Extraction of Car License Plate Region Using Histogram Features of Edge Direction (에지 영상의 방향성분 히스토그램 특징을 이용한 자동차 번호판 영역 추출)

  • In this paper, we propose a feature vector and its applying method which can be utilized for the extraction of the car license plate region. The proposed feature vector is extracted from direction code histogram of edge direction of gradient vector of image. The feature vector extracted is forwarded to the MLP classifier which identifies character and garbage and then the recognition of the numeral and the location of the license plate region are performed. The experimental results show that the proposed methods are properly applied to the identification of character and garbage, the rough location of license plate, and the recognition of numeral in license plate region.

A Study on the Image Processing of Visual Sensor for Weld Seam Tracking in GMA Welding

  • In this study, a preview-sensing visual sensor system is constructed far weld seam tracking in GMA welding. The visual sensor system consists of a CCD camera, a diode laser system with a cylindrical lens, and a band-pass-filter to overcome the degrading of image due to spatters and/or arc light. Among the image processing methods, Hough transform method is compared with the central difference method from a viewpoint of the capability for extracting the accurate feature position. As a result, it was revealed that Hough transform method can more accurately extract the feature positions and it can be applied to real time weld seam tracking. Image processing which includes Hough transform method is carried out to extract straight lines that express laser stripe. After extracting the lines, weld joint position and edge points are determined by intersecting the lines. Even though the image includes a spatter trace on it, it is possible to recognize the position of weld joint. Weld seam tracking was precisely implemented with adopting Hough transform method, and it is possible to track the weld seam in the case of offset angle is in the region of $\pm$ $15^{\circ}$.

  • A vanishing point is a point on an image to which parallel lines projected from a real space gather. A vanishing point in a road space provides important spatial information. It is possible to improve the position of an extracted lane or generate a depth map image using a vanishing point in the road space. In this paper, we propose a method of detecting vanishing points on images taken from a vehicle's point of view using Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HoG). The proposed algorithm is divided into a HoG feature extraction step, in which the edge direction is extracted by dividing an image into blocks, a DNN learning step, and a test step. In the learning stage, learning is performed using 2,300 road images taken from a vehicle's point of views. In the test phase, the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using the Normalized Euclidean Distance (NormDist) method is measured.

  • The 3D infrared image enhancement with Stereoscopic algorithm on still infrared image is presented. The adapted stereoscopic method is that the depth is extracted by comparison with right-left image, and the enhanced 3D infrared image by matching based on feature is realized. As the result of experiment this method forces a 3D infrared image by the edge lines to be more smooth.

  • This paper presents a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) of an indoor hallway environment using Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) along with a line segment as a landmark. Based on the fact that fluent line features can be extracted around the ceiling and side walls of hallway using vision sensor, a horizontal line segment is extracted from an edge image using Hough transform and is also tracked continuously by an optical flow method. A successive observation of a line segment gives initial state of the line in 3D space. For data association, registered feature and observed feature are matched in image space through a degree of overlap, an orientation of line, and a distance between two lines. Experiments show that a compact environmental map can be constructed with small number of horizontal line features in real-time.

Improve Stability of Military Infrared Image and Implement Zynq SoC (군사용 적외선 영상의 안정화 성능 개선 및 Zynq SoC 구현)

  • Military camera equipment has a problem that observability is inferior due to various shaking factors. In this paper, we propose an image stabilization algorithm considering performance and execution time to solve this problem and implemented it in Zynq SoC. We stabilized both the simple shaking in the fixed observation position and the sudden shaking in the moving observation position. The feature of the input image is extracted by the Sobel edge algorithm, the subblock with the large edge data is selected, and the motion vector, which is the compensation reference, is calculated through template matching using the 3-step search algorithm of the region of interest. In addition, the proposed algorithm can distinguish the shaking caused by the simple shaking and the movement by using the Kalman filter, and the stabilized image can be obtained by minimizing the loss of image information. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, experiments on various images were performed. In comparison, PSNR is improved in the range of 2.6725~3.1629 (dB) and image loss is reduced from 41% to 15%. On the other hand, we implemented the hardware-software integrated design using HLS of Xilinx SDSoC tool and confirmed that it operates at 32 fps on the Zynq board, and realized SoC that operates with real-time processing.

  • Digital image blur occurs due to various environmental conditions at the time of shooting. Blur produces the low-frequency component in the image. This problem worsens the quality of the digital image. To address this issue, contrast improvement methods has been widely studied. 2D filter to enhance the edges is a simple structure with a fast processing speed. However, the sensitivity of the human visual system is different depending on the surrounding brightness locally. Thus, in this paper, we proposed feature-based contrast enhancement method for the digital image using 2D filter to enhance the edges and JND(Just Noticeable Difference) according to the surrounding brightness. We confirmed the result image of proposed method and identified that the contrast is improved.

  • In the transmitting process of image signal processing system, there are several different causes of degradation that have been occuring. The main cause of degradation is attributed to the noise. The most representive method of removing noise of image, which is caused by impulse noise environment, is using the SM filter. At edge, the filter has a special feature which has a tendency to decrease. As a result, we proposed a nonlinear filter using the form of mask and the probability of the impulse noise to restore the image considering edge quality in the impulse noise environment. And through the simulation, we compared with the existings and capabilities.

  • Ant Colony System(ACS) is easily applicable to the traveling salesman problem(TSP) and it has demonstrated good performance on TSP. Recently, ACS has been emerged as the useful tool for the pattern recognition, feature extraction, and edge detection. The edge detection is wifely utilized in the area of document analysis, character recognition, and face recognition. However, the conventional operator-based edge detection approaches require additional postprocessing steps for the application. In the present study, in order to overcome this shortcoming, we have proposed the new ACS-based edge detection algorithm. The experimental results indicate that this proposed algorithm has the excellent performance in terms of robustness and flexibility.
