  • A survey of the cholesterol content of eggs obtained from commercial sources in Korea was conducted. Eggs from 17 different strain birds were obtained from the Poultry Random Sample Test Station at Ansung, Kyonggi province. Yolk cholesterol contents, determined by the colorimetric procedure, were obtained from three consecutively laid eggs from birds of about 63 weeks of age. The overall mean of cholesterol value was 17.25 mg/g of wet yolk and ranged from 16.40 to 18.18 mg/g yolk. Analysis of t-test between white shell eggs and brown shell eggs showed no difference in cholesterol content: however, the white shell eggs were somewhat high in cholesterol (17.41 vs. 17.08 mg/g yolk). Significant differences (p<0.05) were found in yolk cholesterol contents among strains within the breed.

  • According to the importance(production ratio) of special brand eggs, poultry farma can be classified into four types(Types I to IV). A close relation can be observed between these types and farm scale. Special brand eggs used to be the speciality of small-scale, suburban poultry farms. Recently, however, the production of these eggs has been adopted by medium and large farms, too, and is increasing throughout Japan. In particular, small-scale farms specializing in these eggs have attained a high profit and take a characteristic management from as opposed to large-scale poultry farming that adopts the \"small profit and quick returns\" strategy. Because of this, the meaning of special brand egg production to farm management differs according to farm scale. For small poultry farmers, it means securing a high profitability and for medium and large producers, improving the corporate image or meeting the needs for assortment of retailers.

  • For the purposeof examining DDT influences to fruit-filies, Drosophila Melanogaster , authors observed the number of eggs laid and hatching rate of them treated with various concentrations of DDT. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. There was a significant difference between treated and non-treated groups in the number of eggs laid. 2. The number of eggs laid in the treated groups was gradually decreased as the DDT-concentration increases. 3. The hatching rate of the treated larvae was not significantly different from that of the non-treated , while a distinct difference between treated group and non-treated one was seen when DDT treatment was given to the adults. 4. The average number of eggs laid by a non-treated fly for 15 days was 216. The curves for the number of eggs laid in both the treated and non-treated groups for 15 days revealed almost similar patterns, although the treated groups laid the largest : number of eggs in the forth day, while in the non-treated one it is seen in the sixth day after counting eggs.

  • Standard- and large-sized eggs of Trichuris trichiura were found in the feces of schoolchildren in Yangon, Myanmar during epidemiological surveys and mass deworming with albendazole in 2017-2019. The standard-sized eggs were identified as those of T. trichiura, but it was necessary to exclude the possibility of the large-sized eggs belonging to Trichuris vulpis, a dog whipworm. We conducted morphological and molecular studies to determine the species of the 2 types of Trichuris eggs. Individual eggs of both sizes were isolated from Kato-Katz fecal smears (n=20) and mechanically destroyed using a 23G injection needle. Nuclear DNA was extracted, and the 18S rRNA region was sequenced in 15 standard-sized eggs and 15 large-sized eggs. The average size of standard-sized eggs (T. trichiura) was 55.2×26.1 ㎛ (range: 51.7-57.6×21.3-28.0 ㎛; n=97), whereas the size of large-sized eggs was 69.3×32.0 ㎛ (range: 65.1-76.4×30.1-34.5 ㎛; n=20), slightly smaller than the known size of T. vulpis. Regarding standard-sized eggs, the 18S rRNA nucleotide sequences exhibited 100% homology with T. trichiura deposited in GenBank and 88.6-90.5% homology with T. vulpis. Regarding large-sized eggs, the nucleotide sequences showed 99.8-100% homology with T. trichiura in GenBank and 89.6-90.7% homology with T. vulpis. Both standard- and large-sized eggs of Trichuris spp. found in Myanmar schoolchildren during 2017-2019 were morphologically and molecularly confirmed to belong to T. trichiura. The conversion of eggs from smaller to large sizes might be due to anthelmintic treatments with albendazole.

  • Oral application of fenoxycarb, O-ethyl N-(2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethyl) carbamate, the commercial formulation Insegar, on the 1st day of the 3rd instar made no difference in the egg laying and the hatchability as compared to 750 grains for the number of eggs laid, 53 grains for the number of the resideual eggs unlaid, 749 grains for the number of fertirized eggs, 97% for the total hatchability, and 95% for the useful hatchability as in the control but on the first day of the 4th instar, the number of the remainder eggs in the ovary increased by 2.4 folds, and reduced number of the eggs laid, number of unfertilized eggs, the hatchabillity and useful hatchability by 39%, by 66%, by 68% and by 72%, respectively. When diluted Insegar was applied topically every other two days from the pupae to the moth at concentration of 10-6, 10-7, 10-8, 10-9, 10-10 the number of eggs laid, the number of the unfertilized eggs, the total hatchability and the useful hatchability were decreased. More severe decrease took place as concentration lowered and the earlier application.

  • Going to the studies on parasite control carried out in the past. Infection rate among the rural population is contineously decreasing, however, it is still high in Korea. The most important reason for this high infectious rate is the use of manure as fertilizer. This study was aimed at finding the relationship between the infection rate and manure through analizing 83 samples of soil collected from Sa Am-Ri, Kangwon-do in June and July, 1983. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. 60 cases out of the total sample were carry in at least one or more parasitic eggs, thus revealing 72.3% of positive rate. 2. A total number of 131 parasitic eggs were detected from total sample with an average of 1.6 eggs per 10 g of soil. 3. Asearid eggs more frequently appeared than other parasitic eggs occupying 68.7% or 1.2 eggs in average per 10g of soil. 4. There was revealed positive relationship between infectious rate and frequency of use of manure. (P > 0.05). 5. Infectious rate and average number of parasitic eggs detected were less in the fertilizer mixed with manure and ash than in the soil where only manure was used. (P > 0.05).

  • The present study was carried out with the aim to evaluate the viability of layings (delivery of fertilized and unfertilized eggs) with egg laying duration of elite bivoltine races. The temporal aspect of mating in terms of egg layings duration may also have impact on the number of eggs laid, pattern of egg laying and their viability. After different interval of egg laying duration, moth of Bombyx mori are removed from oviposition site after they have completed egg laying. Present investigation confirmed that there are no significant difference in relation to the occurrence of viable (fertilized) and non viable (unfertilized) eggs and duration of oviposition. Percentage of unfertilized eggs varied from 2.41 to 3.42% in case of CSR-3, 2.59 to 3.62% in case of CSR-6, 2.82 to 3.66% in case of CSR-16 and 2.58 to 3.40% in case of CSR-17 in different treatments. The occurrence of unfertilized eggs are also not significant in the different treatments specially in those eggs which were laid 24 hours after oviposition and kept for 4 months hibernation schedule.

  • Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of the most commercially important species of farmed marine fish in Korea. Although techniques for rearing the larva of this species are improving, production costs are also increasing due to microbial influences and genetic degradation caused by successive culturing. Since the demand for healthy seed, which requires eggs of good quality of, is high, we examined the effects of nutrient composition on the size of P. olivaceus eggs. We analyzed floating (live) and sunken (dead) eggs of P. olivaceus from five different hatcheries for their size and amino and fatty acid composition. The sizes of eggs and oil globules from floating vs. sunken eggs were significantly different at p<0.05. No significant relationships were observed, however, among larval length, hatching percentage, and egg and oil globule size. The dry weight and amino acid levels of floating eggs were greater than those of sunken eggs (p<0.05), but no difference in fatty acid content was observed.

  • The purpose of our study was to determine the impact of rosemary extract in duck eggs, as determined by in vitro antioxidant capacity, lipid oxidation, fatty acid profiles, and flavor analyses. Three groups of salted duck eggs were compared: A control group and group enriched with 0.1% and 0.5% (w/v) rosemary extracts for 28 days of salting. In a time-dependent manner, the radical scavenging activity and reduction power of eggs with 0.5% (w/v) rosemary extract were significantly higher those of the control at 28 days after salting. The fatty acid profiles of salted egg were significantly affected by rosemary extract and salting time. Palmitic acid was the most abundant fatty acid in salted egg treated with rosemary extract, followed by linoleic acid and arachidonic acid. Furthermore, the treated eggs contained more docosahexaenoic acid than the control ones. And the treated eggs also have a considerable impact on the lipid oxidation process (primary and secondary oxidation). As a result, rosemary extract can be used as a natural antioxidant spice to prevent oxidation and extend the shelf life of eggs during storage. Furthermore, flavor research using solid phase microextraction - gas chromatography - mass spectrometry and an electronic nose demonstrated that adding rosemary extract to salted eggs could give them a distinct flavor.
