Flavone Biotransformation by Aspergillus niger and the Characterization of Two Newly Formed Metabolites

  • Aspergillus niger isolated from Allium sativum was used at large scale fermentation (150 mg flavone/200ml medium) to obtain suitable amounts of the products, efficient for identification. Then spectral analysis (UV, IR, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR) and mass spectrometry were performed for the two products, which contributed to the identification process. The metabolite (1) was identified as 2'-hydroxydihydrochalcone, and the metabolite (2) was identified as 2'-hydroxyphenylmethylketone, which were more active than flavone itself. Antioxidant activities of the two isolated metabolites were tested compared with ascorbic acid. Antioxidant activity of metabolite (1) was recorded 64.58% which represented 79% of the antioxidant activity of ascorbic acid, and metabolite (2) was recorded 54.16% (67% of ascorbic acid activity). However, the antioxidant activity of flavone was recorded 37.50% which represented 46% of ascorbic acid activity. The transformed products of flavone have anti-microbial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans, with MIC was recorded $250{\mu}g/ml$ for metabolite (2) against all three organism and 500, 300, and $300{\mu}g/ml$ for metabolite (1) against tested microorganisms (P. aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumonia, Fusarium moniliforme, A. flavus, Saccharomyces cerviceae, Kluveromyces lactis and C. albicans) at this order.

Independent Predictors for Recurrence of Chronic Subdural Hematoma

  • Objective : Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the most frequent problems encountered in neurosurgery. Although burr-hole trephination is widely performed to treat CSDH, the incidence rate of recurrent CSDH is still 2-37%. The goal of this study is to determine the risk factors that affect recurrent CSDH. Methods : A total of 182 patients were included in this study who underwent burr-hole trephination. The clinical factors and radiographic features between the recurrence and the no recurrence groups were analyzed to find the parameters related to the postoperative recurrence of CSDH. Results : For the recurrence of CSDH that occurred in 25 patients (13.7%), among various risk factors, pre and postoperative midline displacements, which are more than 10 mm (p=0.000), and preoperative hemiparesis (p=0.026) had contributed to recurrent CSDH with statistical significance by univariate analysis. Unilateral CSDH were more frequently related to recurrent CSDH (16.3%), although it was not a statistical significant result (p=0.052). Furthermore, preoperative midline displacement only had statistical meaning for the recurrence of CSDH by multivariate analysis. Conclusion : This study indicates that the midline displacement on the preoperative computed tomography scan is the only independent predictor for the recurrence of CSDH.

태양전지 두께에 Ribbon 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Long-term Reliability Characteristics by Solar Cell Ribbon Thickness)

  • 본 논문에서는 태양전지의 Ribbon 두께(A-type:0.2mm, B-type:0.25mm)에 따라 3가지 온도조건 ($-40{\sim}65^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}85^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}105^{\circ}C$)으로 열충격 시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, A, B type 별 초기 평균효율은 15.2%로 같았다. 하지만, 열충격 시험(600 Cycle) 후 Condition 1에서 A-type 7.5%, B-type 7.7%, Condition 2에서는 8.6%, 13.2%를 나타내었다. Condition 3에서는 각각 11.6%, 19.9%의 감소율을 나타내었다. 열충격 시험 후 A-type보다 Ribbon두께가 두꺼운 B-type의 효율이 크게 감소하였다. 이는 A, B type 모두 이종재료 접합부의 금속간화합물(IMC)층이 형성되어 전기적 저항이 증대된 것으로 판단된다. 또한, B-type의 I-V 특성 곡선 및 EL을 분석한 결과, p-n층이 파괴되고, 병렬저항이 감소하여, 장기적 신뢰성에서 A-type 보다 더 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 향후 태양전지 Ribbon 형상에 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 대해 수치해석 및 시뮬레이션 분석이 수반되어야 할 것이다.

경주 지역의 지반공학적 지진 민감도 분석 (Analysis of Geotechnical Seismic Sensitivity in Gyeongju)

  • 역사적 지진 발생 기록이 풍부하고 양산 단층 영향권 내에 있어 지진 발생 가능성이 높은 경주 지역을 대상으로 지진민감도 분석을 수행하였다. 지형적 특성을 고려한 지반조사와 현장 및 실내 시험을 통하여 대상 지역 지반의 지층 구성과 각 지층의 동적 특성을 분석 평가하고, 이를 토대로 한 지반 응답 해석을 수행하였다. 9개의 시험공을 시추하여 2개소의 크로스홀 시험과 7개소의 다운홀 시험을 실시하였고, 시추부지 포함 13개소에서 SASW 시험도 수행하였다. X선 회절 및 풍화도 분석과 공진주 시험 등의 실내시험도 병행하였다. 이러한 시험 결과를 바탕으로 El Centro 지진에 의한 지표면 최대 가속도를 등가 선형 부지응답해석을 통해 평가한 결과 붕괴방지 수준에서 0.158g~0.286g, 기능수행 수준에서 0.067g~0.116g의 분포를 보였고 퇴적층에 의하여 형성된 경주 시가지 분지 지형에서 증폭정도가 심하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 해석 결과로 볼 때, 현행 건교부 기준 설계응답스펙트럼은 경우에 따라 지반 운동을 과소평가하고 지반 고유의 공진 현상을 고려하지 못하였다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 개선된 지반 분류방법을 소개하였고 부지고유의 지반응답평가의 중요성에 대해 제시하였다.

새로운 형태의 IMT-2000 기지국용 이중편파 다이버시티 능동형 배열안테나 (A New Type of the Active Array Antenna for IMT-2000 Base Stations by Using Dual-Polarization Diversity)

  • 본 논문은 IMT-2000 기지국에 적용할 이중편파 다이버시티 능동형 배열 안테나의 새로운 형태를 제안하고, 설계 및 개발하였다. 먼저 배열 안테나를 구성하게 될 단일 안테나 소자는 마이크로 스트립 패치 안테나로서 $\pm$ 45$^{\circ}$의 편파를 갖는 패치를 설계하여 IMT-2000의 송신부와 수신부를 커버할 수 있는 대역폭 (1,885~2,200 MHz)을 갖추고, 이중편파간에 16 ㏈ 이하의 격리도를 확보하며 이득은 7 ㏈i 이상으로 확보를 하였다. 최종적으로 2$\times$8 이중편파 능동형 배열 안테나에서는 저 전력증폭기의 분산 장착 기술을 위해 균일한 특성을 갖는 전력증폭기를 각 패치의 후면에 분산하여 1,200 W 이상의 EIRP와 20 ㏈ 이상의 편파간 격리도를 확보할 수가 있었다.

Ell3 Modulates the Wound Healing Activity of Conditioned Medium of Adipose-derived Stem Cells

  • While adipose-derived stem cell-conditioned medium (ADSC-CM) has been demonstrated to promote skin wound healing, the mechanism regulating this effect remains unelucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of Ell3 in the wound healing activity of ADSC-CM. In vitro analysis revealed that Ell3 suppression in ADSCs impairs the promotive activity of ADSC-CM on the proliferation and migration of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) and normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF). Consistently, the expression of MMP family genes, which regulate cell proliferation and migration, was significantly suppressed in MEF and NHDF treated with siEll3-transfected ADSC-CM. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 and interleukin-6, were highly expressed in MEF treated with siEll3-transfected ADSC-CM. The wound healing activity of siEll3-transfected ADSC-CM was significantly lower than that of the control in vivo. Our results suggest that Ell3 may contribute to the inhibition of inflammatory response during skin wound healing.

산악형 강수의 지형학적 영향 요인 추출에 관한 연구 (The Factor Analysis of Topography on Precipitation in Jeju-island)

  • 본 연구에서는 산악형 강수의 특성을 보이는 제주도의 여러 지형 조건과 강수량의 관계를 확인하고 강수량에 영향을 미치는 주요 인자를 분석하였다. 제주도는 원추형의 형태로 중심에 한라산이 있는 전형적인 산악형 지형이고 해발고도의 분포가 $EL.0^{\sim}1950m$로 다양하여 본 연구의 대상지역으로 선정하였다. 강우자료는 제주도 내 기상관서 4개소(제주, 서귀포, 성산포, 고산) 및 자동기상관측소(AWS) 13개소의 관측자료를 활용하였으며, 짧은 자료기간을 보완하기 위해 지역빈도해석을 적용하여 확률강우량을 산정하였다. 본 연구에서는 강수에 영향을 줄 수 있는 지형인자 6개를 지리정보시스템(GIS)을 이용하여 추출하였으며, 추출된 지형인자에 대하여 요인분석으로 대표 인자를 추출하고 요인과 실제변수들의 강수량에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위하여 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 검정결과 도출된 요인을 이용하면 강수량 산정 시 지형 변수들의 영향을 반영함과 동시에 보다 적은 수의 변수를 이용하여 지형 변수들을 모두 반영하였을 경우와 비슷한 결과를 얻는다는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 추후 지형 변수들을 추가로 확보하여 지형특성을 반영한 간편하고 합리적인 강수량을 산정하기 위한 추가 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

메트포르민과 아스피린의 약물상호작용 (Drug Interaction of Metformin and Aspirin in Rabbits)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aspirin (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) on the pharmacokinetics of metformin $(15\;mg/kg)$ in rabbits. The plasma concentration of metformin was decreased significantly (p<0.05) by co-administration of aspirin (10, 20 mg/kg) compared with control. Area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) of metformin was decreased significantly (p<0.05) by co-administration of aspirin (10, 20mg/kg) compared with control. Relative bioavailability $(R.B\%)$ of metformin by co-administration was 79.3 (5 mg/kg), 57.5 (10 mg/kg) and 62.5 (20 mg/kg). Peak plasma concentration of metformin was significantly (p<0.05) decreased by co-administration of aspirin (10, 20 mg/kg) compared with control. The elimination rate constant $(K_{el})$ of metformin was increased by co-administration of aspirin (10, 20 mg/kg) compared with control. The terminal half-lifes $(t_{1/2})$ and mean resident time (MRT) of metformin by co-administration of aspirin (10, 20 mg/kg) were decreased significantly (p<0.05) compared with control. It is considered that the significantly decreased plasma concentration and AUC of metrormin is due to increase of elimination in urine acidified by co-administration of aspirin. The results suggest that the dosage of metformin should be adjusted when metformin is co-administered with aspirin in the clinical situation.

Behavior of Laterally Damaged Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Repaired with CFRP Laminates Under Static and Fatigue Loading

  • Many bridges are subject to lateral damage for their girders due to impact by over-height vehicles collision. In this study, the optimum configurations of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) laminates were investigated to repair the laterally damaged prestressed concrete (PS) bridge girders. Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to study the flexural behavior of 13 half-scale AASHTO type II PS girders under both static and fatigue loading. Lateral impact damage due to vehicle collision was simulated by sawing through the concrete of the bottom flange and slicing through one of the prestressing strands. The damaged concrete was repaired and CFRP systems (longitudinal soffit laminates and evenly spaced transverse U-wraps) were applied to restore the original flexural capacity and mitigate debonding of soffit CFRP longitudinal laminates. In addition to the static load tests for ten girders, three more girders were tested under fatigue loading cycles to investigate the behavior under simulated traffic conditions. Measurements of the applied load, the deflection at five different locations, strains along the cross-section height at mid-span, and multiple strains longitudinally along the bottom soffit were recorded. The study investigated and recommended the proper CFRP repair design in terms of the CFRP longitudinal layers and U-wrapping spacing to obtain flexural capacity improvement and desired failure modes for the repaired girders. Test results showed that with proper detailing, CFRP systems can be designed to restore the lost flexural capacity, sustain the fatigue load cycles, and maintain the desired failure mode.

Oil Price Fluctuations and Stock Market Movements: An Application in Oman

  • It is undisputable that crude oil and its price fluctuations are major components that affect most of the countries' economies. Recent studies have demonstrated that beside the impact that crude oil price fluctuations have on common macroeconomic indicators like gross domestic product (GDP), inflation rates, exchange rates, unemployment rate, etc., it also has a strong influence on stock markets and their performance. This relationship has been examined in a number of settings, but it is yet to be unraveled in the Omani context. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to examine the possible effect of the oil price fluctuations on stock price movements. The study applies Toda and Yamamoto's (1995) Granger non-causality test on the daily Oman stock index (Muscat Securities Market Index) and oil prices between the period of 2 January 2003 and 13 March 2016. The results indicated that the oil price fluctuations have a significant impact on stock index movements. However, the stock price movements do not have a significant impact on oil prices. These findings have significant implications not only for the Omani economy but also for the economy of similar countries, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The latter should carefully consider their policies and strategies regarding crude oil production and the generated income allocation as it might potentially affect the financial markets performance in these countries.
