Spore Diversity of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in a Post-mining Area in Korea (폐광산 지역의 근권 토양에 분포하는 수지상균근균 포자의 다양성)

  • In this study, we investigated the spore diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in rhizospheres of a post-mining area and a natural forest area in Jecheon, Korea. The rhizospheres of the post-mining areas were dominated by Acaulospora mellea, while those of the natural forest area were dominated by Ambispora leptoticha. The number of AMF spores in rhizospheres of the post-mining area was significantly higher than that in the rhizospheres of the natural forest area. Although the diversity index of each area showed no significant difference, the community similarity of AMF within the rhizospheres of natural forest area was significantly higher than that observed within those of post-mining area. These results showed that AM fungal communities in rhizospheres could change because of the degree of disturbance.

An Analysis of Previous Researches on Universal Design in Korea (국내 유니버설 디자인 선행 연구 동향 분석)

  • Currently in Korea, Researches on universal design have been actively accomplished in various fields as not only housing and public space, but also product design and education. The purpose of this study is to analyze previous researches on universal design and to identify its research trends which might suggest the future directions of the related studies. In this study, researches on universal design were analyzed to classify the types according to research area, objects and respondents. Two hundreds twenty one papers(journal articles, theses, dissertations, etc.) which were published in Korea from 1997 to 2008 were analyzed. The results were as follows. Researches on universal design have increased quantitatively and research topics have been diverse. In the 1990s, with the introduction of universal design concept, research area focused on space design, but since 2000 researches on universal design have been expanded to apply the fashion, product design and education. In terms of research objects, the studies about evaluation and case analysis have conducted more than those about principles and planning design. With regard to research respondent, the studies for the elderly or people with disabilities and those of all people including a specific target have conducted in a similar ratio. Previous studies were contributed to expand the topics of universal design and it is time to study the applications based on previous research results for utilization and dissemination of universal design. Also it is necessary to conduct interdisciplinary studies in the field of universal design.

Teaching the Derivation of Area Formulas for Polygonal Regions through Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO): A Visual Reasoning Approach

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986). A Study on the Courtesy Education for Middle School Students (중학생의 예절교육에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the desirable method of courtesy education for middle school students. The major research questions of this study are to identify and test the follows: 1) The influence of the environment (grade, sex, the educational background of father, the educational background of mother, the scale of family, the presence of grandfather, the presence of grandmother, students’age ranking among their brothers and sisters, religion, academie record) on the middle school students’ knowledge and attitude on courtesy. 2) The influence of the courtesy education on students’knowledge and attitudes on courtesy. 3) The degree of change on their knowledge and attitudes after courtesy education. The response were given by 485 middle school students and their mothers in Wanju county Chonbuk province. Frequences, Percentages, Means and Standard Deviations were calculated, T-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficients were used for data analysis. The result of this study are as follows, 1. The influence of environment: 1) Higher grade students gained more score of courtesy test than lower grade ones. 2) Female students gained more score than male students. 3) The students who had higher academic record gained more score of courtesy test than any other students. 2. The influence of courtesy education: Most of educated groups changed significantly due to courtesy education. It showed that courtesy education contributed to improve their knowledge and attitudes on courtesy. 3. After courtesy education: On the one hand, the most changed attitude was bow-courtesy area and then good-manners area, conversation-courtesy area, etc. On the other hand, the basic spirit area on courtesy changed less than any other areas. It means that long-term courtesy education should be done in order to change students’ attitudes on courtesy basically, even though they could improve their knowledge and attitudes externally in a short time.

Using Calculators in Mathematics Education in Koran Elementary Schools

  • Mathematics subject of the seventh national curriculum in Korea, which has been effective since 2000, strongly encourages the use of calculators and computers to help children gain a better understanding of basic mathematical concepts and develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills without spending too much time and effort on making mechanical computations. Despite the recommendation by the national curriculum, however, only a small segment of elementary school teachers have been using calculators because of the fear that children\\`s dependence on calculators might bring about negative consequences. As a result, little research has been conducted in this area as well. This study has been conducted on the assumption that calculators have the potential for being a useful instructional tool in certain areas of elementary school mathematics education. To investigate the usefulness of calculators, a review was made of the scanty literature in the area. The literature review indicated that calculators are effective when they are used for the following purposes: understanding concepts and properties in numbers and operations, deducing mathematical rules, and solving problems. In view of the available research finding, we will give some concrete learning and teaching models of such uses of calculators. The teaching-learning models are organized around three categories: concept formation, discovery of principles and rules, and problem solving. Such organization is intended to help teachers use the models with ease.

Analysis of Elementary Science Area in Southern Arizona Science Engineering Fair (미국 남아리조나 지역 과학.기술 전람회의 국민학교 부문 분석)

  • The 40th Annual Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair was analyzed in terms of contents of exhibits and research methods. Elementary school students like to choose first, biology; secondly. physics; thirdly, chemistry; fourthly. consumer science; fifthly, S.T.S; sixthly. earth science area topics. Chemistry area topics are 20 %, which are much more than rates appeared in American elementary science textbooks. Elementary school students like topics such as pollutions, energy saving materials and characteristics/selection of products required in every-day life. In the most preferential area, biology, students do experiments or survey about plants growth, microbiology, learning/behavior of animals, health/exercise, which are reconcile with the analysis of American elementary science contents.

An Analysis on Research Trends in Korean Language Education: Focusing on Quantitative Research Methods (한국어교육 연구방법론에 대한 동향분석 -양적연구를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to classify research methods used in Korean language education studies with a focus on identifying how and what quantitative research methods are utilized in these studies. Analyzing articles published in the Journal of Korean Language Education from 2005 to 2016, we found a trend that as a replacement for secondary research, primary research played a more prominent role after 2010, as the number of quantitative studies and studies using mixed methods increased. We also found that within quantitative studies of Korean language education, research themes and statistical analyses became diversified after 2010. In order for quantitative research to contribute continuously to Korean language education, the quality of research has to improve. In particular, quantitative researchers in this area should: (a) increase their general understanding of statistical methods, (b) conduct "power analysis" to determine the appropriate sample size for hypothesis testing, and (c) be aware of measurement issues such as measurement equivalence and DIF when measuring latent psychological constructs. It is also important to notice that these points above should be considered carefully in the planning and designing stage for researchers.

Environmental Risk Perception and Perceived Benefit Among Residents and Workers in Industrial Area (공단 지역주민과 근로자의 환경위해도 인식과 인지된 편익)

  • This study is to estimate differences, relationships and related factors of environmental risk perception and perceived benefit among residents and workers. A self-administered questionnaire survey using a structured instrument was carried out to residents and workers in industrial area during April, 2002. Total number of participants were 657 including 329 residents and 328 workers. Participants assessed environmental risk perception, self- assessed knowledge, trust in authorities and perceived benefit associated with 10 products manufactured in industrial area. There were difference in environmental risk perception, knowledge and trust in authorities and perceived benefit among residents and workers. Especially, trust in authorities and perceived benefit were statistically significant difference among residents and workers. Inverse relationships between environmental risk perception and perceived benefit have been observed for different products. In other words, the greater the perceived benefit, the lower the perceived risk, and vice versa. Factors mostly associated with participant's characteristics of environmental risk perception were age. marriage status (workers), education level (workers). There was statistically significant difference. Perceived benefit was statistically significant difference with sex, marriage status, residence duration, education level (workers). Related factors of environmental risk perception among residents and workers were age, trust in authorities. And factors affecting the perceived benefit were sex, age, education level (workers), and trust in authorities (workers). According to the results, people having high trust in the authorities perceived less risks than people having low in the authorities. To improve the communication of risk information, further study focus on assessment of experts, government and stakeholder in industrial area. Methodologies of this study can be used as the basis for investigating the structure of public perception of environmental products risks and benefit, designing a public information and risk communication program, and developing policy actions to improve acceptance.

A Study of Philosophical Basis of Preconceptions and Relationship Between Misconceptions and Science Education (선입관(先入觀)의 철학적(哲學的) 배경(背景) 및 오인(誤認)과 과학학습(科學學習)의 관계(關係))

  • Since the study of student's preconceptions and their effects on the learning of relevant subjects became an influential research area with high significance, the research area bas mainly been concerned by science educators. However, it was not until the year of 1983 that the area received recognition of various fields other than science education. The recognition was given by the Scientific American when it published a paper reporting a misconceptions in mechanics. Studies concerning misconceptions primarily interested in the following questions: What kinds of theoretical bases do preconceptions or misconceptions have? What are the sources of those conceptions? How are the misconceptions changed into or improved to scientific concepts? What are the efficient teaching methods appropriate for reducing the number of the misconceptions after instruction? Those questions are partly answered by experimental psychology and by philosophy of science, especially epistemology. Therefore, the paper will examine the theoretical background for and the sources of the misconceptions through literature review. Then, a few learning and teaching theories currently carrying great prestige in educational practice will be interpreted in terms of the knowledge of preconceptions or misconceptions.

Development of Algorithm and Programming Framework for Information Education Curriculum Standard Model (정보과 교육과정 표준모델을 위한 알고리즘 및 프로그래밍 영역 프레임워크 개발)

  • We developed a framework of consisting of concept understanding and learning activities in the area of algorithm and programming for constructing SW curriculum that can be used in school field. Based on this, it is composed of five levels of achievement standards by area. The algorithm area consists of 18 achievement standards elements, and the programming area consists of 21 elements. To examine the importance of content about achievement standards and the appropriateness of the education time of each area, its validity was suggested through expert verification by delphi survey. The present study could be utilized as the research data of the standard model of information education curriculum and provides important implications for the development of SW curriculum in the school field.
