  • Source localization in three-dimensional (3-D) wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is becoming a major research focus. Due to the complicated air-ground environments in 3-D positioning, many of the traditional localization methods, such as received signal strength (RSS) may have relatively poor accuracy performance. Benefit from prior learning mechanisms, fingerprinting-based localization methods are less sensitive to complex conditions and can provide relatively accurate localization performance. However, fingerprinting-based methods require training data at each grid point for constructing the fingerprint database, the overhead of which is very high, particularly for 3-D localization. Also, some of measured data may be unavailable due to the interference of a complicated environment. In this paper, we propose an efficient kernel based 3-D localization algorithm via tensor completion. We first exploit the spatial correlation of the RSS data and demonstrate the low rank property of the RSS data matrix. Based on this, a new training scheme is proposed that uses tensor completion to recover the missing data of the fingerprint database. Finally, we propose a kernel based learning technique in the matching phase to improve the sensitivity and accuracy in the final source position estimation. Simulation results show that our new method can effectively eliminate the impairment caused by incomplete sensing data to improve the localization performance.

  • In many practical applications of robots, finding the location of an incoming sound is an important issue for the development of efficient human robot interface. Most sound source localization algorithms make use of only those microphones that are acoustically visible from the sound source or do not take into account the effect of sound diffraction, thereby degrading the sound source localization performance. This paper proposes a new sound source localization method that can utilize those microphones that are acoustically shadowed from the sound source. The experiment results show that use of the acoustically shadowed microphones, which receive higher signal-to-noise ratio signals than the others and are closer to the sound source, improves the performance of sound source localization.

  • Sound source localization systems in service robot applications estimate the direction of a human voice. Time delay information obtained from a few separate microphones is widely used for the estimation of the sound direction. Correlation is computed in order to calculate the time delay between two signals. In addition, PHAT weighting function can be applied to significantly improve the accuracy of the estimation. However, FFT and IFFT operations in the PHAT weighting function occupy more than half of the area of the sound source localization system. Thus efficient FFT and IFFT designs are essential for the IP implementation of sound source localization system. In this paper, we propose an efficient FFT/IFFT design method based on the characteristics of human voice.

  • A computationally efficient algorithm is presented for 3-D near-field source localization using a uniform circular away (UCA). Algebraic relations are demonstrated between the incident angles (elevation angle and azimuth angle) under the far-field assumption and the actual near-field location (range. elevation angle, and azimuth angle). Using these relations as paths to follow to the peak of the 3-D MUSIC spectrum, the proposed algorithm replaces the 3-D search required in the conventional 3-D MUSIC with a 1-D path following after a 2-D initialization. thereby reducing the computational burden.

  • There are nodes and edges in a topological map. Node data has been used as a main source of information for the localization of mobile robots. In contrast, edge data is regarded as a minor source of information, and it has been used in an intuitive and heuristic way. However, edge data also can be used as a good source of information and provide a way to use edge data efficiently. For that purpose, we define a data format which describes the shape of an edge. This format is called local generalized Voronoi graph's angle (LGA). However, the LGA is constituted of too many samples; therefore, real time localization cannot be performed. To reduce the number of samples, we propose a compression method which utilizes wavelet transformation. This method abstracts the LGA by key factors using far fewer samples than the LGA. Experiments show that the LGA accurately describes the shape of the edges and that the key factors preserve most information of the LGA while reducing the number of samples.

  • SSL (Sound Source Localization) has been applied to several applications such as man-machine interface, video conference system, smart car and so on. But in the process of sound source localization, angle estimation error is occurred mainly due to the non-linear characteristics of the sine inverse function. So an approach was proposed to decrease the effect of this non-linear characteristics, which divides the microphone's covering space into narrow regions. In this paper, we proposed an optimal space dividing way according to the pattern of microphone array. In addition, sound source's 2-dimensional position is estimated in order to evaluate the performance of this dividing method. In the experiment, GCC-PHAT (Generalized Cross Correlation PHAse Transform) method that is known to be robust with noisy environments is adopted and triangular pattern of 3 microphones and rectangular pattern of 4 microphones are tested with 100 speech data respectively. The experimental results show that triangular pattern can't estimate the correct position due to the lower space area resolution, but performance of rectangular pattern is dramatically improved with correct estimation rate of 67 %.

  • In this paper, we are proposing an efficient 3D source localization algorithm using 3 uniform linear subarrays. The proposed algorithm replaces 3D search required in conventional 3D MUSIC algorithm with 3 1D searches, and thus reduces computational burden. The estimate of the 1D conic angle obtained from a subarray under the far-field assumption satisfies a nonlinear algebraic equation of the true source bearing angle, elevation angle, and range. The proposed algorithm estimates source location by solving 3 algebraic equations obtained from 3 subarrays. Comparing 3D MUSIC spectrums of the estimated source locations, the proposed algorithm solves pairing problem for multiple sources localization.

  • Sound source localization systems in service robot applications estimate the direction of a human voice. Time delay information obtained from a few separate microphones is widely used for the estimation of the sound direction. Correlation is computed in order to calculate the time delay between two signals. Inverse cosine is used when the position of the maximum correlation value is converted to an angle. Because of nonlinear characteristic of inverse cosine, the accuracy of the computed angle is varied depending on the position of the specific sound source. In this paper, we propose an efficient sound source localization system using angle division. By the proposed approach, the region from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ is divided into three regions and we consider only one of the three regions. Thus considerable amount of computation time is saved. Also, the accuracy of the computed angle is improved since the selected region corresponds to the linear part of the inverse cosine function. By simulations, it is shown that the error of the proposed algorithm is only 31% of that of the conventional a roach.

  • Most of intelligent services provided today work based on the users' location. Numerous devices for indoor localization services have their own characteristic functions and operating systems, we need the interoperability and diversity of middleware to connect and control these devices. The indoor localization method using existing inertial sensors are relatively less efficient because of additional cost according to the size of space. Accordingly, the indoor user localization method proposed in this study supports integrated services using OSGi framework, an open source project, and solves problems in inertial sensor based on accurate distance to a specific object measured using ultrasonic sensor. Furthermore, it reduces errors resulting from difference in response rate by adding the reliability item.
