  • Edge detection is one of the important technologies to simplify images in the text, lane and object recognition implementation process, and various studies are actively carried out at home and abroad. Existing edge detection methods include a method to detect edge by applying directional gradient masks in spatial space, and a mathematical morphology-based edge detection method. These existing detection methods show insufficient edge detection results in excessively dark or bright images. In this regard, to complement these drawbacks, we proposed an algorithm using the Sobel and histogram equalization among the existing methods.

  • Text region detection from a natural scene is useful in many applications such as vehicle license plate recognition. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a text region extraction method using pattern histogram of character-edge maps. We create 16 kinds of edge maps from the extracted edges and then, we create the 8 kinds of edge maps which compound 16 kinds of edge maps, and have a character feature. We extract a candidate of text regions using the 8 kinds of character-edge maps. The verification about candidate of text region used pattern histogram of character-edge maps and structural features of text region. Experimental results show that the proposed method extracts a text regions composed of complex background, various font sizes and font colors effectively.

  • In this paper, the extraction method of the edge histogram directly using wavelet coefficients in the wavelet domain for JPEG2000 images is proposed. MPEG-7 Edge Histogram Descriptor(EHD) extracts edge histogram in the spacial domain. This algorithm has much multiplication and addition for the edge extraction because it needs the decoding processing. However because the proposed algorithm extracts the edge histogram in the wavelet domain, it doesn't need the decoding processing and it decreases multiplication and addition. The Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) is a standard transform in JPEG2000. The proposed algorithm uses Le Gall 5/3 filter in JPEG2000 and odd coefficients in LH2 and HL2 sub-band. The edge direction can be decided to use rate of HL2 and LH2 odd coefficients. According to experiments, there is no difference of the efficiency between EHD and the proposed algorithm And the proposed algorithm is much better than EHD for multiplication and addition in the edge extraction of images.

  • The study is an image-based assessment that uses image processing techniques to determine the condition of concrete with surface cracks. The preparations of the dataset include resizing and image filtering to ensure statistical homogeneity and noise reduction. The image dataset is then segmented, making it more suited for extracting important features and easier to evaluate. The image is transformed into grayscale which removes the hue and saturation but retains the luminance. To create a clean edge map, the edge detection process is utilized to extract the major edge features of the image. The Otsu method is used to minimize intraclass variation between black and white pixels. Additionally, the median filter was employed to reduce noise while keeping the borders of the image. Image processing techniques are used to enhance the significant features of the concrete image, especially the defects. In this study, the tonal zones of the histogram and its properties are used to analyze the condition of the concrete. By examining the histogram, the viewer will be able to determine the information on the image through the number of pixels associated and each tonal characteristic on a graph. The features of the five tonal zones of the histogram which implies the qualities of the concrete image may be evaluated based on the quality of the contrast, brightness, highlights, shadow spikes, or the condition of the shadow region that corresponds to the foreground.

  • In this paper, we propose an edge histogram to efficiently represent the edge distribution in the image for MPEG-7. To this end, we adopt global, semi-global, and local edge histogram bins. Also, we extract the edge information from the image in terms of image blocks rather than pixels, which reduces the extraction complexity and is also applicable to the block-based compression standards such as MPEG-1, and 2. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields better retrieval accuracy and feature extraction speed comparing to other non-homogeneous texture descriptors of MPEG-7 including the wavelet-based descriptor and local edge-based descriptor.

  • In this paper, a ship detection method is proposed; this method uses edge-based segmentation and histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) with the ship size ratio. The proposed method can prevent a marine collision accident by detecting ships at close range. Furthermore, unlike radar, the method can detect ships that have small size and absorb radio waves because it involves the use of a vision-based system. This system performs three operations. First, the foreground is separated from the background and candidates are detected using Sobel edge detection and morphological operations in the edge-based segmentation part. Second, features are extracted by employing HOG descriptors with the ship size ratio from the detected candidate. Finally, a support vector machine (SVM) verifies whether the candidates are ships. The performance of these methods is demonstrated by comparing their results with the results of other segmentation methods using eight-fold cross validation for the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a technique for drowsiness detection using the histogram and edge information of eyes. The drowsiness of vehicle drivers is the main cause of many vehicle accidents. Therefore, the checking of eye images in order to detect the drowsiness status of a driver is very important for preventing accidents. In our suggested method, we analyze the changes of the histograms and edges of eye region images, which are acquired using a CCD camera. The experimental results show that our proposed method enhances the accuracy of detecting drowsiness to nearly 99%, and can be used for preventing vehicle accidents caused by the driver's drowsiness.

  • We propose efficient video retrieval scheme which use fast key frame extraction in DCT domain. Our scheme extract key frame using the edge histogram difference which is extracted in compressed domain for I-frames. And the video retrieval is implemented using Hausdorff distance function about edge histogram of key frame. This approach enables fast content-based video retrieval of the compressed video content without decompression process. Experimental results show our scheme is very fast and efficient.

  • An image fidelity assessment using the edge histogram descriptor (EHD) of MPEG-7 is presented. Neither additional data nor fragile watermarking is needed, and there is no need to access the original image as a reference. Only the EHDs of the original image and the received image are required. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) obtained by comparing the EHD extracted from the received image and that of the original image is used to assess the noise level of the received image. Experimental results show that the PSNRs calculated from the conventional pixel-to-pixel gray level and from the proposed bin-to-bin EHD maintain a proportional relationship. This implies that the EHD can be used instead of image data for the image fidelity assessments.
