The successful use of digital textbooks (DTs) in schools requires the development of various teaching and learning methods that are appropriate for DTs. However, recent DT studies have focused mainly on the implementation of DT features and formats. The objective of this study was to investigate a problem-based learning instructional model appropriate to DTs and to present the experimental results using the problem-based DT to demonstrate its educational effectiveness. Two learning-achievements tests were conducted to analyze the learning experience and effectiveness of the problem-based DT after it had been used in a high school for a certain period. The experimental results indicated that the students who used the DT, especially lower-level students, exhibited improved problem-solving ability and demonstrated a better practical understanding of the subject than students who used printed textbooks.

This study aimed to provide basic data for enhancing the structural relationship among learning motivation, learning confidence, critical thinking skill and problem-solving ability in junior high school students and factors influencing problem-solving ability, by closely examining them. To this end, it investigated the causality among variables, for 390 junior high school students in Gangwondo, based on the outcomes of a questionnaire survey conducted to verify the effectiveness of digital textbooks. Although learning motivation did not have a significant effect on critical thinking skill, learning confidence had a direct effect on it. In addition, learning motivation, learning confidence and critical thinking skill had direct effects on problem-solving ability. In order to enhance problem-solving ability, therefore, We may be necessary to make efforts to support learning capabilities and provide opportunities for them to experience rich learning and resources.

디지털 교과서는 다양한 상호작용을 통하여 학습자의 특성과 수준에 적합한 학습을 가능하게 하는 교수학습 자료이다. 이 연구에서는 초등 과학 수업에서 디지털 교과서를 보다 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는 수업모형을 개발하고 그 효율을 확인하고자 한다. 초등 과학 수업에서 학습자들의 완결학습을 도와주기 위한 수업모형은 출발점 행동 진단과 피드백, 자기주도적 학습 환경 구축 그리고 학습자의 학습을 돕는 교사, 학생, 디지털 교과서와의 상호작용이 필요하다. 이러한 특징을 반영한 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형은 준비단계, 실행단계, 다지기단계로 구성하였다. 준비단계에서 학습자는 디지털 교과서를 이용한 진단평가 결과에 따라서 제공되는 수준별 피드백 자료를 통해 출발점 행동을 보완하고 학습 활동에 대한 흥미를 유지한다. 실행단계에서 학습자는 디지털 교과서의 다양한 기능과 여러 형태의 자료를 활용하여 자기 주도적으로 학습을 진행한다. 다지기단계에서 학습자는 교사가 구성한 다지기 영상 및 다지기 문제 풀이 활동 그리고 학습자가 커뮤니티에 누적해 놓은 결과물을 재확인함으로써 학습내용을 내면화할 수 있다. 개발한 수업모형의 효과를 확인하기 위해서 초등 과학 5학년 2학기 '날씨와 우리 생활' 단원을 선정하여 수업자료를 제작하여 초등학교 5학년 101명을 대상으로 실험을 설계하였다. 실험집단 50명에게는 개별적으로 스마트기기를 제공하여 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형을 적용한 수업을 실시하였고, 비교집단 51명은 서책형 교과서를 활용한 수업을 실시하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형을 적용한 수업은 서책형 교과서를 활용한 수업에 비해 학업 능력이 낮은 집단의 학업성취도 향상에 유의미한 효과가 있었다. 둘째, 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형을 적용한 수업은 서책형 교과서를 활용한 수업보다 학습자의 자기주도적 학습 태도 향상에 효율적이었다. 셋째, 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형을 적용한 수업에서는 서책형 교과서를 활용한 수업보다 학습자, 교사, 디지털 교과서와의 상호작용 횟수가 많았다. 결론적으로 이 연구에서 개발한 초등 과학 수업에서의 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형은 학습자의 학업성취도와 자기주도적 학습 태도를 향상시키는데 도움이 되었다.
