We use the first-passage-time formulation by Torquato, Kim and Cule [J. Appl. Phys., Vol. 85, pp. 1560∼1571 (1999) ], which makes use of the first-passage region in association with the diffusion tracer's Brownian movement, and develop a new efficient Brownian motion simulation method to compute the effective conductivity of digitized composite media. By using the new method, one can remarkably enhance the speed of the Brownian walkers sampling the medium and thus reduce the computation time. In the new method, we specifically choose the first-passage regions such that they coincide with two, four, or eight digitizing units according to the dimensionality of the composite medium and the local configurations around the Brownian walkers. We first obtain explicit solutions for the relevant first-passage-time equations in two-and three-dimensions. We then apply the new method to solve the illustrative benchmark problem of estimating the effective conductivities of the checkerboard-shaped composite media. for both periodic and random configurations. Simulation results show that the new method can reduce the computation time about by an order of magnitude.

An attempt has been made in this study to evaluate an applicability of Relative Effective Porosity Model (REPM) as a method for estimating saturated hydraulic conductivity (K$_{s}$) for homogeneous coarse, medium, and fine sands. The saturated hydraulic conductivities obtained from REPM are converted into average linear velocities using Darcy's Law and compared with the results from experimental tracer tests for homogeneous coarse, medium, and fine sand layer. Two types of tracer tests analyses, analytical solution using CXTFIT and moment methods, are performed to obtain reasonable linear velocity range for each layer. For the coarse and medium sands, the converted average linear velocity from REPM is in the velocity range obtained from tracer tests. However, small difference between the results from REPM and tracer tests is found for the fine sands. These results show that REPM gives reasonable estimates of saturated hydraulic conductivity.y.
A semi-closed loop ground heat exchanger is proposed and its performance is compared through the measuring the effective thermal conductivity of the ground. In-situ tests based on the line source model are carried out to evaluate the thermal characteristics of each ground heat exchanger which has different penetration water flow rate. The test results show the increasing effective thermal conductivity of ground as the penetration water flow rate(PWFR) is increased. Therefore, the higher thermal performance of the proposed semi-closed ground heat exchanger can be expected.
In this study, thickness, density and effective thermal conductivity of frost forming on the horizontal cylinder were measured with various air temperature and humidity. Reynolds number and temperature of cooling surface are controlled 17300 and $-l5^{\circ}C$ respectively. In each case of air temperature $5^{\circ}C,\;10^{\circ}C,\;15^{\circ}C,$ varying absolute humidity, experiments were executed. In measuring frost surface temperature and thickness of frost layer, infrared thermocouples and CCD camera were used. Frost was gathered from cylinder to measure mass of frost layer. Experimental data showed that the thickness and effective thermal conductivity of the frost layer increase with respect to time. Thickness of frost layer increase with humidity increasing, and density of frost layer increase with air temperature rising. Frost growth with air temperature and density of frost layer with humidity are affected by whether dew point is below or above freezing point.
The main idea behind the paper is to present two alternative methods of homogenization of the heat conduction problem in composite materials, where the heat conductivity coefficients are assumed to be random variables. These two methods are the Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) technique and the second order perturbation second probabilistic moment method, with its computational implementation known as the Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM). From the mathematical point of view, the deterministic homogenization method, being extended to probabilistic spaces, is based on the effective modules approach. Numerical results obtained in the paper allow to compare MCS against the SFEM and, on the other hand, to verify the sensitivity of effective heat conductivity probabilistic moments to the reinforcement ratio. These computational studies are provided in the range of up to fourth order probabilistic moments of effective conductivity coefficient and compared with probabilistic characteristics of the Voigt-Reuss bounds.

Cylindrical stainless-steel/sodium heat pipe for a high-temperature solar thermal application was manufactured and tested for transient and steady-state operations. Two layers of stainless-steel screen mesh wick was inserted as a capillary structure. The outer diameter of the heat pipe was 12.7 mm and the total length was 250 mm. The effective heat transport length, the thermal load, and the operating temperature were varied as thermal transport conditions of the heat pipe. The thermal load was supplied by an electric furnace up to 1kW and the cooling was performed by forced convection of air The effective thermal conductivity and the thermal resistance were investigated as a function of heat flux, heat transport length, and vapor temperature. Typical range of the total effective thermal conductivity was as low as 43,500 W/m K for heat flux of 176.4 kW/$m^2$ and of operating temperature of 1000 K.
In this paper, a copper foil-thick grapheme (thin graphite sheet)-copper foil structure is reported to achieve mechanically strong and high thermal conductive layer suitable for heat spreading components. Since graphene provides much higher thermal conductivity than copper, thick graphene embedded copper layer can achieve higher effective thermal conductivity which is proportional to graphene/copper thickness ratio. Since copper is nonreactive with carbon material which is graphene, chromium is used as adhesion layer to achieve copper-thick graphene-copper bonding for graphene embedded copper layer. Both sides of thick graphene were coated with chromium as an adhesion layer followed by copper by sputtering. The copper foil was bonded to sputtered copper layer on thick graphene. Angstrom's method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of fabricated copper-thick graphene-copper structure. The thermal conductivity of the copper-thick graphene-copper structures is measured as $686W/m{\cdot}K$ which is 1.6 times higher than thermal conductivity of pure copper.
Particularly in research related to seawater intrusion the change of fluid electrical conductivity is one of major concerns, and effective monitoring can help to optimize a water pumping performance in coastal areas. Special considerations should be given to the mounting of sensors at proper depth during the monitoring design since the vertical distribution of fluid electrical conductivity is sensitive to the characteristics of seawater intrusion zone. This tells us the multi-channel electrical conductivity monitoring is of paramount consequence. It, however, is a rare event when this approach becomes routinely available in that commonly used commercial stand-alone type sensors are very expensive and inadequate for a long term monitoring of electrical conductivity or water level due to their restricted storage and difficulty of real-time control. For this reason, we have developed a real-time monitoring system that could meet these requirements. This system is user friendly, cost-effective, and easy to control measurement parameters - sampling interval, acquisition range, and others. And this devised system has been utilized for the electrical conductivity monitoring in boreholes, Yeonggwang-gun, Korea. Monitoring has been consecutively executed for 24 hours, and the responses of electrical conductivity at some channels have been regularly increased or decreased while pumping up water. It, with well logging data implemented before/after pumping water, verifies that electrical conductivity changes in the specified depths originate from fluid movements through sand layer or permeable fractured rock. Eventually, the multi-channel electrical conductivity monitoring system makes an effective key to secure groundwater resources in coastal areas.
Four heat conduction models were examined for defatted soy-protein curds in order to get the 'intrinsic' thermal conductivity of soy-protein. As the result of examination, the 'intrinsic', thermal conductivities of soy-protein, frozen and unfrozen states, were determined on the basis of series model to be 0.488 W/m.K and 0.300 W/m.K, respectively. By using the 'intrinsic' thermal conductivity values of soybean protein and the series model, the effective thermal conductivity of soybean curds, with and without fat, at frozen and unfrozen states, was predicted satisfactorily, The temperature dependency of the effective thermal conductivity of soybean curd was mostly observed to correlate with the thermal conductivity of water and ice.
Estimating the thermal conductivity of clayey soils is important for enhancing the performance of geoengineering structures in cold regions and clay barriers for nuclear waste repositories, but specimen disturbance, saturation, and heat boundary conditions of the test apparatus hinder reliable measurements of the thermal conductivity of saturated clayey soils. This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out using modified consolidation tests with the needle probe method to measure thermal conductivity. Experimental consolidation tests with saturated kaolinite were performed to investigate the effect of effective stress and dry density on thermal conductivity for saturated kaolinite. In addition, thermal conductivity of soil particles were thoroughly investigated and experimental results were used to evaluate the accuracy of the models to predict thermal conductivity.
