Quality comparison of hot-water leachate from teabags containing Citrus junos peels dried using different methods (건조방법을 달리한 유자껍질 티백차의 품질특성 비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of drying methods for Citrus junos peels on quality characteristics of the hot-water leachate from teabags containing those peels. Fresh peels were hot-air ($50^{\circ}C$), cold-air ($30^{\circ}C$), or freeze-dried ($-45^{\circ}C$), powdered to a size of 40 mesh, packaged with a paper sachet, and then the packaged teabags were leached for 10 min with hot-water ($70^{\circ}C$). $L^*$ value (lightness) and $-a^*$ value (greenness) of the peel powder were the highest in the freeze-dried samples. Soluble solids and titratable acidity of the teabag leachate were in the following order; cold-air, freeze, and hot-air dried samples. Among free sugar contents in all samples, fructose content was the highest, followed by glucose and sucrose. Fructose and glucose contents were not affected by drying methods. There was no significant difference in the flavonoid content among the peels dried using three drying methods. DPPH radical-scavenging activity of the leachate was the highest in the cold-air dried sample. These results suggest that cold-air drying would be an effective method to enhance the quality of hot-water leachate of teabags prepared from C. junos peels.

  • VMS(Variable Message Sign) helps drivers to choose their path to destinations on roadways. Some types of VMS often provide traffic information with clearly visible and comprehensible graphical route diagrams. Currently many diagramed types of VMS are installed on urban arterial and highways. This type of VMS surely enhances drivers' ability to comprehend traffic route information while they are driving on the roadway. Nevertheless, some of them are presented with so much information and design elements and they sometimes lead to decline of drivers' comprehensible level for traffic information. Drivers would fail to decide their preferable route in this state of information overflow. The purpose of this paper is to develop a drivers preference model for effective design principle including size and height of displaying font, and the amount of information in the route diagram considering driving speed, sex and age of the driver. This model is developed using structural equation modeling techniques. This model considers driver's emotional factor and, human factor and design component of route diagram. To collect data, we built driving simulator which is able to replicate real driving condition. 72 people who participated in the simulation were selected considering gender and age. The developed model showed that the amount of information, and visibility are more influential factors to the drivers' preference of the route diagram on VMS than design elements such as the shape and the font of the diagram.

A Study on the Effects of Parent Education Programs for Parents with Young and School-age Children through Meta-Analysis (메타분석을 통한 유아기와 아동기 자녀 부모 대상 부모교육 프로그램의 효과 연구)

  • This study was to analyze the general trends and the effects of parent education programs in accordance with operating methods, contents, and goals by using meta-analysis. The subjects were the studies about the effects of education programs for parents who have young and school-aged children, 41 and 15 respectively. The results showed that the trends of the operating methods in both groups did not have many differences. Also, on the contents and goals of the programs, parenting related factor was treated the most in both groups. Second, the overall effects of the parent education programs were higher on those for parents with school-aged children than parents with young children. -When parents together, not separately, participated in program, the effect size was the largest. However, the effects of other operating methods factors like number of subjects, hours per session, and number of sessions showed inconsistent results. On the effects of contents and goals, the effect of self-system competency factor as psychological characteristics was the highest in the programs for parents with young children and the effect of parenting competency factor was the highest for the ones with school-aged children. This study has implications for providing basic data for developing effective programs for parents with young and school-aged children.

The Effects of $O_2$ Partial Prewwure on Soft Magnetic Properties of Fe-Hf-O Thin Films (Fe-Hf-O계 박막에서 산소 분압 변화가 박막특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of $O_2$ partial pressure on microstructure and soft magnetic properties of as-deposited Fe-Hf-O thin film alloys, which are produced by rf magnetron sputtering method in $Ar+O_2$ mixed gas atmosphere, are investigated. Saturation magnetization ($4{\pi}M_s$) of Fe-Hf-O film were decreased with increasing $O_2$ partial pressure, the best soft magnetic properties exhibit at $O_2$ partial pressure of 10%. With further increase of $O_2$ partial pressure, soft magnetic properties decreased continuously. The $Fe_{82}Hf_{3.4}O_{14.6}$ film with $P_{O2}=10%$ exhibits good soft magnetic properties with $4{\pi}M_s=17.7kG$, $H_c=0.7Oe$ and ${\mu}_ {eff}$ (1~100 MHz)=2,500, respectively. The addition of O is effective in grain refinement. In case of $P_{O2}=15%$, it is observed that $Fe_3O_4$ compound is formed and high frequency soft magnetic properties are decrease. The electrical resistvity($\rho$) of Fe-Hf-O film is increased with increasing $O_2$ partial pressure. Electrical resistivity of $Fe_{82}Hf_{3.4}O_{14.6}$ film was 5 times higher than that of the film without oxygen. Thus, it is considered that the good magnetic properties of $Fe_{82}Hf_{3.4}O_{14.6}$ film results from decreasing the $\alpha$-Fe grain size by precipitates (Hf and O), high electrical resistivity.

  • The spinel compound was obtained by the thermal decomposition of Zn-Co and Zn-Ni gel prepared by sol-gel method using oxalic acid as a chelating agent. The formation of spinel compound has been comfirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The particle size of 13 nm~16 nm was calculated by Scherrer's equation. The sol-gel method provides a practicable and effective route for the synthesis of the spinel compound at low temperature ($350^{\circ}C$). The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponential factor (A) for each compound were found by means of the Kissinger method and Arrhenius equation. The decomposition of spinel compound has an activation energy about 155 kJ/mol. Finally, the thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^{\varphi}$, ${\Delta}H^{\varphi}$, ${\Delta}S^{\varphi}$) for decomposition of spinel compound was determined.

Increase of Downstream Minimum Flow Followed by Increase of Water Storage Size in Yudeungcheon Upstream (유등천 수원확보 규모와 하류 하천유지유량의 상관성)

  • To secure instream flow at the Yudeung urban stream reach of Daejeon city in South Korea, Yudeung upstream diversion was designed with total water storage of $59{\times}10^4m^3$, and the upstream Seongol reservoir was planned to raise the bank with various sizes. Downstream streamflows were simulated by considering outflows from upstream diversion and reservoir, and after then flow durations were analyzed and compared with flows of no reservoir condition. In case of no diversion or reservoir upstream, flow durations were $1^{st}$ flow of $84.72m^3/s$, $95^{th}$ flow of $2.10m^3/s$, $185^{th}$ flow of $0.92m^3/s$, $275^{th}$ flow of $0.42m^3/s$, and $355^{th}$ flow of $0.31m^3/s$. In case of upstream diversion, flow durations were $1^{st}$ flow of $94.38m^3/s$, $95^{th}$ flow of $2.96m^3/s$, $185^{th}$ flow of $1.22m^3/s$, $275^{th}$ flow of $0.50m^3/s$, and $355^{th}$ flow of $0.35m^3/s$. The increase flow rates were $0.04m^3/s$ in $355^{th}$ flow, $0.08m^3/s$ in $275^{th}$, and $0.30m^3/s$ in 185th. In case of Seongol reservoir with effective storage capacities of $365{\times}10^4m^3$, $544{\times}10^4m^3$, $750{\times}10^4m^3$, and $992{\times}10^4m^3$, flow durations were $85.5{\sim}83.9m^3/s$ on $1^{st}$ flow, $2.85{\sim}2.57m^3/s$ on $95^{th}$ flow, $1.16{\sim}1.27m^3/s$ on $185^{th}$ flow, $0.64{\sim}0.99m^3/s$ on $275^{th}$ flow, and $0.56{\sim}0.94m^3/s$ on $355^{th}$ flow. The increase flow rates were $0.25{\sim}0.63m^3/s$ in $355^{th}$ flow, $0.22{\sim}0.57m^3/s$ in $275^{th}$, and $0.24{\sim}0.35m^3/s$ in $185^{th}$. The more the sizes of upstream reservoirs increased, the $1^{st}$ and $95^{th}$ flows decreased in which coefficients of determination were 0.92, 0.99, respectively and the $185^{th}$, $275^{th}$, and $355^{th}$ flows increased in which coefficients of determination were 0.93 to 0.99.

Effect of rhBMP-2 produced by Escherichia coli expression system on bone formation in rat calvarial defects (백서두개골 결손부에서 Escherichia coli 발현 시스템으로 생산된 rhBMP-2의 골형성 효과)

  • Purpose: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2(rhBMP-2) has been evaluated as potential candidates for periodontal and bone regenerative therapy. In spite of good prospects in BMP applications, there is economically unavailable for clinical use in dental area. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic effect of rhBMP-2 produced by E.coli expression system. Materials and methods: Eight-mm critical-size calvarial defects were created in 48 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were divided into 6 groups of 8 animals each. Each group received one of the following: Negative control(sham-surgery control), positive control(absorbable collagen sponge(ACS) alone) and experimental(ACS loaded with rhBMP-2). Defects were evaluated by histologic and histometric parameters following 2- and 8-week healing intervals. Results: The experimental group showed significant defect closure at 2 and 8weeks than the sham surgery and positive control groups. Moreover, the experimental group showed significantly greater new bone and augmented area than the other groups at both 2 and 8weeks. Conclusion: rhBMP-2 produced by E.coli expression system may be effective for bone regeneration.

Facile Synthesis of In2S3 Modified Ag3PO4 Nanocomposites with Improved Photoelectrochemical Properties and Stabilities

  • In this work, Ag3PO4/In2S3 nanocomposites with low loading of In2S3 (5-15 wt %) are fabricated by two step chemical precipitation approach. The microstructure, composition and improved photoelectrochemical properties of the as-prepared composites are studied by X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photocurrent density, EIS and amperometric i-t curve analysis. It is found that most of In2S3 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of Ag3PO4. The as-prepared Ag3PO4/In2S3 composite (10 wt%) is selected and investigated by SEM and TEM, which exhibits special morphology consisting of lager size substrate (Ag3PO4), particles and some nanosheets (In2S3). The introduction of In2S3 is effective at improving the charge separation and transfer efficiency of Ag3PO4/In2S3, resulting in an enhancement of photoelectric behavior. The origin of the enhanced photoelectrochemical activity of the In2S3-modified Ag3PO4 may be due to the improved charge separation, photocurrent stability and oriented electrons transport pathways in environment and energy applications.

Effect on Graphene Addition on Characteristics of Polypropylene Biocomposites Reinforced with Sulfuric Acid Treated Green Algae (황산처리된 녹조류 보강 폴리프로필렌 바이오복합재료에 대한 그래핀 첨가영향)

  • To improve the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) biocomposites reinforced with sulfuric acidtreated green algae (SGA), SGA/graphite nanoplatelets (GNP)/PP biocomposites were prepared and their properties were evaluated depending on the particle size and content of GNP. The flexural and impact strength of SGA/GNP/PP biocomposites decreased with the addition of GNP, whereas the flexrual and storage moduli were greatly improved with increasing GNP loading. SGA/GNP/PP biocomposites reinforced with GNP5 showed generally better mechanical properties compared to that reinforced with GNP15 mainly due to the improved dispersion of the smaller GNP. SGA/GNP/PP biocomposites reinforced with GNP5 showed a lower resistance to the thermal expansion because the relatively uniform dispersion of smaller GNP was responsible for the effective heat transfer to the polymer matrix. As a result, SGA/GNP/PP biocomposite was acceptable for the general purpose application due to the improved flexural resistance, storage moduli, and damping characteristics.

Comparison of Gangji-hwan-1, 2, 3, 4 and Combination of Gangji-hwan-1 and Gamisoche-hwan in the Reducing Effects of Body Weight in a High Fat Diet-Fed Obese Mice (고지방식이 비만마우스 모델에서 파키스탄산 및 중국산 마황으로 조성된 강지환(降脂丸)-1, 2, 3, 4와 강지환(降脂丸)-1합가미소체환(合加味消滯丸)의 체중감량효과 비교)

  • Objectives: This study was investigated the improvement effects of Pakistani Ephedra herba-containing Gangji-hwan-1, 2, 3 (Di-fatty; DF-1, 2, 3), Chinese Ephedra herba-containing Gangjihwan-4 (DF-4) and combination of DF-1 and Gamisoche-hwan (GSH) on obesity in a high fat diet-fed obese mouse model. Methods: Eight-week-old C57BL/6N mice were divided into seven groups: a normal lean group given a standard diet, an obese control group given a high fat diet, and DF-1, 2, 3, 4, and DF-1+GSH groups given a high fat diet with DF-1, 2, 3, 4 (40, 80, 160, 80 mg/kg), and DF-1+ GSH (80 mg/kg), respectively. After 8 weeks of treatment, body weight gain, feeding efficiency ratio (FER), blood lipid markers, liver histology, and fat weight and histology were examined. Results: Body weight gain was significantly decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. The extent of decreases was eminent in DF-1+GSH group. FER and circulating concentration of leptin were decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. Circulating concentrations of triglyceride, glucose and insulin were decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. The size of adipocytes were decreased by DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control, whereas the adipocyte number per unit area was increased by them, suggesting that DF and DF-1+GSH groups decreased the number of large adipocytes. Conclusions: In conclusion, these results suggest that DF and DF-1+GSH groups decrease FER, plasma leptin concentration, blood anti-obesity biomarkers and fat mass, improves body weight gain. In addition, these effects were more effective in DF-1+GSH combination group than in DF-1, 2, 3, 4 groups.
