I-type girders are widely applied as very economical sections in plate girder bridges. There has been research on developing composite laminated panels, curved plates reinforced with closed-end ribs, and new forms of ribs and compression flanges for steel box girders. However, there is a limitation in analyzing the exact cause of local buckling caused by an I-type girder's webs. Therefore, an I-type girder's web was modeled using the finite element analysis program LUSAS 17.0 before and after reinforcement. We checked for the minimum thickness criteria presented in the Korea highway bridge design code, and the cause of buckling after performing a linear elastic buckling analysis of dead and live loads was analyzed. Before reinforcement, an eigenvalue (λ1) at the 1st mode was 0.7025, the critical buckling load was smaller than the applied load, and there is a buckling. After reinforcement, when applying vertical and horizontal stiffeners to the web part of the girder at support, a Nodal line was formed, the eigenvalue was 1.5272, and buckling stability was secured. To improve buckling trace of the girder at the support, an additional plate was applied to the web at the support to ensure visual and structural safety, but buckling occurs at center of web. The eigenvalue (λ1) was 3.5299, and this method is efficient for reinforcing the web of the support.

A study result of buckling reliability is presented for the axially compressed imperfect elastic cylinder. Multi-mode analysis program is developed from Karman-Donnell Equation for the calculation of the buckling load of the cylindrical she1l. Geometric intial imperfection is approximated by double Fourier series of which coefficients are assumed random variables with jointly normal distribution characteristics. Crude Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to calculate the probabilistic failure properties of several cases with various imperfection Conditions.

Basically, ship structure consists of the plate members, and a strength of overall ship structurnds on the stiffness and strength of ship platings. If buckling which causes to deflect ship plate members occurs, the stiffness of ship plate markedly decreases, and thus buckling has a serious effect on the stiffness or strength of overall ship structure. Buckling is one of the most important design criteria when we scantle structure members. In the present study, a inplane rigidity of a compressed ship plate above buckling load is proposed. The proposed inplane rigidity is available in the elastic or elasto-Plastic ranges in order to can out a more efficient and reliable design.

A model of the process of local buckling in tubular steel structural elements is presented. It is assumed that this degrading phenomenon can be lumped at plastic hinges. The model is therefore based on the concept of plastic hinge combined with the methods of continuum damage mechanics. The state of this new kind of inelastic hinge is characterized by two internal variables: the plastic rotation and the damage. The model is valid if only one local buckling appears in the plastic hinge region; for instance, in the case of framed structures subjected to monotonic loadings. Based on this damage model, a new finite element that can describe the development of local buckling is proposed. The element is the assemblage of an elastic beamcolumn and two inelastic hinges at its ends. The stiffness matrix, that depends on the level of damage, the yielding function and the damage evolution law of the two hinges define the new finite element. In order to verify model and finite element, several small-scale frames were tested in laboratory under monotonic loading. A lateral load at the top of the frame was applied in a stroke-controlled mode until local buckling appears and develops in several locations of the frame and its ultimate capacity was reached. These tests were simulated with the new finite element and comparison between model and test is presented and discussed.
The present paper researches post-buckling behaviors of geometrically imperfect concrete beam resting on elastic foundation reinforced with graphene oxide powders (GOPs) based on finite element method (FEM). Distribution of GOPs are considered as uniform and linearly graded through the thickness. Geometric imperfection is considered as first buckling mode shape of the beam, the GOP reinforced beam is rested in initial position. The material properties of GOP reinforced composite have been calculated via employment of Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme. The provided refined beam element verifies the shear deformation impacts needless of any shear correction coefficient. The post-buckling load-deflections relations have been calculated via solving the governing equations having cubic non-linearity implementing FEM. Obtained findings indicate the importance of GOP distributions, GOP weight fraction, matrix material, geometric imperfection, shear deformation and foundation parameters on nonlinear buckling behavior of GOP reinforced beam.

In this paper, a method to overcome inefficiency of the finite element method in the calculation of compressive strength of one-sided stiffened plates, is proposed. In this method the collapse modes of stiffened plates are assumed as follows. a) Overall buckling $\rightarrow$ Overall collapse b) Local buckling $\rightarrow$ Overall collapse c) Local buckling $\rightarrow$ Local collapse In each collapse mode, shape of deflection is assumed, and then elastic large deformation analysis based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method is carried out. One-sided stiffening effect is considered by taking into account of the moment due to eccentricity. Plastic analysis by assuming hinge lines is also carried out. The ultimate strength of a stiffened plate is obtained as the point of intersection of the elastic analysis curve and the plastic one. From this study, it is concluded that the angles between the plastic hinge lines in plastic collapse mode are determined as the ones which give the minimum collapse load, and these angles are different from the ones assumed in the previous studies. Minimum stiffness ratios can also be calculated. Calculated results according to this method show good agreements with the results by the finite element method.
The influence of spacers on the behaviour and ultimate capacity of intermediate length CFS open section columns under axial compression is investigated in this paper. The focus of the research lies in the cross- section predominantly, failed by distortional buckling. This paper made an attempt to either delay or eliminate the distortional buckling mode by the introduction of transverse elements referred herein as spacers. The cross-sections investigated have been selected by performing the elastic buckling analysis using CUFSM software. The test program considered three different columns having slenderness ratios of 35, 50 & 60. The test program consisted of 14 pure axial compression tests under hinged-hinged end condition. Models have been analysed using finite element simulations and the obtained results are compared with the experimental tests. The finite element package ABAQUS has been used to carry out non-linear analyses of the columns. The finite element model incorporates material, geometric non-linearities and initial geometric imperfection of the specimens. The work involves a wide parametric study in the column with spacers of varying depth and number of spacers. The results obtained from the study shows that the depth and number of spacers have significant influence on the behaviour and strength of the columns. Based on the nonlinear regression analysis the design equation is proposed for the selected section.
Element based differential quadrature method (EDQM) has been applied to analyze static, stability and free vibration of non-homogeneous orthotropic rectangular plates of variable or stepped thickness. The Young's modulus and the density are assumed to vary in exponential form in X-direction whereas the thickness is assumed to vary linear, parabolic or exponential variation in one or two directions. In-plane loading is assumed to vary linearly. Various combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge conditions (regular and irregular boundary) have been considered. Continuous plates could also be handled with ease. In this paper, formulation for equilibrium, buckling and free vibration problems is discussed and several numerical examples are solved using EDQM and compared with the published results.
Stability equations that evaluate the elastic critical axial load of columns in any type of construction with sidesway uninhibited, partially inhibited, and totally inhibited are derived in a classical manner. These equations can be applied to the stability of frames (unbraced, partially braced, and totally braced) with rigid, semirigid, and simple connections. The complete column classification and the corresponding three stability equations overcome the limitations and paradoxes of the well known alignment charts for braced and unbraced columns and frames. Simple criteria are presented that define the concept of partially braced columns and frames, as well as the minimum lateral bracing required by columns and frames to achieve non-sway buckling mode. Various examples are presented in detail that demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the complete set of stability equations.
Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.
