  • This study estimated the contribution rates of inlet air flow, moisture content, air-filled porosity and particle size on the total pressure drop for the sawdust used as the bulking agent in the composting. The statistical model for pressure drop including the affecting factors was proposed.($R^2=0.998{\sim}0.950$) While the laminar air flow(v) and particle size(SIZE*v) had the positive relations to the total pressure drop, the turbulent air flow($v^2$), moisture content(MC*v) and air-filled porosity(AFP*v) had the negative relations. Total pressure drop sharply increased with increasing of the inlet air flow. And the most significant factors affecting to total pressure drop were the particle size(SIZE*v) as positive factor and air-filled porosity(AFP*v) as negative factor. The contribution rate to total pressure drop by the particle size(SIZE*v) was continuously increased with increasing of the inlet air flow, but the contribution rate by air-filled porosity(AFP*v) was decreased. And total pressure drop was little changed even though the increasing of moisture content above the range of dry moisture content 0.25. The contribution rates of affecting factors had the different tendencies with increasing of the moisture content, especially in the negative factors as air-filled porosity(AFP*v) and moisture content(MC*v). For effective composting process, it is preferable to select the sawdust with higher air-filled porosity as bulking agent to enhance the air permeability.

  • The electrical characteristics of soils have been used for investigating soil properties. The purpose of this study is the development and application of the electrical resistivity cone probe (ERCP) for the evelation of the porosity in the field with high precision. The shape of the probe tip is a cone shape to minimize the disturbance during penetration. In addition, the four terminal pair configuration is adopted to minimize the electrical interference. The electrical resistances are continuously measured during penetration of the ERCP using penetration rigs with 0.33 mm/sec penetration rate at Incheon and Busan sites. With the measured resistance profile and electrical resisivity of electrolyte of undisturbed samples, soil porosity profiles are obtained by using Archie's law. The empirical coefficients for the Archie's law are obtained based on the electrolyte extracted from the undisturbed samples. The estimated porosity profiles show similar trends to those of in-situ penetration tests such as SPT, CPT, and DMT. This study suggests that the ERCP may be an effective tool for the porosity estimation in the field with minimum disturbance.

  • Rock physics serves as a useful tool for seismic reservoir characterization and monitoring by providing quantitative relationships between rock properties and seismic data. Rock physics models can predict effective moduli for reservoirs with different mineral components and pore fluids from well-log data. The distribution of reservoirs and fluids for the entire seismic volume can also be estimated from rock physics models. The first part of this report discusses the Voigt, Reuss, and Hashin-Shtrikman bounds for effective elastic moduli and the Gassmann fluid substitution. The second part reviews various contact models for moderate- to high-porosity sands. In the third part, constant-cement model, known to work well for the sand that gradually loses porosity with deteriorating sorting, was applied to the well-log data from an oil field in the North Sea. Lastly, the rock physics template constructed from the constant-cement model and the results from the prestack inversion of 2D seismic data were combined to predict the lithology and fluid types for the sand reservoir of this oil field.

  • The properties of contaminated soil, contaminants and elapsed time are important considering factors to in-situ soil remediation. Gabr et. al. (1996) derived the solution equation of contaminant concentration ratio as initial one ($C/C_0$) with time and spatial changes in contaminated area which are embedded with vertical drains. The contaminant concentration ratio ($C/C_0$) is analyzed with time and spatial changes as varying the effective diameter, porosity, shape factor, density of contaminated soil, temperature in ground, unit weight and viscosity of contaminants by using FLUSH1 model modified from FLUSH. Results from numerical analysis indicate that the most important factor to the in-situ soil remediation in vertical drain system is the effective diameter of contaminated soil. It also shows that the next important factors are the viscosity of contaminants, porosity of soil, shape of soil, temperature in ground, unit weight of contaminants and density of soil, in order. However, the others except the effective diameter of contaminated soil are insignificant to the soil remediation.

  • This study presents a mathematical model for simulating the fate and transport of a reactive organic contaminant, TCE, degraded by cometabolism in dual-porosity soils during the installation of in situ biobarrier. To investigate the effect of dual-porosity on transport and biodegradation of organic hydrocarbons, a bimodal approach was incorporated into the model. Modified Monod kinetics and a microcolony concept were employed to represent the effects of biodegrading microbes on the transport and biodegradation of an organic contaminant. The effect of permeability reduction in biobarrier due to biomass accumulation on the flow field were examined in the simulation of a hypothetical field-scale in situ bioaugmentation. Simulation results indicate that the presence of the immobile region can decrease the bioavailability of biodegradable contaminants and that the placement of microbes and nutrients injection wells should be considered for an effective installation of biobarrier during in situ bioaugmentation scheme.

  • The present study evaluated the mechanical properties of open graded asphalt for semi-rigid pavements in order to determine the mixing proportion experimentally. A total twelve types of basic mixing proportions were set up and mechanical tests such as marshall stability, porosity, permeability, and cantabro loss were conducted based on Korean standards. From the tests results, it was found that the marshall stability in case of straight and modified asphalt increase up to the contents with 5.0% and 5.5% respectively. The porosity and permeability of asphalt tended to decrease as the asphalt contents increase, the coefficient of correlation between both were estimated 86%. The increase contents with asphalt range from 3.5% to 6.0% tended to decrease the cantabro loss and the modified asphalt enhanced the resistance of cantabro loss with range from 18.8% to 33.1% than straight asphalt under same asphalt contents. In comparison with test results and quality standards, it was concluded that the modified asphalt content of 4.5% is effective to adopt for open graded asphalt.

  • The effects of porous wind fence on the pressure characteristics around a 2-dimensional prism model of triangular cross-section were investigated experimentally. The fence and prism model were embedded in a neutral atmospheric surface boundary layer over the city suburb. In this study, various fences of different porosity, back fence, inclination angle of prism and location of additional back prisms were tested to investigate their effects on the pressure and wall shear stress of the prism surface. The fence and prism had the same height of 40 mm and Reynolds number based on the model height was Re=3.9*10$^{4}$. The porous fence with porosity 40% was found to be the best wind fence for decreasing the mean and pressure fluctuations on the prism surface. By installing the fence of porosity 40%, the wall shear stress on the windward surface of prism was largely decreased up to 1/3 of that without the fence. This indicates that the porous fence is most effective to abate the wind erosion. Pressure fluctuations on the model surface were decreased more than half when a back fence was located behind the prism in addition to the front fence. With locating several back prisms and decreasing the inclination angle of triangular prism, the pressure fluctuations on the model surface were increased on the contrary.

  • This study was carried out to examine substrate removal characteristics with the variation of the hydraulic retention time in an anaerobic filter. The feed concentration of synthetic wastewater used in the experiment was $10,000mg/l$ glucose. As media, the porosity of volcanic stones in Jeju island were 76%. The conditions of the experiment were as follows; HRT ranging from 1 day to 3 day, loading rates ranging from 3.33kg $COD_{er}/void\;m^3.day$ to 10kg $COD_{er}/void\;m^3.day$ and a temperature $35^{\circ}C$. Based on the results of the experiments, the COD removal efficiency was 98~99% in $COD_{er}$ method with loading rates ranging from 3.33kgCOD/void $m^3.day$ to 10kg COD/void $m^3.day$ and HRT ranging from 1day to 3 day. The produced quantity of gas equivalant to a porosity volume was $1.332~3.756Nm^3/void\;m^3.day$. The relationship between $COD_{er}$ loading rates and gas produced quantity equivalant to a porosity volume was well fitted with the equation of $Nm^3/void\;m^3.day{\cdot}=0.359L_0+0.179$($L_0=COD$ loading rate). Judging from the removal efficiency in this experiment, We concluded that anaerobic filter using Volcanic stones is one of improved and effective. As media, practical value of volcanic stones is sufficient.

  • Durability performance in RC structures varies significantly with changes in cover depth and mix proportions. GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) is very effective mineral admixture and widely used for an improved resistance to chloride attack. In this paper, characteristics such as porosity, compressive strength, and diffusion coefficient are evaluated in GGBFS concrete with 30~70% of replacement ratio and $4,000{\sim}8,000cm^2/g$ of fineness. Through the tests, more dense pore structure, higher compressive strength, and lower diffusion coefficient are obtained in GGBFS concrete, which are evaluated to be more dependent on replacement ratio than fineness. With increasing curing period from 3 to 91 days, porosity decreases to 77.47% and strength increases to 373% in GGBFS concrete. Chloride diffusion coefficient in GGBFS concrete decreases to 64.4% compared with that in OPC concrete, which shows significant improvement of durability performance.
