uniaxial compression.

The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section (length x width) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 [45/-45/0/90]3s, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a 30$\times$30, 50$\times$50, 70$\times$70, and 90mm$\times$90mm gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.

Even in moderate to low seismic regions like Korean peninsular where wind loading usually governs the structural design of a tall builidng, the probable structural impact of the 500-year design basis earthquake (DBE) or the 2400-year maximum credible earthquake (MCE) on the selected structural system should be considered at least in finalizing the design. In this study, seismic performance evaluation was conducted for concentrically braced steel highrise buildings that were only designed for wind by following the assumed domestic design practice. It was found that wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seimsic capacity due to the system overstrength resulting from the wind-serviceability criterion and the width-to-thickness ratio limits on steel members. The strength demand-to-strength capacity study based on the response spectrum analysis revealed that, due to the system overstrength factors mentioned above, wind-designed concentrically braced steel highrise buildings having a slenderness ratio of larger than six can withstand elastically even the maximum credible earthquake at the performance level of immediate occupancy.
The transition zone between an earthwork and a bridge effect to the vehicle's running stability because support stiffness of the roadbed is suddenly changed. The design criteria for the transition structure on ballast track were not particular in the past. However with the introduction of concrete track is introduced, it requires there is a higher performance level required because of maintenance and running stability. In this present paper, a transition structure reinforced with geosynthetics is suggested to improve the performance of existing bridge-earthwork transition structures. The suggested transition structure, in which there is reinforcing of the approach block using high-tension geosynthetics, has a structure similar to that of earth reinforced abutments. The utilized backfill materials are cement treated soil and gravel. These materials are used to reduce water intrusion into the approach block and to increase the recycling of surplus earth materials. An experiment was performed under the same conditions in order to allow a comparison of this new structure with the existing transition structure. Evaluation items are elastic displacement, cumulative settlement, and earth pressure. As for the results of the real-scale accelerated testing, the suggested transition structure has excellent performance for the reduction of earth pressure and settlement. Above all, it has high resistance the variation of the water content.
