  • Seismic performance evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Incremental Dynamic Analysis(IDA) is a analysis method that has recently emerged to estimate structural performance under earthquakes. This method can obtained the entire range of structural performance from the linear elastic stage to yielding and finally collapse by subjecting the structure to increasing levels of ground acceleration. Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. The nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute seismic performance of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. The nonlinear approximate methods, which is more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures, are extensively studied. The uncoupled modal response history analysis(UMRHA) is a method which can find the nonlinear reponse of the structures for ESDF from the pushover curve using NRHA or response spectrum. The direct spectrum analysis(DSA) is approximate nonlinear method to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis. In this study, the practicality and the reliability of seismic performance of approximate nonlinear methods for incremental dynamic analysis of mixed building structures are to be compared.

  • This paper deals with an analysis of crustal movement for the sourthern part of Korean peninsula using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data. An earthquake of more than 5.0 occurred in the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula, and it is necessary to evaluate the risk of earthquakes in various ways.In order to reveal long-term tectonic movement patten in Pohang and Gyeongju provinces, we derived crustal movement parameters related with elastic theory. We used GAMIT/GLOBK for analyzing seven-year interval GNSS data of CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Stations). The azimuth of velocity vectors trended generally about 110° with an mean magnitude of 31mm/yr.The main characteristics of the strain change for seven-year in Korea obtaind from our study. Direction of the principal axis of the maximum compression is ENE-WSW as a whole, through there are some exceptions. The mean rate of the maximum shear strain change is (0.11±0.07)μ/yr, that is approximately one third that of Chubu district, Central Japan. Taking into account our results, the mean rate of maximum shear in southern part of Korean peninsula is considered as reasonable. The mean azimuth of principal strain is about (85.4°±26.8°). There are some exceptions of azimuth because the average azimuth differ from the left and right side in Yangsan fault which are about (73.2°±21.5°) and (105.2°±17.0°) respectively, It is noteworthy that the high seismicity areas in the southern part of Korea peninsula almost coincides with the area of large strain rate. As a conclusion, it could be stated that the our study represents the characteristics of crustal deformation in the southern part of peninsula, and contributes to the researches on earthquake disaster management.

  • In order to exactly evaluate the seismic collapse capacity of a structure, probabilistic approach is required by considering uncertainties related to its structural properties and ground motion. Regardless of the types of uncertainties, they influence on the seismic response of a structures and their effects are required to be estimated. An incremental dynamic analysis(IDA) is useful to investigate uncertainty-propagation due to ground motion. In this study, a 3-story steel moment-resisting frame is selected for a prototype frame and analyzed using the IDA. The uncertainty-propagation is assessed with categorized parameters representing epistemic uncertainties, such as the seismic weight, the inherent damping, the yield strength, and the elastic modulus. To do this, the influence of the uncertainty-propagation to the seismic collapse capacity of the prototype frame is probabilistically evaluated using the incremental dynamic analyses based on the Monte-Carlo simulation sampling with the Latin hypercube method. Of various parameters related to epistemic uncertainty-propagation, the inherent damping is investigated to be the most influential parameter on the seismic collapse capacity of the prototype frame.

  • The resonant column testing is a laboratory testing method to determine the shear modulus and material damping factor of soils. The method has been widely used for many applications and its importance has increased. Since the first use of the testing method in 1960's, the low-technology electronic devices fir testing and data acquisition have limited the measurement only to the amplitude of the linear spectrum. The limitations of the testing method are also attributed to the assumption of linear-elastic material in the theory of the resonant column testing and also to the incomplete understanding of the dynamic behaviour of the resonant column testing device. Recently, Joh et al. proposed a theory to overcome the limitations of the resonant column testing by deriving the equation of motion and providing its solution for the resonant column testing device. This study proposed the improved data reduction and analysis method for the resonant column testing, thanks to the advanced data acquisition system and the new theoretical solution for the resonant column testing system. For the verification of the proposed data reduction and analysis method, the numerical simulation of the resonant column testing was performed by the finite element analysis. Also, a series of resonant column testing were performed fir Joomunjin sand, which verified the feasibility of the proposed method and revealed the limitations of the conventional data reduction and analysis method.

  • A method is presented for evaluating the economic efficiency of a semi-active magneto-rheological (MR) damper system for cable-stayed bridges under earthquake loadings. An optimal MR damper capacity maximizing the cost-effectiveness is estimated for various seismic characteristics of ground motion. The economic efficiency of MR damper system is addressed by introducing the life-cycle cost concept. To evaluate the expected damage cost, the probability of failure is estimated. The cost-effectiveness index is defined as the ratio of the sums of the expected damage costs and each device cost between a bridge structure with the MR damper system and a bridge structure with elastic bearings. In the evaluation of cost-effectiveness, the scale of damage cost is adopted as parametric variables. The results of the evaluation show that the MR damper system can be a cost-effective design alternative. The optical capacity of MR damper is increased as the seismic hazard becomes severe.

  • To investigate the effect of the flexible artery wall on the blood flow, three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out for analyzing the time-dependent incompressible flows of Newtonian fluids constrained by a flexible wall. The Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow were solved using the P2P1 Galerkin finite element method, and mesh movement was achieved using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation. The Newmark method was employed for solving the dynamic equilibrium equations for the deformation of a linear elastic solid. To avoid complexity due to the necessity of additional mechanical constraints, we used a combined formulation that includes both the fluid and structure equations of motion to produce a single coupled variational equation. The results showed that the flexibility of the carotid wall significantly affects flow phenomena during the pulse cycle. The flow field was also found to be strongly influenced by the bifurcation angle.

  • Recently, various methods for preparing a flexible electrode for implementing a wearable sensor have been introduced. Wearable sensors show similar tendency to use various polymer substrates, which provides elasticity suitable to the motion of human body. In this paper, a highly elastic silver nanowire based electrode was prepared on a sponge-based stretchable substrate, and electrical properties were evaluated. Silver nanowires were grown using a wet chemical synthesis, impregnated into a plasma-treated sponge, and then heat treated at a low temperature. In particular, the plasma surface treatment of the sponge enables uniform coating of silver nanowires. The flexible sponge electrode showed reliable electrical resistance changes over 160 repeated tensile-compression cycles.

  • In this paper, the finite element method for the elastodynamic axisymmetric fracture analysis is presented in matrix form through the application of the Galerkin method to the time integral equations of motion with no inertia forces. Isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral element and triangular crack tip singular elements with one-quarter node are used in the mesh division of the finite element model. To show the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, the infinite elastic medium with the penny shaped crack is solved first and compared with the analytical solution and the numerical results by the finite difference method and the boundary element method existing in the published literatures, and then the dynamic stress intensity factors of solid and hollow cylinders of finite dimensions haying penny-shaped cracks and internal and external circumferential tracks are computed in detail.

  • The fabrication process for miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor was studied using micromachining technique. Two types of sensor structure, free standing membrane type and diving beard type, were proposed and researched for establishing the fabrication process. The membrane type structure was easy to change the sensor shape but had the limitation for miniaturizing, because the size of the sensor depends on the silicon substrate thickness. The diving board type structure has the advantage of miniaturization and of free motion. Since the elastic modulus is not trio high, SiN film is expected to be adequate for the supporting membrane of magnetic sensor. The selectivity of $H_2O_2$for sputtered W with respect to Fe-B-Si, which was studded for magnetic sensor materials, was high enough to be removed after using as a protection layer. Therefore, the diving board type process using the silicon nitride film for the supporter of the sensor material and the sputtered W for protection layer is expected to be useful fur miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor.

  • In this paper, the dispersion characteristics of elastic waves propagation in sandwich nano-beams with functionally graded (FG) face-sheets reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is investigated based on various high order shear deformation beam theories (HOSDBTs) as well as nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). In order to align CNTs as symmetric and asymmetric in top and bottom face-sheets with respect to neutral geometric axis of the sandwich nano-beam, various patterns are employed in this analysis. The sandwich nano-beam resting on Pasternak foundation is subjected to thermal, magnetic and electrical fields. In order to involve small scale parameter in governing equations, the NSGT is employed for this analysis. The governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle based on various HSDBTs. Then the governing equations are solved using analytical method. A detailed parametric study is conducted to study the effects of length scale parameter, different HSDBTs, the nonlocal parameter, various aligning of CNTs in thickness direction of face-sheets, different volume fraction of CNTs, foundation stiffness, applied voltage, magnetic intensity field and temperature change on the wave propagation characteristics of sandwich nano-beam. Also cut-off frequency and phase velocity are investigated in detail. According to results obtained, UU and VA patterns have the same cut-off frequency value but AV pattern has the lower value with respect to them.
