  • In the strengthening of the existed reinforced concrete(RC) structures, it is required that the more rational strengthening method and the amounts of strengthening materials would be decided under the consideration of the present state of RC structures. Therefore, this study examined the strengthening effects of concrete cylinders strengthened with carbon fiber sheet(CFS). In this studying we modeled the reduction of internal forces and the initial strains of concrete cylinders as the load history over the elastic limit. From the results, it revealed that the strengthening of two layer CFS was more effective on the concrete cylinders under the action of load history such as cyclic and cracking load.

  • The conventional simulators used the expensive commercial artificial heart with a limited performance, and focused on replicating the heart function. The arterial pressure is the key factor of the cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study is to develop a simulator focused on the pressure wave. The simulator is composed of a step motor, slider-crank mechanism, piston-cylinder, two check valves, a elastic tube, and two reservoirs. With the changes of design parameters, the functions of the simulator were evaluated. The simulator shows the good agreement of the characteristics of the cardiovascular system.

  • Despite the frequent use of ring-stiffened cylinders as a submarine pressure hull or members of various types of offshore sutructures, their ultimate strength analysis methods have not been well established because of their complex structural characteristics. This paper has established the method how to use commercial softwares based on the finite element method to implement the ultimate strength analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders covering both types of initial imperfections, I. e. initial deformation and initial stress by combining two separately offered functions of common commercial finite element softwares, linear elastic buckling analysis and nonlinear stress analysis. Developed method was applied to one of the world-widely used commercial softwares, ABAQUS for the analysis of ring-stiffened cylinders. This paper ends with some useful information about the imperfection sensitivity of ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders.

  • The high precision analysis by the p-version of the finite element method are fairly well established as highly efficient method for linear elastic problems, especially in the presence of stress singularity. It has been noted that the merits of p-version are accuracy, modeling simplicity, robustness, and savings in user's and CPU time. However, little has been done to exploit their benefits in elasto-plastic analysis. In this paper, the p-version finite element model is proposed for the materially nonlinear analysis that is based on the incremental theory of plasticity, the associated flow rule, and von-Mises yield criteria. To obtain the solution of nonlinear equation, the Newton-Raphson method and initial stiffness method, etc are used. Several numerical examples are tested with the help of the square plates with cutout, the thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure, and the center cracked plate under tensile loading. Those results are compared with the there cal solutions and the numerical solutions of ADINA software.

  • In this paper, the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is developed for dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell equations of elastic wave motion with nonlinear grading patterns under shock loading. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposite cylinder are obtained based on a micro-mechanical model. In this study, four kinds of grading patterns are assumed for carbon nanotube mechanical properties. The displacements can be approximated using shape function so, the multiquadrics (MQ) Radial Basis Functions (RBF) are used as the shape function. In order to discretize the derived equations in time domains, the Newmark time approximation scheme with suitable time step is used. To demonstrate the accuracy of the present method for dynamic analysis, at the first a problem verifies with analytical solution and then the present method compares with the finite element method (FEM), finally, the present method verifies by using the element free Galerkin (EFG) method. The comparison shows the high capacity and accuracy of the present method in the dynamic analysis of cylindrical shells. The capability of the present method to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell is demonstrated by dynamic analysis of the cylinder with different kinds of grading patterns and angle of nanocomposite reinforcements. The present method shows high accuracy, efficiency and capability to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell, which it furnishes a ground for a more flexible design.

  • Recent construction activity of infrastructures has been booming and accelerating to incur shortage of river sand for concrete works. Thus, sea sand has been excessively used instead of river sa.nd, that directly causes to decrease the quality and the durability of concrete, and then might lead to the collapse of concrete structures. The purpose of this experimental research is not only to develop high-strength concrete using sea sand, but also to investigate mechanical properties of high-strength concrete, such as elastic moduli, compressive strength and etc, which could be used for important design data of concrete structures. Rational analytic formula for elastic moduli have been proposed together with those for the splitting tensile strength and the flexural strength, which are to be predicted from compressive strength of concrete cylinder. Optimum water-cement and water-binder ratio have been experimentally obtained so as to develop high compressive strength with and without using silica fume as a admixture for concrete. It is noted that experimental elastic moduli for high strength concrete above aCk=330kgf /cm2 are less than those by the Code. Appropriate amount of concrete mixture has been experimentally investigated so as to develop maximum compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength.

  • Recently, a tiny piezoelectric linear motor using a vibration made of the transducer has been invented. The motor consists of a shaft, mobile element, and piezoelectric transducer using a piezoelectric radial mode bimorph disk. The fringe of the bimorph disk is fixed firmly which means this area has no degree of freedom. Therefore, the radial mode of the tranducer transfers to the flexurd mode. The mobile elements move along the shaft by the impact force generated by the flexurd mode of the piezoelectric transducer. The piezoelectric ceramic disks have thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.5 mm. The elastic disk is introduced between two disks of the ceramic, which has thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.8 mm. The fringe of the elastic disk is fixed by a brass cylinder which height is 1.2 mm. The Pyrex shaft is used which has diameter of 1 mm and height of 10 mm. The motors are operated at their resonant frequencies. The dynamic properties of the motor have been intensively measured and analyzed according to the applied voltage wave forms at the resonant frequencies. As the sawtooth and rectangular voltage waves are applied, the velocity, the thrust force, and the velocity dependence of the mobile position are measured. The dynamic characteristics are also analyzed within a period of each wave using laser vibrometer. The velocity of the mobile is moderately constant along the shaft. The better dynamic characteristics are obtained in the case of applying the rectangular wave.

  • It was used boundary element method(BEM) and analysed axisymmetric problem to solve hydraulic cylinder for large vessel acting uniform internal pressure(25N/m super(2)) within elastic limit. This paper was utilized the carbon steel tubes for machine structural purposed model, inner radius was 150mm and outer radius was 250mm, axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element was used. The important results obtained in this study were summarized as follows. Radial, tangential and shearing stress occured the maximum stresses(48, -20 and 34MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum stresses(32, -4 and 18MPa) at the outer radius of the hydraulic cylinder for large vessel. But negative signs have meaning compressive stress and stress diminution ratio was about 0.15MPa/mm. The use of isoparametric element raised accuracy and the increment of input data lessened the error in internal point but computer run-time was increased. The double node was improved the internal solutions to settle discontinuity at corner and the double exponential formula lessened error of stress value at boundary neighborhood. And then coincidence between the analytical and exact results is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analytical by BEM is reliable.

  • In this paper, the stress intensity factor, energy release rate and crack opening displacement are computed using the finite element method for axisymmetric viscoelastic cylinders with the penny-shaped and circumferential cracks. The triangular elements with quarter point nodes are used to describe the stress singularity around the crack edge. The analytical solutions are also derived by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle and compared with the numerical results to show the validity and accuracy of the presented method. Viscoelastic materials are assumed to behave elastically in dilatation and like a three-parameter standard linear solid.

  • If the railways consisting of soil subgrade is applied to repetitive loading, elastic deformation and plastic deformation will occur at the same time. So the repeat traffic loading condition should be considered to predict the long-term deformation on railway roadbed. In this study, laboratory data from the repeated load triaxial tests and cylinder model test were used to predict accumulated settlement on railway foundation and results were analyed based on the nonliear models and stress state considered. It has proposed predict model using power function model on plastic settlement of roadbed materials.
