  • A numerical study was conducted to have the effect of $CO_2$ addition to fuel on the chemical reaction mechanism with the change of the initial concentration of $CO_2$ and the axial velocity gradient. From this study, it was found that there were two serious effects of $CO_2$ addition on a non-premixed flame ; a diluent effect by the reactive species reduction and chemical effect of the breakdown of $CO_2$ by the third-body collision and thermal dissociation. Especially, the chemical effect was serious at the lower velocity gradient of the axial flow. It was certain that the mole fraction profile of $CO_2$ was deflected and CO was increased with the initial concentration of $CO_2$. It was also ascertained that the breakdown of $CO_2$ would cause the increasing of CO mole fraction at the reaction region. It was also found that the addition of $CO_2$ did not alter the basic skeleton of $H_2-O_2$ reaction mechanism, but contributed to the formation and destruction of hydrocarbon products such as HCO. The conversion of CO was also suppressed and $CO_2$ played a role of a dilution in the reaction zone at the higher axial velocity gradient.

  • In Taiwan, an efficient approach for enhancing the stability of colluvium slopes is the drilled shaft method. For slopes with drilled shafts, the soil arching effect is one of the primary factors influencing slope stability and intertwines to the failure mechanism of the pile-soil system. In this study, the contribution of soil arching effect to slope stability is evaluated using the FEM software (Plaxis 3D) with the built-in strength reduction technique. The result indicates the depth of the failure surface is influenced by the S/D ratio (the distance to the diameter of piles), which can reflect the contribution of the soil arching effect to soil stability. When α (rock inclination angles)=β (slope angles) is considered and the S/D ratio=4, the failure surface of the slope is not significantly influenced by the piles. Overall, the soil arching effect is more significant on α=β, especially for the steep slopes. Additionally, the soil arching effect has been included in the proposed stability charts. The proposed charts were validated through two case studies, including that of the well-known Woo-Wan-Chai field in Taiwan. The differences in safety factor (FoS) values between the referenced literature and this study was approximately 4.9%.

  • The effects of ouabain and diphenylhydantoin on ATPase activity in rat erythrocyte membranes were studied and also influence of K on ATPase activity was studied. The ATPase activity of rat erythrocyte membrane has been shown to consist of two components. The first component requires the Mg but occurs in the absence of Na or K (Mg-ATPase) and is not inhibited by ouabain and stimulated by diphenylhydantoin. The second component requires the presence of Mg and also Na or K (Na-K-Mg-ATPase). It is inhibited by ouabain and is stimulated by diphenylhydantoin in low Na concentration and inhibited in high Na concentration. K inhibit Na-K-Mg-ATPase which is inhibited by ouabain. Ouabain and diphenylhydantoin show reversed effect to Na-K-Mg-ATPase activity. It suggest that the therapeutic effect of diphenylhydantoin on digitalis induced cardiac arrhythmia may be resulted from their effect on ion transport mechanism of cell membrance. And the relevance of these findings to the action of ouabain and diphenylhydantoin on membrane transport mechanism is discussed.

  • In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of antinociceptive effect and thermoregulatory action of capsaicin in guinea pigs. The administration of capsaicin (5 mg/kg, s.c.) caused a significant decrease in frequency of eye wiping, an indicative of nociceptive threshold. This antinociceptive effect of calsaicin was abolished by co-administration of capsazepine (30 mg/kg, s.c.) with capsaicin, suggesting the involvement of a vanilloid receptor in the antinociceptive action of capsaicin. The administration of capsaicin (1 mg/kg, s.c.) produced a significant decrease in body temperature of guinea pigs. The maximum decrease in body temperature by 2 degrees was shown 1 hour after the treatment, and this decrease was not reversed by coadministration of capsazepine. In conclusion, it is suggested that the mechanism of action of capsaicin-induced thermoregulation involves different pathways from that of capsaicin-induced antinociception.

  • Mechanism of rapid mixing effect on chemical phosphorus removal is evaluated in this study. Assuming that chemical phosphorus removal is unaffected by mixing time, only rapid mixing intensity is evaluated. In order to find out the mechanism, it is hypothesized that rapid mixing affects the Al hydrolysis speciation, and that formation of more monomeric species ($Al^a$) results in better removal of phosphorus. According to a ferron assay, more $Al^a$ formed at higher mixing intensity than at lower intensity. Subsequent experiments revealed that better phosphorus removal was obtained at higher intensity than at lower intensity, in terms of the molar ratio of $Al_{added}/P_{removed}$. The proposed hypothesis was proved in this study. Chemical phosphorus removal is affected by rapid mixing intensity due to its effect on the Al hydrolysis speciation.

  • Data obtained from a cruise from 4~12 December, 1998 was analyzed to estimate the mixing effects of wind, surface cooling, and tide. A band denoting a mixing area with a temperature difference of less than 1$^{\circ}C$ between the sea surface and the bottom extended 40~60 km from the coast into the open sea, following 125$^{\circ}$ 30\` E in longitude. This band was divided into two areas; a well-mixed area close to the coast and a stratified region in the open sea. The mixing effect due to the wind was only 2%, yet the mixing effect due to the tides was about 68%. This indicates that surface cooling and tides were the major factors involved in the mixing mechanism on the west coast during the cooling season.

  • In this work, we have investigated the effect of polyoxyethylene alkyl ester nonionic surfactants on percutaneous permeation enhancement of a model drug, ketoprofen. We also investigated the mechanism involved in the enhancement using impedance and solubility measurement. Three groups of nonionic surfactants with different ethylene oxide content were studied. The permeation results showed that all surfactants enhanced the percutaneous absorption, irrespective of the molecular weight. The permeation results from PEG-45 monostearate (PEGMS45) were rather unexpected. Impedance and solubility results indicate that the mechanism involved in the enhancement of permeation by PEG-10 monooleate (PEGMO10) and PEGMS45 is rather different. The results from PEGMS45 suggest that it could be a potential candidate as a skin penetration enhancer with high molecular weight, which may poses less skin irritation and systemic side effect than the smaller surfactant molecules. Overall, this work provided some useful information on percutaneous transport enhancement and the mechanistic insights involved in skin permeation for these nonionic surfactants.

  • UV laser ablation of polyimide is a combination of photochemical and photothermal mechanism. Photochemical mechanism is that molecular bonds are broken by photon energy and photothermal is evaporation and melt expulsion. When the laser processing, the etching depth needs to be calculated for prediction of processing result. In this paper, in order to predict the laser etching depth of polyimide by UV laser with the wavelength of 355nm, the theoretical model which includes both the photothermal and the photochemical effect was introduced. The model parameters were obtained by comparing with experimental results. The 3rd harmonic $Nd:YVO_4$ laser system was used in the experiment. From these experimental and theoretical results, the laser ablation of a polyimide was verified to achieve the highest quality microstructure.

  • Complementary and alternative medicines are considered as a promising research field to develop new therapies for various allergic diseases. In this study, we investigated the anti-allergic effect of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb (AP) by using passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in mice and its mechanism of action in mast cells. The extract of AP reversibly inhibited degranulation in RBL-2H3 cells and bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs). AP also suppressed the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis inducing by IgE and antigen (Ag) in a dose-dependent manner. In the study to find its mechanism of action, AP inhibited the phosphorylation of Syk kinase, a pivotal protein which is regulated by Src-family kinase for activation of mast cells. In addition, AP also suppressed activation of Akt and Erk1/2 that are critical for the production of cytokines in mast cells. The results strongly suggest that AP exerts anti-allergic activity in vitro and in vivo through the inhibition of activation of Syk in mast cells.

  • According to former studies, the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete filled tubular steel (RCFT) columns differed greatly from that of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns because of interaction of inserted reinforcement in RCFT. Employing an experiment-based verification policy, a general FE nonlinear analysis model was developed to analyze the mechanical behavior and failure mechanism of RCFT columns under uniaxial compression. The reasonable stress-strain relationships were suggested for confined concrete, reinforcements and steel tube in the model. The mechanism for shear failure of concrete core was found out in the numerical simulation, and a none-conventional method and equation for evaluating the confinement effect of RCFT were proposed.
