While the external axial compressive load is applied to only the shell edge of stringer-stiffened shell in the most of numerical and analytical previous studies (entitled as conventional approach), a part of external load is applied to the stringers in real conditions. It leads to decrease the accuracy of the axial buckling load calculated by the conventional eigenvalue analysis approach performed in the most of previous studies. In this study, the distribution of stress in the pre-buckling analysis was enhanced by applying the axial external compressive load to both shell and stringers to perform an accurate eigenvalue analysis of the stringer-stiffened composite shell. In this regard, a model was developed in FORTRAN environment to simulate the laminated stringer-stiffened shell under axial compressive load using finite strip method. The axial buckling load of the shell was obtained through eigenvalue analysis. A comparison was made between the results obtained from the model and those available in the previous studies to evaluate the validity of the results obtained from the model. Through a parametric study, the effects of different parameters such as stringer properties and composite layup on the buckling load of the shell under different loading patterns were investigated. The results indicated that in some cases, the axial buckling load obtained for the conventional approach used in the most of previous studies is significantly overestimated or underestimated due to neglecting the stringer in distribution of external load applied to the stringer-stiffened shell. According to the results obtained from the parametric study, some graphs were derived to show the accuracy of the axial buckling load obtained from the conventional approach utilized in the literature.

The statics relation of the Stewart platform has been investigated from the viewpoint of the forward and inverse force transmission analyses. Two eigenvalue problems corresponding to the forward and inverse force transmission analyses have been formulated. The forward force transmission analysis is to determine the ranges of the magnitudes of the force and moment generated at the end-effector for the given magnitude of linear actuator forces. In reverse order, the inverse force transmission analysis is to find the range of the magnitude of actuator forces for the given ranges of the magnitudes of the force and moment at the end-effector. The inverse force transmission analysis is important since it can provide a designer with a valuable information about how to choose the linear actuators. It has been proved that two eigenvalue problems have a reciprocal relation, which implies that solving either of the eigenvalue problems may complete the forward/inverse force transmission analysis. A numerical example has been also presented.

An efficient unbalance response analysis method for rotor-bearing systems with spin speed dependent parameters is developed by utilizing a generalized modal analysis scheme. The spin speed dependent eigenvalue problem of the original system is transformed into the spin speed independent eigenvalue problem by introducing a lambda matrix, assuming the bearing dynamic coefficients are well approximated by polynomial functions of spin speed. This method features that it requires far less computational effort in unbalance response calculations and that the influence coefficients are readily available. In addition, the critical speeds and the corresponding logarithmic decrements can be readily identified from the resulting eigenvalues.

This paper describes the results of a low-frequency oscillation analysis using data measured in PMU installed in the KEPCO system, and the comparison with eigenvalues computed from the linear model. The dominant oscillation modes are estimated by applying various algorithms. The algorithms are: the extended Prony method; multiple time interval parameter estimation method; subspace system identification method; and spectral analysis. From the measurement data, modes of frequency 0.68[Hz] and 0.92[Hz] were estimated, and modes of frequency 0.63[Hz] and 0.80[Hz] were computed from the eigenvalue calculation. There was a difference between the mode estimated from measurement data and that from the linear model. This is possibly because of an error in the dynamic data of the KEPCO system used in eigenvalue calculation. Because wide area modes exist in the KEPCO system, these modes should be monitored continuously for the reliable operation of the system. In order to prevent total blackouts caused by wide area oscillation, moreover, contingency analysis should be performed in relation to this mode and appropriate measures should be established.

In the case of the non-proportionally damped system such as the soil-structure interaction system, the structural control system and composite structures, the eigenproblem with the damping matrix should be necessarily performed to obtain the exact dynamic response. However, most of the eigenvalue analysis methods such as the subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method may miss some eigenvalues in the required ones. Therefore, the eigenvalue analysis method must include a technique to check the missed eigenvalues to become the practical tools. In the case of the undamped or proportionally damped system the missed eigenvalues can easily be checked by using the well-known Sturm sequence property, while in the case of the non-proportionally damped system a checking technique has not been developed yet. In this paper, a technique of checking the missed eigenvalues for the eigenproblem with the damping matrix is proposed by applying the argument principle. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, two numerical examples are considered.

This paper presents small signal stability analysis of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farm including series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) connected at the stator side. A detailed mathematical model of wind turbine, DFIG machine and converters and SDBR is presented in this paper to derive the complete dynamic equations of the studied system. Small signal stability of this system is carried out by modal and sensitivity analysis, participation factors and eigenvalue analysis. Finally, this paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior of DFIG based wind farm under voltage dip condition with and without SDBR.

In this study, natural period formular is presented for a RC shear wall structure with H-, T-, and L-shaped wall sections. The natural period formular proposed by Goel and Chopra and adopted in ASCE 7-10 was modified by using the ratio of the flange and web wall area. The natural periods of structures with H-shaped wall were numerically obtained, the results indicated that the ASCE 7-10 could not consider the natural period variation according to the length of the flange wall, but the proposed formula could do. Especially, ASCE 7-10 estimated much longer periods than eigenvalue analysis, and this implies that conservative seismic design is difficult. The periods by eigenvalue analysis exist between the upper and lower bounds given by the proposed formula, and conservative design is possible by using the proposed lower bound value. In order to verity the effectiveness of the proposed method, actual residential buildings with various types of flange walls are considered. Ambient vibration tests, eigenvalue analyses, and nonlinear dynamic analyses were conducted and the periods were compared with the values by ASCE 7-10 and the proposed formula. The results showed that the proposed formula could estimate more accurately the periods than ASCE 7-10.

This paper presents a method to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor supported by sintered metal bearing and flexible structures by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method considering the asymmetry of the gyroscopic effect and sintered metal bearing. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are calculated by solving the eigenvalue problem and the adjoint eigenvalue problem by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The decoupled equations of motion can be obtained from global finite element motion equations by using the orthogonal relation between the right eigenvectors and left eigenvectors. The decoupled equations of motion are used to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated unbalance response with the experimental results.
A coupled method, that combines the Ritz method and the finite element (FE) method, is proposed to solve the vibration problem of rectangular thin and thick plates with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue partial differential equation(s) of the plate is (are) first reduced to a set of eigenvalue ordinary differential equations by the application of the Ritz method. The resulting eigenvalue differential equations are then reduced to an eigenvalue algebraic equation system using the finite element method. The natural boundary conditions of the plate problem including the free edge and free corner boundary conditions are also implemented in a simple and accurate manner. Various boundary conditions including simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions are considered. Comparisons with existing numerical and analytical solutions show that the proposed mixed method can produce highly accurate results for the problems considered using a small number of Ritz terms and finite elements. The proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is also compared with the mixed FE-Ritz formulation which has been recently proposed by the present author and his co-author. It is found that the proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is more efficient than the mixed FE-Ritz formulation for free vibration analysis of rectangular plates with Levy-type boundary conditions.

A new formulation of NDIF method to the algebraic eigenvalue problem is introduced to efficiently extract natural frequencies of arbitrarily shaped plates with the simply supported boundary condition. NDIF method, which was developed by the authors for the free vibration analysis of arbitrarily shaped membranes and plates, has the feature that it yields highly accurate natural frequencies compared with other analytical methods or numerical methods(FEM and BEM). However, NDIF method has the weak point that it needs the inefficient procedure of searching natural frequencies by plotting the values of the determinant of a system matrix in the frequency range of interest. A new formulation of NDIF method developed in the paper doesn't require the above inefficient procedure and natural frequencies can be efficiently obtained by solving the typical algebraic eigenvalue problem. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is shown in several case studies, which indicate that natural frequencies by the proposed method are very accurate compared to other exact, analytical, or numerical methods.
