This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. The horizontal and rocking motions of the structure are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential functions, which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the deformed configuration of the structure as well as the sloshing behavior of the fluid. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and the frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary of the structure. The structure and the near-field soil medium are represented using the axisymmetric finite elements, while the far-field soil is modeled using dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structure embedded in ground as well as on ground, since it models both the soil medium and the structure directly. For the purpose of verification, earthquake response analyses are performed on several cases of liquid tanks on a rigid ground and on a homogeneous elastic half-space. Comparison of the present results with those by other methods shows good agreement. Finally, an application example of a reinforced concrete tank on a horizontally layered soil with a rigid bedrock is presented to demonstrate the importance of the soil-structure interaction effects in the seismic analysis for large liquid storage tanks.

The dynamic load caused by sloshing of internal fluid severely affects the structural and control stabilities of cylindrical liquid containers accelerating vertically. If the sloshing frequency of fluid is near the frequency of control system or the tank structure, large dynamic force and moment act on launching vehicles. For the suppression of such dynamic effects, generally flexible ring-type baffles are employed. In this paper, we perform the numerical analysis to evaluate the dynamic suppression effects of baffle. The parametric analysis is performed with respect to the baffle inner-hole diameter and two different baffle spacing types : equal spacing with respect to the tank and one with respect to the fluid height. The ALE (arbitrary Lagrangin-Eulerian) numerical method is adopted for the accurate and effective simulation of the hydrodynamic interaction between fluid and elastic structure.
The EG/AD/S model ice, originally developed by Timco (1986), was selected as the primary model ice material for the newly built MOERI Ice Model Basin in Korea. However, the existence of a sugar component in the EG/AD/S mixture may cause a serious maintenance problem, as described in certain references. This study focuses on the tests of the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and the EG/AD model ice. In order to understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice and to find a possible substitute for sugar, a series of tests with the EG/AD model ice were performed, and the results were compared to those of the EG/AD/S model ice. The relatively large size of the MOERI Ice Model Basin made it difficult to control the initial strength of model ice, so it took a much longer time to achieve the target strength. In order to obtain a lower strength and stiffness for the model ice, the amount of chemical additives may be varied to achieve the desired strength level. This paper is a preliminary study aimed at seeking a possible substitute for the original EG/AD/S model ice for utilization in a large-scale ice tank. To understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice, the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ice, such as flexural strength, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, were tested in the laboratory condition and compared to each other. The warm-up procedure seems to be an important factor to reduce ice strength in the tests, so it is discussed in detail.
In this study, we analyzed the relation between physical/mechanical properties and ballistic properties for several engineering ceramics that were expected to use as armor material. After physical/mechanical measurement, we measured ballistic properties about KE(Kinetic Energy, L/D=10.7, tungsten heavy alloy) and HEAT(High Explosive Anti-Tank, K215) projectiles. Increasing Young's modulus/density, hardness/density and flexural strength/density ratios, ballistic properties were generally increased. Especially it appeared that the ballistic property about KE projectile was lineally increased, as HEL/density ratio increased.
Recently, the construction of underwater structures has been gradually increased, but underwater concrete got some problems of quality deterioration and water contamination around cast-in-situ of construction. In addition, massive underwater structures such as LNG tank, underwater concrete structures of large and continuous high- strength subterranean wall under water are being demanded lower heat of hydration. In this paper, the mechanical properties of high-strength antiwashout underwater concrete (HAWC) containing with two kinds of mineral admixtures respectively were investigated. On the basis of these results, the pH value and suspended solids of HAWC manufactured in the mock-up test were 10.0$\Box$11.0 and 51 mg/${\iota}$ at 30 minutes later, respectively, initial and final setting time were about 30,37 hours, and the slump flow was 530$\pm$20Tm. In the placement at a speed of $27 m^3/hr$, there was no large difference in flowing velocity with or without reinforcing bar, and flowing slope was maintained at horizontal level. Compressive strength and elastic modulus of the cored specimen somewhat decreased as flowing distance was far; however, those of central area showed the highest value.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the efficacy of modeling a surface effect ship's air-cushion flexible seal utilizing a two-dimensional beam under steady state conditions. This effort is the initial phase of developing a more complex three-dimensional model of the air-seal-water fluid-structure interaction. The beam model incorporates the seal flexural rigidity and mass with large deformations while assuming linear elastic material response. The hydrodynamic pressure is derived utilizing the OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver for a given set of steady-state flow condition. The pressure distribution derived by the CFD solver is compared with the pressure required to deform the seal beam model. The air pressure, flow conditions and seal geometry are obtained from experimental analysis. The experimental data was derived from large-scale experimental tests utilizing a test apparatus of a canonical surface effect ship's flexible seal in a towing tank over a variety of test conditions.

This study was to investigate the effects of soil-structure relative stiffness on the structural characteristics of the cylindrical tank supported by soil. A standard example model of the farm silo rested on the Winkler's subsoil model was used for the analysis of soil-structure coupled system. In this paper, Winkler's constants 4,15 and l00kg/cm$^2$/cm were considered and the bottom plate thicknesses of the farm silo 20, 30, 50,100 and 150cm were adopted. For the given model the effects of bottom plate thickness were the most conspicuous at weakest Winkler's constant 4kg/ cm$^2$/cm. While when Winkler's constant is l00kg/cm$^2$/cm, the effect of the bottom plate thickness is almost negligible. On the other hand, when the bottom plate thickness is more than 100cm, the effects of elastic foundation were aknost disappeared. In design practice, it is hoped that the thicknesses of bottom plate should be determined reasonably because of it's considerable effect on the structural characteristics as the lOOcm thickness of bottom plate will not be practical value in usual sites.

Objectives: Existing cardiovascular simulators are used to evaluate artificial organs such as artificial hearts, prosthetic valves, and artificial blood vessels, and pulses are typically triggered using artificial hearts. However, the forms of pulse waves vary according to the location of arteries, and for precise assessment of artificial blood vessels, the development of simulators that generate diverse pressure pulse waves is necessary. This study developed a novel cardiovascular simulator that generates different forms of pulse waves. Methods: This simulator consists of a stepping motor, a slider-crank mechanism that transforms the rotation movement of a motor into the straight-line motion of a piston, a piston that generates pulsatile flows, a water tank that supplies fluids, an elastic tube made of silicon, and a device that adjusts the terminal resistance of fluids. Results & Conclusion: This study examined motor rotation and its operation under conditions similar to the physiological conditions of the heart. The simulator developed in this study produced diverse forms of waves, and the generated pressure waves well satisfied physiological conditions.
The membrane of the LNG carriers consists of thin strips of INVAR(Fe-36%Ni) steel plates, and the junction between INVAR strips is fabricated by welding. Thousands of the raised edge joints, regularly spaced, are located around all the side of the tank corner near the transverse bulkhead, and TIG welding is manually made on the top of the raised edges. Since the thickness of all the laminated edge plies is extremely thin and the weld position is under a bad accessibility, highly skilled workers are required to perform welding relatively for a long welding time. An alternative scheme for the corner membrane fabrication is proposed in the study to improve the installation workability and thus productivity. The scheme replaces the welded edges with the preformed corrugation ones. A panel strip with regularly-spaced corrugations is installed at the corner instead of the individual flat strip of which edge is vertically raised to be welded with the adjacent strip. In the study, a series of the evaluation on the corrugated edge members was performed to assess the applicability to the real LNG carrier fabrication. Opening displacement at the raised edge was experimentally examined. Elastic stiffness regressed from the displacement was nearly same in both edge types. Edge displacement and local stresses were calculated under hydrostatic pressure and temperature change due to liquefied cargo. Fatigue test was performed on both corrugated and welded edge specimens consisting of two or five plies of invar strips. Fatigue strength of the corrugated specimens was not less than that of the welded specimens.

The interaction of monochromatic incident waves with a horizontal flexible membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. First, analytic diffraction and radiation solutions for a submerged impermeable horizontal membrane are obtained. Second, the theoretical prediction was compared with a series of experiments conducted in a two-dimensional wave tank at Texas A & M University. The measured reflection and transmission coefficients reasonably follow the trend of predicted values. Using the developed computer program, the performance of surface-mounted or submerged horizontal membrane wave barriers is tested with various system parameters and wave characteristics. It is found that the properly designed horizontal flexible membrane can be an effective wave barrier.
