  • In this paper, effects of elastic energy of magnetostrictive film on the deflection of a cantilevered film-substrate system are investigated. The total energy including the elastic energy of magnetostrictive film is formulated. And it is minimized to give the curvatures and the position of neutral axis of the cantilevered system. To discuss the effects of the elastic energy of film in a measured system, three magnetostrictive unimorph cantilevers and a bimorph cantilever reported elsewhere are reviewed. It is shown that the assumption, since the thickness of film is much smaller than that of substrate the film elastic energy is negligible, can cause considerable error in evaluating magnetostrictive coefficients. Not the ratio of thicknesses but elastic energies between film and substrate is also shown to play important role in making decision whether the assumption is valid or not.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate on the strengths of asymmetric structures after we prepare such a structure consisting of a dense $Li_2ZrO_3$ top layer and porous $Al_2O_3$ substrate layer. The porosity and elastic modulus of the substrate layer are controlled by sintering temperature, which has three values of 1150, 1250 and $1350^{\circ}C$. The porosity is controlled in the range of ~ 30-50 vol%, elastic modulus is ~80-120 GPa and elastic mismatch $E_s/E_c$ is ~ 0.6-1.0. Indentation stress-strain curves are obtained and analyzed to evaluate the yield stress of the asymmetric structure by concentrated local loading of WC balls. Conventional flexural strengths are also obtained to evaluate the strength of the asymmetric structure. The results indicate that the local yield strength of the asymmetric structure has mid-values between the top and the substrate layer; however, the flexural strength of the asymmetric structure are mainly influenced by elastic modulus and strength of the substrate.

  • A simple method to measure the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio v of diamod-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on Si wafer was suggested. Using the anisotropic etching technique of Si we could make the edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate. DLC film is chemically so inert that we could not on-serve any surface damage after the etching process. The edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate exhibited periodic sinusoidal shape. By measuring the amplitude and the wavelength of the sinu-soidal edge we could determine the stain of the film required to adhere to the substrate. Since the residual stress of film can be determine independently by measurement of the curvature of film-substrate com-posite we could calculated the biaxial elastic modulus E/(1-v) using stress-strain relation of thin films. By comparing the biaxial elastic modulus with the plane-strain modulus E/(1-{{{{ { v}^{2 } }}) measured by nano-in-dentation we could further determine the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio independently. This method was employed to measure the mechanical properties of DLC films deposited by {{{{ { {C }_{6 }H }_{6 } }} rf glow discharge. The was elastic modulus E increased from 94 to 169 GPa as the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} increased from 127 to 221 V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} Poisson's ratio was estimated to be abou 0.16∼0.22 in this {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} range. For the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} less than 127V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} where the plastic deformation can occur by the substrate etching process however the present method could not be applied.

  • This investigation studies the characteristics of wave dispersion in sigmoid functionally graded (SFG) curved beams lying on an elastic substrate for the first time. Homogenization process was performed with the help of sigmoid function and two power laws. Moreover, various materials such as Zirconia, Alumina, Monel and Nickel steel were explored as curved beams materials. In addition, curved beams were rested on an elastic substrate which was modelled based on Winkler-Pasternak foundation. The SFG curved beams' governing equations were derived according to Euler-Bernoulli curved beam theory which is known as classic beam theory and Hamilton's principle. The resulted governing equations were solved via an analytical method. In order to validate the utilized method, the obtained outcomes were compared with other researches. Finally, the influences of various parameters, including wave number, opening angle, gradient index, Winkler coefficient and Pasternak coefficient were evaluated and indicated in the form of diagrams.

  • With the use of differential quadrature method (DQM), forced vibrations and resonance frequency analysis of functionally graded (FG) nano-size beams rested on elastic substrate have been studied utilizing a shear deformation refined beam theory which contains shear deformations influence needless of any correction coefficient. The nano-size beam is exposed to uniformly-type dynamical loads having partial length. The two parameters elastic substrate is consist of linear springs as well as shear coefficient. Gradation of each material property for nano-size beam has been defined in the context of Mori-Tanaka scheme. Governing equations for embedded refined FG nano-size beams exposed to dynamical load have been achieved by utilizing Eringen's nonlocal differential law and Hamilton's rule. Derived equations have solved via DQM based on simply supported-simply supported edge condition. It will be shown that forced vibrations properties and resonance frequency of embedded FG nano-size beam are prominently affected by material gradation, nonlocal field, substrate coefficients and load factors.

  • Effect of elastic/plastic mismatch on the fracture of Si3N4 coating in Si3N4/Si3N4 -BN bilayer was investigated by Hertzian indentation testing. A different amount of mismatch between two layers was induced by different BN addition in the substrate layer, and Hertizian cracks were induced by using WC ball indenter. As a result, as the elastic/plastic mismatch between coating and substrate layer increased, the coating fracture easily occurred. A bending stress induced by different elastic/plastic mismatch was main reason to cause the fracture of coating.

  • A circular plate with constant thickness, finite radius and stiff edge lying on an elastic halfspace is considered. The half-space consists of a soft functionally graded (FGM) layer with arbitrary varying elastic properties and a homogeneous elastic substrate. The plate bends under the action of arbitrary axisymmetric distributed load and response from the elastic half-space. A semi-analytical solution for the problem effective in whole range of geometric (relative layer thickness) and mechanical (elastic properties of coating and substrate, stiffness of the plate) properties is constructed using the bilateral asymptotic method (Aizikovich et al. 2009). Approximated analytical expressions for the contact stresses and deflections of the plate are provided. Numerical results showing the qualitative dependence of the solution from the initial parameters of the problem are obtained with high precision.

  • This research is aimed at studying the asymmetric thermal buckling of porous functionally graded (FG) annular nanoplates resting on an elastic substrate which are made of two different sets of porous distribution, based on nonlocal elasticity theory. Porosity-dependent properties of inhomogeneous nanoplates are supposed to vary through the thickness direction and are defined via a modified power law function in which the porosities with even and uneven type are approximated. In this model, three types of thermal loading, i.e., uniform temperature rise, linear temperature distribution and heat conduction across the thickness direction are considered. Based on Hamilton's principle and the adjacent equilibrium criterion, the stability equations of nanoporous annular plates on elastic substrate are obtained. Afterwards, an analytical solution procedure is established to achieve the critical buckling temperatures of annular nanoplates with porosities under different loading conditions. Detailed numerical studies are performed to demonstrate the influences of the porosity volume fraction, various thermal loading, material gradation, nonlocal parameter for higher modes, elastic substrate coefficients and geometrical dimensions on the critical buckling temperatures of a nanoporous annular plate. Also, it is discussed that because of present of thermal moment at the boundary conditions, porous nanoplate with simply supported boundary condition doesn't buckle.

  • This article investigates the energy harvesting characteristics of a magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT) under transverse vibration. To this end, the well-known lumped parameter model is used to represent the coupled multiphysics problem mathematically. The proposed system consists of the MEE-CNT layer on top and an inactive substrate layer at the bottom. The substrate is considered to be made of either an isotropic or composite material. Basic laws such as Gauss's Law, Newton's Law and Faraday's Law are used to arrive at the governing equations. Surface electrodes across the beam are used to harvest the electric potential produced, together with a wound coil, for the generated magnetic potential. The influence of various distributions of the CNT and its volume fraction, substrate material, length-to-thickness ratio, and thickness ratio of substrate to MEE layer on the energy harvesting behaviour is thoroughly discussed. Further, the effect of external resistances and changes in substrate material on the response is analysed and reported. The article aims to explore smart material-based energy harvesting systems, focusing on their behaviour when reinforced with carbon nanotubes. The results of this study may lead to an improved understanding of the design and analysis of CNT-based smart structures.

  • This paper studies nonlinear free vibration characteristics of nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nanobeams resting on nonlinear elastic substrate having geometrical imperfection by considering piezoelectric reinforcement scheme. The piezoelectric reinforcement can cause an enhanced vibration behavior of smart nanobeams under magnetic field. All of previously reported studies on MEE nanobeams ignore the influences of geometric imperfections which are very substantial due to the reason that a nanobeam cannot be always perfect. Nonlinear governing equations of a smart nanobeam are derived based on classical beam theory and an analytical trend is provided to obtained nonlinear vibration frequency. This research shows that changing the volume fraction of piezoelectric constituent in the material has a great influence on vibration behavior of smart nanobeam under electric and magnetic fields. Also, it can be seen that nonlinear vibration behaviors of smart nanobeam are dependent on the magnitude of exerted electric voltage, magnetic potential, hardening elastic foundation and geometrical imperfection.
