  • In this article, the free vibration analysis of annular sandwich plates with various functionally graded (FG) porous cores and carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) facesheets is investigated based on modified couple stress theory (MCST) and first order shear deformation theories (FSDT). The annular sandwich plate is composed of two face layers and a functionally graded porous core layer which contains different porosity distributions. Various approaches such as extended mixture rule (EMR), Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka (E-M-T), and Halpin-Tsai (H-T) are used to determine the effective material properties of microcomposite circular sandwich plate. The governing equations of motion are extracted by using Hamilton's principle and FSDT. A Ritz method has been utilized to calculate the natural frequency of an annular sandwich plate. The effects of material length scale parameters, boundary conditions, aspect and inner-outer radius ratios, FG porous distributions, pore compressibility and volume fractions of CNTs are considered. The results are obtained by Ritz solutions that can be served as benchmark data to validate their numerical and analytical methods in the future work and also in solid-state physics, materials science, and micro-electro-mechanical devices.

  • Background: Thera-Band, Narrow squats, Kinesiology taping helps in the reduction of loading on the knee joints. Despite the fact that the varus knee negatively affects the alignment of the lower extremities, most of the studies have analyzed each independently. Objectives: To investigate the effects of a complex exercise program consisting of elastic band exercises and squat exercises on the distance between the inner knees and balance in young adults with genu varum. Design: A cluster randomized controlled trial. Methods: The complex exercise group performed resistance exercises using an elastic band. The taping group used kinesiology tape on the vastus lateralis and biceps femoris. To select those to be included in the study, we measured the distance between the knees using digital Vernier calipers and to measure the balance ability, we used a balance training system. The data were analyzed with the independent t-test and paired t-test. Results: The study indicated a significant difference in the distance between the knees between the two groups, but no significant differences in the dynamic balance between the groups. Also, the static balance comparison between the groups according to the intervention method included the trace length, C90 area, C90 angle and velocity. There were no significant differences in the static balance between the groups. In addition, the complex exercise program was more effective than taping. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that the complex exercise program and taping decrease the between both the knee and increase the balance.

  • A graph is a data structure consisting of nodes and edges between these nodes. Graph embedding is to generate a low dimensional vector for a given graph that best represents the characteristics of the graph. Recently, there have been studies on graph embedding, especially using deep learning techniques. However, until now, most deep learning-based graph embedding techniques have focused on unweighted graphs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a graph embedding technique for weighted graphs based on long short-term memory (LSTM) autoencoders. Given weighted graphs, we traverse each graph to extract node-weight sequences from the graph. Each node-weight sequence represents a path in the graph consisting of nodes and the weights between these nodes. We then train an LSTM autoencoder on the extracted node-weight sequences and encode each nodeweight sequence into a fixed-length vector using the trained LSTM autoencoder. Finally, for each graph, we collect the encoding vectors obtained from the graph and combine them to generate the final embedding vector for the graph. These embedding vectors can be used to classify weighted graphs or to search for similar weighted graphs. The experiments on synthetic and real datasets show that the proposed method is effective in measuring the similarity between weighted graphs.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is the preferred technique for treating early gastric cancer (EGC). However, very few studies have been conducted in South America. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ESD for EGC. Methods: We analyzed data from a prospective cohort from 2013 to 2020. A total of 152 superficial gastric neoplasms that fulfilled the absolute or expanded criteria for ESD were included. Outcomes were en bloc, R0, and curative resection rates, incidence of adverse events, and length of procedure. Results: The age of the enrolled patients was 68.4±11.3 years. The number of included patients based on the absolute and expanded indications was 150 and 2, respectively. En bloc, R0, and curative resections were achieved in 98.0%, 96.1%, and 89.5% of the cases, respectively. Bleeding and perforation were reported in 5.9% and 6.6% of the cases, respectively. Histopathological examination revealed low-grade dysplasia, high-grade dysplasia, well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, and poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in 13, 20, 117, and 2 cases, respectively. Conclusions: Our study shows that ESD performed by properly trained endoscopists in reference centers is safe and effective, with comparable therapeutic outcomes to those reported in the Eastern series.

  • Supersonic aircraft and missiles often encounter damage issues due to high-speed collisions with small objects such as ice particles and water droplets. This can significantly impact the safety and performance of these vehicles, making the assessment and development of collision testing crucial. Existing collision testing methods have relied on equipment such as gas guns, which utilize high pressure. However, most accelerators for projectiles are large-scale devices designed for weaponry and high-pressure gases, rendering them inaccessible and unsuitable for laboratory use. Therefore, there is a need for research into easily accessible and economically efficient testing devices at the laboratory level. An impact tester can launch a projectile with a velocity of 100 m/s using low-pressure compressed air at approximately 10 bar. The velocity of the impact tester projectile is determined by the pressure within the chamber, friction, and the length of the barrel. In this study, computational fluid dynamics was utilized to define friction coefficients that match experimental results based on projectile weight, enabling accurate prediction of velocity. The resulting data provides practical and effective insights for the design of impact testers, utilizing the defined friction coefficients to understand and predict complex physical phenomena.

  • A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the effect of ice pack application to post cardiac surgery toddlers before C-tube removal. Twenty toddlers aged 13 months to 24 months, who were admitted to the hospital for open heart surgery during the period from July, 1993 to October, 1993 were randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. An ice pack was applied to the C-tube insertion site for 8 minutes before C-tube removal for the experimental group. The children were videotaped during the procedure to assess pain behavior and crying time. The score on the Modified Behavioral Pain Scale(MBPS), crying time, and vital signs were measured to determine the effect of ice pack application. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test, Paired t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The result of the study are as follows : 1. There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in pain behavior (U=17.0, p=.01). 2. There was no significant difference between the two groups in crying time. 3. There was a significant difference between the two groups in heart rate (U=24.5, p=.05). 4. There was a significant difference between the two groups in systolic blood pressure (U=24.0, p=.05) 5. There was a significant difference between the two groups in diastolic blood pressure (U=23.0, p=.04). 6. There was no significant difference between the two groups in respiration rate. 7. Pain behavior was significantly correlated with heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and crying time (r=.50, .54 and .59, p<.05). The result showed that the ice pack application was effective to reduce pain related to C-tube removal for the toddlers. From the study, it is recommended that the effectiveness of the cold ap-plication to children undergoing different painful procedures be examined to determine the most effective length of cold application to reduce pain in children.

  • A significant drag reduction in the turbulent flow of CWM(coal Water Mixture) adding minute amounts of high molecular weight polymer additives has been obtained and it was compared with pure CWM.However, the rate of drag reduction could come down with flow time, which is caused by polymer degradation, The rate of drag reduction and polymer degradation is affected by polymer type, concentration, molecular weight, and flow velocity. In the present investigation, these important parameters were evaluated for their influences on polymer degradation in order to find out stable conditions for CWM transportation with time. It was necessary to determine the more effective type of polymer additives to guarantee the optimum conditions for CWM transport. Experiments were undertaken with a test section of pipe diameter 9.8mm and pipe length 3500mm(L/D=357) in a closed loop, and polyacrylamide and polyetylene oxide were utilized as polymer additives. The tests were carried out under the conditions of 200, 400, 700ppm of polymer concentrations. CWM concentrations utilized were 5% and 10% with flow velocities of 4.9m/s and 6.1m/s. Experimental data show that polyehylene oxide degraded faster than polyacrylamide in CWM transport, and polyacryamide is considered to be a more effective candidate as additive for long time-CWM transport. Polymer degradation is also found to be more likely at lower polymer concentrations, at higher flow velocities, and higher CWM concentrations.
