  • This study is aimed to systematize the contents of environmental education in the home education and to develop the environmental education. For this, this study firstly examined the characteristics and goals of home education and its relation to environmental education. Secondly, in the paradigm of environmental education this study analyzed the goals and contents of environmental education in the domain of home education which is included in the practicum subject of the 7th curriculum. Thirdly, this study examined the effective teaching and learning methods for home education and the considerations in organization of textbook contents which reflect these teaching and learning methods. Finally, this study suggested an example of textbooks which reflect all these considerations. It has been found out that: (1) the home education is based on the recognition of environmental problems related to home life, (2) the home education explains the environmental problems, and (3) the home education has its goals of acquring active attitudes and skills to solve these problems. In the teaching contents, the home education was analyzed to have the following concerning environmental education: the utilization of resources for food, clothes, and housing and home life, that is, the domain of ‘environmental sanitation’ related to food ingestion and sanitary life, the domain of ‘sound consumption life’ related to the utilization of resources and their consumption, and the domain of ‘environmental pollution’ on the prevention of every kind of pollutants in the home life. However, the environmental education in the home education according to the 7th educational curriculum has the distinctiveness from the contents of environmental education which were emphasized in the past home education. The distinctiveness are as following: (1)the resources matter is dealt with in the aspect of recycling various resouces from home life, (2)the prevention or reduction of pollutants in life which take the considerable part of environmental pollution is emphasized, (3)children's sensitivity In environment is emphasized to be developed, and (4)the importance of life is emphasized to be taught.

  • The goal of this paper is to develop a regional environmental education program using a regional environment of dam, and to set up a regional education for sustainable development with applying that program to the students. This environmental education program is based on Hungerford's project, which consists of 4 subjects. They are good and bad influences of dam environment which students can experience easily in daily life. Through the volunteering activities such as discussion, search and observation, pre- and post-test, study of value, presentation and game, students can decide which is a favorable strategy for preserving dam facilities well. And they are encouraged to take part in environmental preservation and practice what they learn everyday in the community. The following are the outcomes of this environmental education program: First, students are much more interested in regional and general environmental problems than before and participate in conservation activities voluntarily. Second, students express their willingness for the prevention of water pollution in Hapcheon Dam by collecting garbages and reducing synthetic detergent. Third, students demand some measures which connect the school program to citizen groups for the prevention of water pollution in Hapcheon Dam.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the housewives's recognition and practice on prevention of environmental pollution. The subjects of this study were 250 housewives, school students' mothers, living in Cheong-ju. Major findings were as follows: 1. In washing their faces and brushing their teeth, they saved the water very well, but in taking bath, washing the dished, using the water of the lavatory they did not save the water so well. 2. The kinds of the cleansers differed in taking a bath, washing the hair, and doing the laundry respectively : what they use most was hard soaps in taking bath, liquid cleansers mixed with shampoo and linse in washing the hair, and synthetic powder detergent in laundrying. They used more synthetic detergent than natural soaps, which is known to be a cause of water pollution. Especially, when they cleansed, they did not use a measuring cup. It resulted in the waste of detergent and accelerating of water pollution. Therefore, the environmental education for them was very urgently needed. 3. In handling domestic waste, the separate collection rate of empty bottles and old newspapers was very high, but that of used phone-call cards and used batteries was extremely low. It was truly nessesary to educate and step up publicic activities on the separate collection of phone-call cards and batteries caused environmental pollution. 4. The housewives had much knowledge about environmental pollution, but they did not practice it so well in their home. 5. The housewives made more effort than their children in preventing environmental pollution and saving resources. In conclusion, what is most important for solving environmental problem was for each citizen to make an effort to prevent environmental pollution, and the government's support and producing the atmosphere of the society for this was really needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of environmental impact assessment(EIA) and to suggest new EIA technology. The problems of EIA in Korea can be summarized as follows. First, the EIA does not reflect the impact of policy, plan and program on environment. Second, the project EIA does not consider the cumulative impacts such as additive impacts, synergistic impacts, threshold/saturation impacts, induced and indirect impacts, time-crowded impacts, and space-crowded impacts. Third, the EIA techniques in Korea are not standardized. Finally, the present EIA suggests only alternatives to reduce adverse impacts. To solve above-mentioned problems, the development of new EIA technology is essential. First, the new EIA technology should be developed toward pollution prevention technology and comprehensive and integrated environmental management technology. Second, new fields of EIA for pollution prevention contain strategic environmental assessment, cumulative impacts assessment, socio-economic impact assessment, cyber EIA and EIA technology necessary after the reunification of Korean Peninsula. Third, EIA technology for integrated environmental management contains the development of integated environment assessment system and the development of packaged EIA technology. The EIA technology for integrated environmental assessment system contains (1) development of integrated impact assessment technology combining air/water quality model, GIS and remote sensing, (2) integrated impact assessment of EIA, traffic impact assessment, population impact assessment and disaster impact assessment. (3) development of integrated technology combining risk assessment and EIA (4) development of integrated technology of life cycle assessment and EIA, (5) development of integrated technology of spatial planning and EIA, (6) EIA technology for biodiversity towards sustainable development, (7) mathematical model and GIS based location decision techniques, and (8) environmental monitoring and audit. Furthermore, there are some fields which need packaged EIA technology. In case of dam development, urban or industrial complex development, tourist development, landfill or combustion facilities construction, electric power plant development, development of port, road/rail/air port, is necessary the standardized and packaged EIA technology which considers the common characteristics of the same kind of development project.

  • While the threat from traditional communicable diseases have been decreasing non communicable chronic diseases are increasing due to the aging of population and change in life pattern of the people such as over intake of cholesterol and lack of physical exercise etc. On the other hand, since 1980s, AIDS is spreading rapidly throughout the globe and environmental pollution, accidents, addictive diseases such as drug abuse and alcoholism are becoming serious factors to hinder the health promotion of the people. In order to improve general public health and promote individual health status, existing program for communicable disease control by the government such as tuberculosis, leprosy, STD and acute communicable diseases should be effectively continued. In principle, effort should be placed on eradication of source of infection, reduction of communicability of source in infection, treatment of source of infection as well as increase of individual registance to the diseases through immunization and improvement of physical status. Since the pattern of illness is being shifted from communicable diseases to non communicable chronic diseases such as cancer, cerebral hemorrhage, heart disease and hypertention etc., special emphasis should be placed on the prevention and control of those adult diseases. Early detection of the patients, registration and treatment of patients and health education should be systematically developed for effective control of the diseases. In addition, program activities on MCH, nutrition, dentistry, mental health, environmental health, accident prevention. medical delivery system, health insurance. and all other health issues should be improved in order to achieve our goal of health promotion.
