  • The author in an attempt to evaluate hemodynamic changes in the clinical stages of Korean hemorrhagic fever measured plasma volume, cardiac output and effective renal plasma flow utilizing radioisoto es during various phases of the disease. Cardiac output was measured by radiocardiography with external monitoring method using RIHSA. Effective renal plasma flow was obtained from blood clearance curve drawn by external monitoring after radiohippuran injection according to the method described by Razzak et al. The study was carried out in thirty-eight cases of Korean hemorrhagic fever and the following conclusions were obtained. 1. Plasma volume was increased in the patients during the oliguric-and hypertensive diuretic phases, while it was normal in the patients during the normotensive-diuretic phase. 2. Cardiac index was increased in the patients during the oliguric phase and was slightly increased in the patients at the hypertensive diuretic phase. It was normal in the other phases. 3. Total peripheral resistance was increased in the hypertensive patients during diuretic phase, while it was normal in the rest of phases. 4. Effective renal plasma flow was significantly reduced in the patients during the oliguric and diuretic phases as well as at one month after the oliguric onset. There was no significant difference between the oliguric and the early diuretic phases. Renal plasma flow in the group of patients at one month after the oliguric onset was about 45% of the normal, however, it returned to normal level at six months after the onset. 5. Clinical syndrome of relative hypervolemia was observed in some patients during the oliguric phase or hypertensive diuretic phase. Characteristic hemodynamic findings were high cardiac output and normal to relatively increased peripheral resistance in these cases. Relatively increased circulating blood volume due to decreased effective vascular space was suggested for the mechanism of relative hypervolemia. 6. Cardiac hemodynamic alteration returned to normal during late stage of the diuretic phase, while renal hemodynamic changes were normalized at six months after the onset.

  • In order to estimate a better methodological factor to understand phytoplankton ecology between abundance and bio-volume of phytoplankton, each 1,160 phytoplankton data, including abundance, classification and chlorophyll $a$ concentration were collected in Korean coastal waters of Incheon (Yellow sea), Tongyeong (South sea), and Ulsan (East sea). Based on these data, phytoplankton bio-volume can be calculated through a geometric model. The correlation coefficient between abundance and chlorophyll $a$ concentration was higher than the coefficient between biovolume and chlorophyll $a$ concentration, because a small size phytoplankton has relatively dense chlorophyll contents compared with the proportion of chlorophyll in a large size phytoplankton. Thus, the interpretation using abundance to understand phytoplankton ecology in Korean coastal waters may be more effective than that using bio-volume.

  • In this paper, we propose a stereo image recognition-based method for measuring the volume of the rectangular parallelepiped. The method measures the volume from two images captured with two CCD (charge coupled device) cameras by sequential processes such as ROI (region of interest) extraction, feature extraction, and stereo matching-based vortex recognition. The proposed method makes it possible to measure the volume of the 3D object at high speed because only a few features are used in the process of stereo matching. From experimental results, it is demonstrated that this method is very effective for measuring the volume of the rectangular parallelepiped at high speed.

  • HPFRCC (High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites), which is relatively more ductile and has the characteristic of high toughness with high fiber volume fractions, can be used in structures subjected to extreme loads and exposed to durability problems. In the case of using PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) fibers, it is noted by former studies that around 2% fiber volume fractions contributes to the most effective performance at HPFRCC. In this study, therefore, compressive and flexural tests were implemented to evaluate the compressive and flexural capacities of HPFRCC while the total fiber volume fractions was fixed at 2% and two different PVA fibers were used with variable fiber volume fractions to control the micro-crack and macro-crack with short and long fibers, respectively. Moreover, specimens reinforced with steel and PVA fiber simultaneously were also tested to estimate their behavior and finally find out the optimized mixture. In the result of these experiments, the specimen consists of 1.6% short fibers (REC 15) and 0.4% long fiber (RF4000) outperformed other specimens. When a little steel fibers added to the mixture with 2% PVA fibers, the flexural capacity was increased, however, when high steel fiber volume fractions applied, the flexural capacity was decreased.

  • The volume control method which utilize a pressure node added into a finite shell element can overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method. In this study, an improved volume control method is introduced for effective analysis of path-dependent behaviors of RC columns subjected to lateral cyclic loading or reversed cyclic loading along with compressive loading. RC shell structures and RC hollow columns are analyzed by discretizing the structures with layered shell elements and by applying in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete layers and reinforcement layers of the shell elements. The so-called path dependent volume control method as a finite element analysis technique is verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results. The validity and applicability of the modeling technique is also confirmed by the comparison.

  • A large volume of hatching jar was tested whether it is an effective to hatch fertilized eggs of Pacific cod. The volume of hatching jar did not show any significant differences in survival of the fertilized eggs; 48.3% for the jar of 15 L and 50.4% for that of 42 L. Survival rate of the fertilized eggs in a large volume of hatching jar ranged from 40.0 to 71.2%, which was higher than those of conventional small circular tank. A higher survival could be achieved even though stocking density of fertilized eggs was as high as 5,000 mL/jar. Consequently, the tested hatching jar allowed for incubation of a greater number of eggs with higher survival rate in a much smaller space. In addition, it reduces costs and manpower, and requires a relatively small amount of water per individual unit (6,700 mL/min), and provides a way to incubate multiple rearing groups in a quarantine environment.

  • Background: Surgical outcomes after orbital wall decompression have focused on the degree of exophthalmos and intraocular pressure. The aim of this research was to evaluate intraorbital volume using computed tomography (CT) images following two-wall decompression using a combined subcilliary and endoscopic approaches. Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all patients who had undergone the two-wall decompression method. The pre/postoperative CT images were used to evaluate changes in intraocular volume. Intraocular pressure was evaluated using applanation tonometry. Surgical details are discussed within the body of text. Results: Two-wall decompression thru the medial wall and floor was associated with an average intraorbital volume change of $7.3cm^3$, with maximal accommodation up to $13cm^3$. Changes in intraocular pressures were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Two-wall decompression was effective in accommodation of up to $13cm^3$ of soft tissue herniation. There was no statistically significant association between changes in volume to pressure.

  • Measuring fiber volume fraction properly is very important in designing composite materials because the fiber volume fraction mainly determines mechanical and thermal properties. Conventional Ignition methods are effective for ceramic fiber reinforcing composite materials. However, these methods are not proper for applying to carbon fiber reinforcing composites because of the venerable characteristic against oxidation of carbon fiber. In the research, fiber volume fraction of carbon fiber composites was obtained by a thermogravimetric analysis considering oxidation characteristic of the carbon fiber and the method was compared and verified with the results from microscopic cross section images.

  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for the solution of elastostatic problems in an unbounded isotropic elastic solids containing interacting multiple isotropic or anisotropic elliptical inclusions subject to remote uniaxial tension. The method is applied to two-dimensional problems involving long parallel elliptical cylindrical inclusions. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion is carried out for square and hexagonal packing of the inclusions. Effects of the number of isotropic or anisotropic elliptical inclusions and various fiber volume fractions for the circular inclusion circumscribing its respective elliptical inclusion on the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion are also investigated in detail. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are examined through comparison with results obtained from analytical and finite element methods. The method is shown to be very accurate and effective for investigating the local stresses in composites containing isotropic or anisotropic elliptical fibers.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for measuring the volume of packages for the efficient handling of the packages. Using the geometrical characteristics of the rectangular parallelepiped type objects, the method measures the volume of packages with one camera only in real time. In preprocessing of volume measurement, the method extracts outer lines of the object and then crossing points of the lines as feature points or vertexes. From these cross points(-feature points-), the volume of the package is calculated. Compared to the direct feature extraction, the proposed method shows especially the blurring robust result by using the line for feature extraction. Additionally, the method can get the stable result by considering object's direction. From experimental results, it is demonstrated that this method is very effective for the real time volume measurement of the rectangular parallelepiped.
