It is not always convenient to consider isotropic meshes where the edge length depends on the orientation of the edge. It is desirable to go for anisotropic mesh strategy instead. There are many instances where the solution shows directional features such as great variations along certain directions with less significant changes along other ones. Anisotropic meshes considered to be worthy in these cases. By using anisotropic elements we can resolve the solution accurately with few elements. Many techniques have been used as a common feature that the shape, size and orientation of the triangle elements are controlled by specifying metric tensor. This paper attempts at clear understanding of the estimation and equidistribution of the error and discusses the parameters like reliability and effectivity of an anisotropic mesh in a mathematical manner. Also we study some of applications of anisotropic mesh.

A segment matching algorithm in stereo vision via the fusion of multiple features on long edge segments is proposed. One problem of the previous segment matching algorithm is the similarity among the segments caused from its short length. In the proposed algorithm, edges are composed of longer segments which are obtained by breaking the edges only at the locations with distinguished changes of the shape. Such long segments can contain extra features such as curvature ratio and length of segments which could not be included in shorter ones. Use of such additional features enhances the matching accuracy significantly To fuse multiple features for matching, weighting value determination algorithm which is computed according to the degree of the contribution of each factor is proposed. The stereo matching simulations with the proposed algorithm are done about various images and their results are included.

This paper presents an efficient block segmentation and classification using the edge information of the document image. We extract four prominent features form the edge gradient and orientaton, all of which, and thereby the block clssifications, are insensitive to the background noise and the brightness variation of of the image. Using these four features, we can efficiently classify a document image into the seven categrories of blocks of small-size letters, large-size letters, tables, equations, flow-charts, graphs, and photographs, the first five of which are text blocks which are character-recognizable, and the last two are non-character blocks. By introducing the clumn interval and text line intervals of the document in the determination of th erun length of CRLA (constrained run length algorithm), we can obtain an efficient block segmentation with reduced memory size. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can rigidly segment and classify the blocks of the documents into the above mentioned seven categories and classification performance is high enough for all the categories except for the graphs with too much variations.
The propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate (${ \sigma}$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edges can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Preliminary results are presented for single and twin premixed hydrocarbon edge-flames in terms of the effects on $U_{edge}$. A low-${\sigma}$ extinction limit has been discovered for all mixtures tested but further analysis is necessary for full characterization since sufficiently $high-{\sigma}$ leads to an apparent stability limit. Propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le. Future work will focus on completing the premixed hydrocarbon edge-flame analysis and include investigations into non-premixed edge-flames and edge-flames composed of fuels such as hydrogen ($H_2$) with significantly lower Le.
This study examines the forming properties and forming loads needed to increase the edge thickness on the external face of a plate using finite element analysis(FEA). Recently, forming optimization techniques within FEA are being extensively used in designing the optimal forming conditions for processes like forging, extrusion, rolling, and spinning. Most of these existing forming operations involve reducing the volume per unit length, but research for increasing volume per unit length is not very extensive. For this study we chose an automotive engine flywheel which is a welded assembly of a plate and a gear with each component having a different thickness. We considered a forming technique to increase the thickness in order to allow the machining of the gear directly on the external face of plate alleviating the need for a weld. To study various forming techniques, we used the finite element method with the flow stress of material and incremental forming steps. We conclude from this study that the analysis of forming properties and forming loads by using the finite element analysis and testing is useful as a method to increase the thickness per unit length.

Experiments in methane-air low strain rate counterflow diffusion flames diluted with nitrogen have been conducted to study the behavior of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiative heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. Critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined with velocity ratio and global strain rate. Onset conditions of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes are also provided with global strain rate and added nitrogen mole fraction to fuel stream (fuel Lewis number). It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this affects flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Edge flame oscillations in low strain rate flames are experimentally described well and are categorized into three: a growing oscillation mode, a decaying oscillation mode, and a harmonic oscillation mode. The regime of flame oscillation is also provided at low strain rate flames. Important contribution of lateral heat loss even to edge flame oscillation is clarified

The modified Canny edge detection algorithm that can detect the boundary between screen door and platform in the subway is proposed in this paper. Generally, in the subway, the boundary line between the platform and the screen door is darker than the surrounding area. Therefore, an edge image is using the modified bottom-hat transform by considering its characteristics. Double thresholded images with strong edge and weak edge through double thresholding are obtained. An algorithm that detects the boundary invasion between the platform and the screen door is proposed by calculating the length by applying the Hough transform to the double thresholded image and comparing the boundary line length between when there is an object such as a person and when there is no object. In this paper, the results of the proposed modified Canny edge detection algorithm using two different input images according to camera height position are shown by computer simulation.
Edge detection is the first step and very important step in image analysis. We cast edge detection as a problem in cost minimization. This is achieved by the formulation of a cost function that evaluates the quality of edge configurations. The cost function can be used as a basis for comparing the performances of different detectors. This cost function is made of desirable characteristics of edges such as thickness, continuity, length, region dissimilarity. And we use a simulated annealing algorithm for minimum of cost function. Simulated annealing are a class of adaptive search techniques that have been intensively studied in recent years. We present five strategies for generating candidate states. Experimental results(building image and test image) which verify the usefulness of our simulated annealing approach to edge detection are better than other operator.

The dynamic behaviors of counterflow non-premixed flame have been investigated experimentally to study effects of heat losses on edge flame oscillation, which result from the advancing and retreating edge flame motion of outer flame edge at low strain rate flame. For low strain rate flame, lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiation heat loss could be more remarkable than the others. Oscillatory instabilities appear at fuel Lewis number greater than unity. But excessive lateral conduction heat loss causes edge flame instability even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. The dramatic change of burner diameters in which flame length is an indicator of lateral conduction heat loss was applied to examine the onset condition of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes. Especially, extinction behaviors quite different from the previous study were observed.

In this study, composite laminate cantilever type cylindrical shells with edge-stiffeners are analyzed. A versatile 4-node flat shell element which is useful for the analysis of shell structures is used. An improved flat shell element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming displacement modes and the substitute shear strain fields. Two models by load conditions are considered. Load type A and B are loaded by point load at the free edge and line load respectively. A various parameter examples are presented to obtain proper stiffened length and stiffened thickness of edge-stiffeners. It is shown that the thickness of shell can be reduced minimum 30% by appropriate edge-stiffeners.
