Nondestructive test (NDT) provides much information on concrete without damage of structural functions. Of NDT methods, elastic wave propagation methods, such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and impact-echo (IE) method, have been successfully used to estimate the strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio of concrete as well as to detect the internal microstructural change and defects. In this study, the concretes with water-binder ratio ranging from 0.27 to 0.50 and fly ash content of 20% were made and then their longitudinal wave velocities were measured by UPV and IE method, respectively. Test results showed that the UPV is greater than the longitudinal wave velocity measured by the If method, i.e., rod-wave velocity obtained from the same concrete cylinder. It was found that the difference between the two types of velocities decreased with increasing the ages of concrete and strength level. Moreover, for the empirical formula, the dynamic Poisson's ratio, static and dynamic moduli of elasticity, and velocity-strength relationship were determined. It was observed that the Poisson's ratio and the modulus of elasticity determined by the dynamic method are greater than those determined by the static test. Consequently, for the more accurate estimation of concrete properties using the elastic wave velocities, the characteristics of these velocities should be understood.
Elastic behavior of the railway roadbed which supports the repeating dynamic loads of the train is mainly affected by the shear modulus of the upper roadbed. Therefore, shear wave velocity estimation of the uniformly compacted roadbed can be used to estimate the elastic behavior of the railway roadbed. The objective of this study is to suggest the relationship between the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) of the upper roadbed in order to estimate the shear wave velocity by using the dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT). To ensure the reliability of the relationship, the dynamic cone penetration test and the measurement of the shear wave velocity are conducted on the constructed upper roadbed. As a method for measurement of the shear wave velocity, cross hole is used and then the dynamic cone penetration test is performed at a center point between the source and the receiver of the cross hole. As a result of the correlation of the dynamic cone penetration index and the shear wave velocity at the same depths, the shear wave velocity is estimated as a form of involution of the dynamic cone penetration index with a determinant coefficient above 0.8. The result of this study can be used to estimate both the shear wave velocity and the strength of the railway roadbed using the dynamic cone penetrometer.
The relationship between the P wave velocity, static elastic modulus, and dynamic elastic modulus of different rock types was investigated to identify the distributive characteristics of the dynamic elastic modulus. Laboratory and in situ test results from 1,646 rock specimens, which are obtained for design and construction of structure, were analyzed, and grouped into three key rock types: gneiss, granite, and sandstone. These relationships were verified by comparing them with the results from previous studies. The gneiss samples exhibit a linear P wave velocity-static elastic modulus relationship, whereas the granite and sandstone samples exhibit exponential relationships. Their coefficient of determination ($R^2$) values are all in the 0.491-0.642 range, and are similar to those obtained in previous studies. The relationship between the static and dynamic elastic modulus exhibits a linear relationship for all rock types, yielding a coefficient of determination in the 0.543-0.676 range. The relationship between the P wave velocity and static elastic modulus follows an exponential regression for all rock types, with a high coefficient of determination that is in the 0.875-0.940 range.
To estimate the stability of a debris flow it is necessary to know the mass of surface soil, cohesion, slope, and friction angle. Given that the mass of surface soil is a function of soil thickness and mass density, it is important to obtain reliable estimates of soil thickness across a wide area. The objective of this paper is to estimate soil thickness using the elastic wave velocity with a new standard velocity. Tests are performed in debris-flow hazard areas, after which four profiles are selected to obtain the elastic wave velocity. Dynamic cone penetration tests are carried out to find the soil thickness at 18 points. The elastic wave velocity shows the area consists of 3~4 layers, and soil thicknesses are predicted by utilizing the new standard. The elastic wave velocity and dynamic cone penetration tests yield large differences in soil thickness. Therefore, this study shows that the new standard is useful not only in estimating soil thickness but also in improving the reliability of estimates of soil thickness.
Non-destructive exploration using elastic waves has been widely used to characterize rock mass properties. Wave propagation in jointed rock masses is significantly governed by the characteristics and orientation of discontinuities. The relationship between spatial heterogeneity (i.e., joint spacing) and wavelength for elastic waves propagating through jointed rock masses have been investigated previously. Discontinuous rock masses can be considered as an equivalent continuum material when the wavelength of the propagating elastic wave exceeds the spatial heterogeneity. However, it is unclear how stress-dependent long-wavelength elastic waves propagate through a repetitive rock-joint system with multiple joints. A preliminary numerical simulation was performed in in this study to investigate long-wavelength elastic wave propagation in regularly jointed rock masses using the three-dimensional distinct element code program. First, experimental studies using the quasi-static resonant column (QSRC) testing device are performed on regularly jointed disc column specimens for three different materials (acetal, aluminum, and gneiss). The P- and S-wave velocities of the specimens are obtained under various normal stress levels. The normal and shear joint stiffness are calculated from the experimental results using an equivalent continuum model and used as input parameters for numerical analysis. The spatial and temporal sizes are carefully selected to guarantee a stable numerical simulation. Based on the calibrated jointed rock model, the numerical and experimental results are compared.
The penetration testing provides 1 dimensional profiles of properties applicable to limited investigation areas, although N-value has been linked to a wide range of geotechnical design parameters based on empirical correlations. The nondestructive test using elastic waves is able to produce 2 or 3 dimensional property maps by inversion process with high efficiency in time and cost. As both N-value and elastic wave velocities share common dominant factors that include void ratio, degree of saturation, and in-situ effective stress, the correlation between the two properties has been empirically proposed by previous studies to assess engineering properties. This study presents the experimentally measured elastic wave velocities of Jumunjin sands under at-rest lateral displacement condition with varying the initial void ratio and degree of saturation. Results show that the stress condition predominantly influences the wave velocities whereas void ratio and saturation determine the stress-velocity tendency. The correlation among the dominant factors is proposed by multiple regression analysis with the discussion of relative impacts on parameters.
Longitudinal wave tests with finite elastic medium were performed to investigate the difference between measured values and theoretical values of propagation velocity and elasticity modulus. Each accelerometer was attached on finite elastic medium with same phase and different positions to check the particle motion. The results show that measured values of elasticity moduli from both time domain and frequency domain were similiar to theoretical value. Polarity of signal depends entirely on the phase of accelerometer. It proved that the propagation velocity and the particle motion are in the same direction when a compressive stress is applied. And also the propagation velocity and the particle motion depend on the intensity of the stress and material properties respectively.

Elastic wave velocity measurement technique such as impact-echo method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been successfully used to evaluate the moduli and strength of concrete. However, estimation results obtained by the NDT methods do not agree well with real things because longitudinal wave velocity is influenced by various factors. In this paper, among several factors influencing P-wave velocity, the influence of moisture content in concrete was investigated through the experiment. Test results show that longitudinal wave velocity is significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content. the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity measured by impact-echo method stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity measured by transmission method. During drying process with ages. the difference of increasing rate between longitudinal wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete is gradually increased. Therefore, to establish more accurate relationship between longitudinal wave velocity and strength, the difference of the increasing rate should be considered.
Cares should be taken when performing the P and S wave velocity loggings in engineering and environmental fields. Some of them are the effect of casing, which is installed to prevent the borehole collapsing when the drilling is done on the loose ground such as soil and/or soft rock, and the discrepancy of the velocities of the same media according to the difference of the source wave frequency spectrum. The elastic moduli obtained from the P and S wave velocity logging have the dynamic characteristics. To overcome these difficulties, the following suggestions are recommended; (1) develop and apply a careful drilling technique that can keep the borehole wall without a casing, and (2) apply the logging methods with the suitable frequency bandwidth for the object of the velocity logging. It is important to make the aseismological engineers understand the difference between the dynamic elastic moduli and the static ones obtained from mechanical test, and to advise them to use the information properly.

Recently harbor remodeling projects are seriously considered to enhance the loading and unloading capability of old container terminals and to make decrepit ports as eco-friendly harbor and waterfront spaces in many countries. In such a case, quantitative and qualitative evaluations on concrete harbor facilities are mandatory to determine the current structural integrity condition of aged materials. Once the remodeling project is determined to be carried out, the reusability of individual structural members and facilities including caissons, cell-blocks, and tetra-pods need to be decided based on the simple and economic visual inspection and/or nondestructive testing. In this study, the systematic quantitative evaluation procedure for determining the structural integrity condition and the reusability is studied based the nondestructive testing and evaluation methods. Conventional methods including Schmidt hammer test and ultrasonicpulse velocity methods and elastic wave based methods including impact echo test and surface wave test are applied to the old harbor facilities in five different sites. The compressive tests are also carried out to determine the elastic modulus and compressive strength of concrete materials.
