  • A mid-size RC test apparatus (MRCA) equipped with a program is developed that can test samples up to D=10 cm diameter and H=20 cm height which are larger than usual samples used in practice. Using the developed RC test apparatus, two types of crushed trackbed foundation materials were tested in order to get the shear modulus reduction curves of the materials with changing of shear strain levels. For comparison purpose, large repetitive triaxial compression tests (LRT) with samples of height H=60cm and diameter D=30 cm were performed also. Resilient modulus obtained from the LRT was converted to shear modulus by considering elastic theory and strain level conversion and were compared to shear modulus values from the MRCA. It is found from this study that the MRCA can be used to test the trackbed foundation materials properly. It is found also that strain levels of $E_{v2}$ mostly used in the field should be verified considering the shear modulus reduction curves and proper values of $E_{v2}$ of trackbed foundation must be used considering the strain level verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a stochastic finite element formulation which takes into account the randonmess in the material and geometrical parameters. The formulation is proposed for plate structures, and is based on the weighted integral approach. Contrary to the case of elastic modulus, plate thickness contributes to the stiffness as a third-order function. Furthermore, Poisson's ratio is even more complex since this parameter appears in the constitutive relations in the fraction form. Accordingly, we employ Taylor's expansion to derive decomposed stochastic field functions in ascending order. In order to verify the proposed formulation, the results obtained using the proposed scheme are compared with those in the literature and those of Monte Carlo analysis as well.

  • Since the 20th century, the business of railway was invaded by the invention of airplanes and vehicles in the field of the transportation of passenger and commercial products, however, in the 21st century, the fervent development of a high-speed railway made possible the huge capacity of transporting passengers and commercial freight, so the railway industry is facing a new era of railway revolution. The 200 years old railway tradition includes the history of railway bridges built in areas of river, valley and metropolitan region and in that, the number of constructions of railway bridges that is composed of cable-stayed bridges is increasing as one of the most optimal bridges considering the quality of materials and the span of continuous-welded long rail. Thanks to the minimized effects of the fixed load on the stiffening girder section by delivering the fixed load which is applied to the pylon with the composition of elastic supporting-points by using cables and the effective structural system that can throughly resist extra loads in addition to fixed load, the long-extended span of a bridge becomes possible. In this structural system, the load that is applied to the stiffening girder section forms a flow pattern and in the process of these load delivery, there will be a necessity to examine the concentration of stress occurred in the cable-anchor system of the cable.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis of dynamic characteristics for the plunger-type solenoid was used for a high speed solenoid valve with fast switching is discussed. The theoretic analysis of the electromagnetic field including eddy currents in the solenoid is studied by using permeance. The optimum value of design parameters which are a mass and an area of the plunger, a source voltage, a elastic modulus of the spring, a stroke, a number of turns, are obtained by the results of the investigation on effect of a parameter on others. And dynamic characteristics of acting solenoid that is the variation of magnetic force, displacement, solenoid current are investigated.

  • Backfill grouting and consolidation grouting are major reinforcing methods that enhance the stability of tunnel by filling the gap between the tunnel lining and the ground and increasing the stiffness of the ground. However, the effect of the grouting on the tunnel lining is not well established. Field measurements such as pressuremeter test, Lugeon test, and lining instruments were peformed to analyze the grouting effect on the tunnel lining for a waterway tunnel. The elastic modulus was increased up to 5 times than that of original rock mass due to consolidation grouting. This study shows that only 10% of grout pressure was acting on the back face of the tunnel lining. The final results are expected to be used for the design of the concrete lining.

  • EPS used in lost foam casting elastic modulus is extremely low. So it is necessary to derive machining conditions for effective cutting. Therefore this study were analyzed end-milling machining conditions to affecting the surface roughness of EPS foam. The machining conditions were set to depth, feed, and RPM at 3-level. And 18experimental conditions were derived using mixed orthogonal array. The most important condition for surface roughness is RPM. In addition, RPM machining condition range test that can realize surface roughness less than $10{\mu}m$ was performed. he range of RPM conditions is more than 15,000. However the range of RPM conditions is a condition that is difficult to use in actual field. In the future variance analysis and experiments are needed to derive the range of machining conditions available.

  • Generally, the method used most widely for rock mass classification is considering the rock strength and development of joint frequency. However, if rock bed has micro-crack and long joint, this method is not rational. Therefore, the difficulties of excavation in the rock bed with complicated geological condition are decided by combining joint frequency. indoor tests (uniaxiall compressive strength, point load test, indoor elastic wave velocity, etc.) and field seismic refraction survey, and the rock mass classification should be implemented by considering their interrelationship.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior in GTA butt welded joints of Al-Alloy 5052-H38 was examined using Single Edge Notched(SEN) specimens. It is well known that welding residual stress has marked influence on fatigue crack growth rate in welded structure. In the general area of fatigue crack growth in the presence of residual stress, it is noted that the correction of stress intensity factor (K) to account for residual stress is important for the determination of both stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and stress ratio(R) during a loading cycle. The crack growth rate(da/dN) in welded joints were correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.Keff) which was estimated by superposition of the respective stress intensity factors for the residual stress field and for the applied stress. However, redistribution of residual stress occurs during crack growth and its effect is not negligible. In this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of the welded joints were examined by using superposition of redistributed residual stress and discussed in comparison with the results of the initial welding residual stress superposition.

  • This paper presents a solution of the vibration reduction in the hollow shafts by using magentorehological( MR) elastomer. Proposed active damping structure is built by embedding the MR elastomers whose elastic modulus is controllable by an applied magnetic field. MR elastomers consist of synthetic rubber filled with micron-sized magnetizable particles. For reduction of vibration, dynamic damper of hollow shaft is designed by using MR elastomer and equipped in the hollow shaft for the application to drive shaft. Experiment results are shown through the experiments to confirm the effect of MR elastomer dynamic damper for vibration reduction. Thus, the designed damping structure can be applied to vibration absorber used in drive shafts as well as the propeller shafts.

  • Generally, characteristics of electromechanical actuators are coupled with the mechanical and the electrical properties. Important mechanical parameters of these actuators are the achievable force and displacement in the presence of electric field. These mechanical parameters are related to the stress and strain of the materials and the actuator geometry. This paper presents how to measure the blocked force by using the micro-balance. The blocked force is defined as the force produced by the transducer under an applied voltage when the tip is constrained to zero motion. Also, a theoretical force by using the cantilever beam model is calculated under elastic domain. From the sample of 4 cm $\times$ 1 cm $\times$ 20 $\mu$m, the blocked farce measured from the equipment is 20.3 $\mu$N at 8 V$_{DC}$. By comparing it with the theoretical value, 24.9 $\mu$N, the blocked force measurement is acceptable. The furce measurement is also investigated with different AC electric fields and the frequency.
