  • It is useful to simulate the human visual function for the purpose of image-processing. In this study, the hardware of the spatial filter with the sensitivity of lateral inhibition is realized by the combination of optical parts with electronic circuits. The diffused film with the characteristics of Gaussian type is prepared as a spatial filter. An object's image is convoluted with the spatial filter. From the difference of the convoluted images, the zero-cross position is detected at video rate. The edge of object is extracted in real-time by the use of this equipment. The resolution of edge changes with the value of the standard deviation of diffused film. In addition, it is possible to extract a directional edge selectively when the spatial filter with directional selectivity is used instead of Gaussian type of spatial filter.

  • The stereoscopic vision system is the algorithm to obtain the depth of target object of stereo vision image. This paper presents an efficient disparity matching method using blue edge filter and graph cut algorithm. We do recommend the use of the simple sobel edge operator. The application of B band sobel edge operator over image demonstrates result with somewhat noisy (distinct border). The basic technique is to construct a specialized graph for the energy function to be minimized such that the minimum cut on the graph also minimizes the energy (either globally or locally). This method has the advantage of saving a lot of data. We propose a preprocessing effective stereo matching method based on sobel algorithm which uses blue edge information and the graph cut, we could obtain effective depth map.

  • As the essential techniques for the CD (Critical Dimension) measurement of the LCD pattern, there are various modules such as an optics design, auto-focus [1-4], and precise edge detection. Since the operation of image enhancement to improve the CD measurement repeatability, a ring type of the reflected lighting optics is devised. It has a simpler structure than the transmission light optics, but it delivers the same output. The edge detection is the most essential function of the CD measurements. The CD measurement is a vital inspection for LCDs [5-6] and semiconductors [7-8] to improve the production yield rate, there are numbers of techniques to measure the CD. So in this study, a new subpixel algorithm is developed through facet modeling, which complements the previous sub-pixel edge detection algorithm. Currently this CD measurement system is being used in LCD manufacturing systems for repeatability of less than 30 nm.

  • This paper is concerned with an analysis of a surface edge crack emanated from a sharp contact edge. For a geometrical model, a square wedge is in contact with a half plane whose materials are identical, and a surface perpendicular crack initiated from the contact edge exists in the half plane. To analyze this crack problem, it is necessary to evaluate the stress field on the crack line which are induced by the contact tractions and pseudo-dislocations that simulate the crack, using the Bueckner principle. In this Part I, the stress filed in the half plane due to the contact is re-summarized using an asymptotic analysis method, which has been published before by the author. Further focus is given to the stress field in the half plane due to a pseudo-edge dislocation, which will provide a stress solution due to a crack (i.e. a continuous distribution of edge dislocations) later, using the Burgers vector. Essential result of the present work is the corrective functions which modify the stress field of an infinite domain to apply for the present one which has free surfaces, and thus the infiniteness is no longer preserved. Numerical methods and coordinate normalization are used, which was developed for an edge crack problem, using the Gauss-Jacobi integration formula. The convergence of the corrective functions are investigated here. Features of the corrective functions and their application to a crack problem will be given in Part II.

  • UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) photogrammetry has recently emerged as a means of obtaining highly precise and rapid spatial information due to its cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. However, current procedures or regulations for quantitative quality verification methods and certification processes for UAV-images are insufficient. In addition, the current verification method for image quality is not evaluated by an MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) analysis or edge response analysis, which can analyze the degree of contrast including image resolution, and only relies on the GSD (Ground Sample Distance) analysis. Therefore, in this study, the edge response analysis using a Slanted edge target was performed along with GSD analysis to confirm the necessity of analyzing edge response analysis in UAV-images quality analysis. Furthermore, a Matlab GUI-based software tool was developed to help streamline the edge response analysis. As a result, we confirmed the need for edge response analysis since the outputs of the edge response analysis from the same GSD had significantly different outcomes. Additionally, we found that the quality of the edge response analysis of UAV-images is proportional to the performance of the camera mounted on the UAV.

  • The purpose of this paper is two-fold: 1) A novel algorithm in order to extract lane-related information from road images is presented; 2) Design specifications of an image processing onboard unit capable of extracting lanerelated information in real-time is also presented. Obtaining precise information from road images requires many features due to the effects of noise that eventually leads to long processing time. By exploiting a FPGA and DSP, we solve the problem of real-time processing. Due to the fact that image processing of road images relies largely on edge features, the FPGA is adopted in the hardware design. The schematic configuration of the FPGA is optimized in order to perform 3 $\times$ 3 Sobel edge extraction. The DSP carries out high-level image processing of recognition, decision, estimation, etc. The proposed algorithm uses edge features to define an Edge Distribution Function (EDF), which is a histogram of edge magnitude with respect to the edge orientation angle. The EDF enables the edge-related information and lane-related to be connected. The performance of the proposed system is verified through the extraction of lane-related information. The experimental results show the robustness of the proposed algorithm and a processing speed of more than 25 frames per second, which is considered quite successful.

  • We propose a novel algorithm capable of recognizing the road lane by image processing. Considering the fact that the direction and location of road lane are maintained similarly in successive images we formulate a function to represent the property. However, as noises play the role of making a lot of similar patterns appear and disappear in the road image, keeping of robustness in the lane detection has been known a difficult work. To overcome this problem, we introduce the following three ideas: 1) design of a function based on an edge direction and magnitude, 2) construction of a recursive filter to estimate the function recursively for successive images, 3) principal axis-based line fitting. These concepts enhance the adaptability to cope with the random environment of traffic scene and eventually lead to the reliable detection of a road lane.

  • Let G(V, E) be a simple graph, and let f be an integer function on V with $1{\leq}f(v){\leq}d(v)$ to each vertex $v{\in}V$. An f-edge cover-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of edge set E such that each color appears at each vertex $v{\in}V$ at least f(v) times. The f-edge cover chromatic index of G, denoted by ${\chi}'_{fc}(G)$, is the maximum number of colors such that an f-edge cover-coloring of G exists. Any simple graph G has an f-edge cover chromatic index equal to ${\delta}_f\;or\;{\delta}_f-1,\;where\;{\delta}_f{=}^{min}_{v{\in}V}\{\lfloor\frac{d(v)}{f(v)}\rfloor\}$. Let G be a connected and not complete graph with ${\chi}'_{fc}(G)={\delta}_f-1$, if for each $u,\;v{\in}V\;and\;e=uv{\nin}E$, we have ${\chi}'_{fc}(G+e)>{\chi}'_{fc}(G)$, then G is called an f-edge covered critical graph. In this paper, some properties on f-edge covered critical graph are discussed. It is proved that if G is an f-edge covered critical graph, then for each $u,\;v{\in}V\;and\;e=uv{\nin}E$ there exists $w{\in}\{u,v\}\;with\;d(w)\leq{\delta}_f(f(w)+1)-2$ such that w is adjacent to at least $d(w)-{\delta}_f+1$ vertices which are all ${\delta}_f-vertex$ in G.

  • As a pre processing for an edge detection process. edge preserving smoothing algorithm is proposed. For this purpose we used the interpolation method using B-spline basis function and scaling of digital images. By approximation of continuous function from descrete data using B-spline basis function. undetermined data between two sample can be computed. so that they smooth the surfaces of objects. Some edges having mainly low frequency components are detected using down scaling of the images. Edge maps from proposed pre processed images are hardly affected by the varying space constants($\sigma$) and threshold values used in detecting zero-crossing.

  • Forest ecosystem is considered as an important stepping stone to minimize the impact of climate change. However, the rapid urbanization has caused fragmentation of forest ecosystem. The fragmentation of forest patch results in edge effect which brings about adverse impacts on forest function and structure. Degradation of forest ecosystem decreases carbon sequestration because edge effect reduces productivity. Therefore, we analyzed the impact of forest edge effect on forest ecosystem carbon stock change in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. We used connectivity analysis to determine forest edge and core area. The field study sites were selected with considering forest age, density, class and soil type. Secondly, forest carbon stock was calculated with allometric equation. The soil carbon stock was derived from Walkely-Black method. Lastly, Mann-Whitney test was conducted to validate differences between carbon stock in edge and core area. As a result of study, the connectivity analysis was effective to determine forest edge and core. The core and edge of forest patch showed different composition of tree species and soil properties. Carbon stock per tree in the edge area was lower than that in the core area. However, the difference of soil organic carbon content between the edge and core were relatively small. This assessment can be applied for the conservation of forest patch as well as quantitative assessment on the forest carbon stock change caused by fragmentation.
