Effects of the Application of Lower Extremities Exercise and Elastic Compression Stockings on Edema and Pain of Lower Extremities in Nurses (하지운동과 탄력압력스타킹 적용이 일종합병원 간호사의 하지부종과 하지통증에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the application of elastic compression stockings and lower extremities exercise on edema and pain of lower extremities in hospital nurses. The participants were 30 hospital nurses working at a general hospital. The participants were categorized into three groups such as, 10 for an experimental group of the application of the elastic compression stocking, 10 for another experimental group of the application of Lower extremities exercise and 10 for a control group. Edema of the lower extremities were measured in terms of the girths of ankles and calves. And pain of the lower extremities were measured in terms of the score by NRS(Numerical Rating Scale). The data were analyzed with Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Standard Deviation, ${\chi}^2$-test and ANOVA to identify the participants' characteristics, SPSS Win 21.0 program was used for analysing. There are significant differences in lower extremity edema among the experimental group of lower extremities exercise, experimental group of elastic compression stocking and control group was supported(Rt Calf F=0.645, p=.000, Lt Calf F=21.941, p=.000). There are significant differences in lower extremity pain the experimental group of lower extremities exercise, experimental group of elastic compression stocking and control group was supported(Rt: F==7.320, p=.000 Lt: F=10.623, p=.000). In conclusion, in has been appeared that the lower extremities exercise and wearing elastic compression stocking have effedted in relieving low extremity edema and pain scale for nurses.

Effects of the use of elastic compression stockings among dental hygienists (치과위생사의 탄력압박스타킹 착용 효과)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to characterize edema of the lower extremities that occurs among hygienists during working hours, and to determine the effects of the use of elastic compression stockings. Methods: The study subjects were 40 dental hygienists working at a dental hospital in Daegu. Symptoms of edema of the lower extremities during working hours were characterized by measurement of calf and ankle circumference. Results: Calf and ankle circumference increased during working hours. The use of elastic compression stockings reduced edema of the lower extremities during working hours. Conclusions: Use of elastic compression stockings can reduce levels of lower extremity edema among dental hygienists.

Effects of Foot Bath Therapy on Operating Room Nurses' Lower Extremities Edema, Stress, and Fatigue (족욕요법이 수술실 간호사의 하지 부종, 스트레스 및 피로에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of foot bath therapy on operating room (OR) nurses' lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue. Methods: This study used a randomized control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from August to October 2013, and a total of 50 OR nurses in an university hospital in U Metropolitan City participated in the study: 25 nurses for the experimental group and 25 for the control group. The experimental group received foot bath in which feet were soaked in $40^{\circ}C$ water and immersed up to ankle line for 20 minutes per a day for 12 times. Results: There were significant decrease in the calf edema, physical stress, and fatigue between pre and post foot bath therapy. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that foot bath had the effect in decreasing lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue among OR nurses. Foot bath therapy, therefore, is suggested as a comfort and easy-to-use method in clinical setting to reduce OR nurses' lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue.

Effects of Early Passive ROM Exercise on ROM of Lower Extremities and Foot Edema in Hemiplegia Patients with Stroke (조기 수동적 하지 관절운동이 뇌졸중 후 편마비 환자의 하지 관절가동범위와 발부종에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of early passive range of motion (ROM) exercise on ROM of lower extremities and foot edema in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Methods: The data were collected between August 2009 and April 2010 from 11 patients in the experimental group and 13 in the control group. The passive ROM exercise was performed twice a day for 2 weeks. Results: In the experimental group, ROM of lower extremities (flexion of hip, flexion of knee and ankle) increased significantly compared to that of the control group. There was no significant difference in foot edema between the two groups. Conclusion: The results indicated that the early passive ROM exercise can improve the ROM of lower extremities, but not the foot edema in patients after stroke.

  • Objectives : We report a case of Erythema Nodosum on lower extremities which was by acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment. Methods : We treated a female patient who has erythema nodosom, edema at lower extremities and arthralgia with acupuncture and Moktongdaean-tang.. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we observed shape and number of Erythema Nodosum. We measured circumference of left ankle. We used visual analogue scale(VAS) of arthralgia. Results : Erythema Nodosum on lower extremities, Edema of both ankle were subsided. Arthralgia was gradually disappered. Conclusions : Acupuncture and Moktongdaean-tang have improved the signs and symptoms of Erythema Nodosum case. It is concluded that acupuncture, herbal medicine treatment is considerably effective on Erythema Nodosum.

A Study on the Effects of Ankle Pump Exercise in Reducing Lower Limbs Edema and Pain of Operating Room Nurses (통나무 도구를 이용한 발목 펌프 운동이 수술실 간호사의 하지 부종 및 하지 통증에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of Ankle Pump Exercise on lower limb edema and pain of operating room nurses. Methods: This research was arranged on the basis of the nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. The participants were 41 nurses working in the operating room in 'S' hospital in Seoul and 'H' hospital in Guri City, Korea. Data were collected from August 20 to September 30, 2012. Edema of the lower extremities was measured in terms of the girths of ankles and calves. Pain of the lower extremities was measured in terms of VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) for pain. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage mean, and standard deviation, using the chi2(p) and t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and a paired t-test. The SPSS Win 20.0 program was used for analysis. Results: Hypothesis 1 - "There are significant differences in lower extremity edema between the experimental group and the control group." - was partially supported. Hypothesis 2 - "There are significant differences in lower extremity pain between the experimental group and the control group." - was supported. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate positive practical effects of the Ankle Pump Exercise in reducing the circumference of both ankles, reducing the circumferential edema of both calves, and alleviating the pain of nurses in the operating room. Based on these findings, application of the Ankle Pump Exercise can be considered as an effective method to prevent nurses' health problems in the lower extremities that can be induced by their work during surgical operations.

Two Cases of Cancer-induced Lymphedema Patients Treated with Oryeongsan (종양으로 인한 이차성 림프부종에 대한 오령산 치험 2례)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report two cases which suggest Oryeongsan as a pharmacological treatement option for cancer-induced secondary lymphedema. Methods : The cases were two female patients with peripheral edema. The first was diagnosed with cervical cancer with paraaortic lymph node metastasis and suffered from bilateral edema of the lower extremities. The second was a breast cancer patient with right arm lymphedema, which was aggravated after a weekly regimen of chemotherapy. Oryeongsan was orally administered for 3-4 days to both patients. Results : The symptoms in lower extremities and body weight of the cervical cancer patient decreased. The breast cancer patient did not lose body weight, but pain in upper extremities was reduced. Conclusions : Oryeongsan may potentially be an option for secondary lymphedemas, including cancer-induced lymphedema.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the application of elastic compression stocking during the stand for a long hours of works on edema and pain of lower extremities in ward nurses. Methods: The experimental group was subjected to elastic pressure tights for 5 days from the beginning to the end, and lower extremity edema and ankle and calf circumference were measured. Results: "There are significant differences in lower extremity pain the experimental group of elastic compression stocking and control group" was supported(p<.001). "There are significant differences in lower extremity edema the experimental group of elastic compression stocking and control group" was supported (p<.001). Conclusion: Applying elastic pressure stocking as a method of management of lower extremity pain and lower extremity edema in ward nurses, relieving symptoms related to lower extremity pain and lower extremity edema during work. This is an effective way to prevent problems and improve the health of nurses and provide quality nursing care.

Motor Peripheral Neuropathy Involved Bilateral Lower Extremities Following Acute Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: A Case Report (급성 일산화탄소 중독 환자에서 발생한 양하지 말초 운동신경병증 1례)

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication is a leading cause of severe neuropsychological impairments. Peripheral nerve injury has rarely been reported. Following are brief statements describing the motor peripheral neuropathy involved bilateral lower extremities of a patient who recovered following acute carbon monoxide poisoning. After inhalation of smoke from a fire, a 60-year-old woman experienced bilateral leg weakness without edema or injury. Neurological examination showed diplegia and deep tendon areflexia in lower limbs. There was no sensory deficit in lower extremities, and no cognitive disturbances were detected. Creatine kinase was normal. Electroneuromyogram patterns were compatible with the diagnosis of bilateral axonal injury. Clinical course after normobaric oxygen and rehabilitation therapy was marked by complete recovery of neurological disorders. Peripheral neuropathy is an unusual complication of CO intoxication. Motor peripheral neuropathy involvement of bilateral lower extremities is exceptional. Various mechanisms have been implicated, including nerve compression secondary to rhabdomyolysis, nerve ischemia due to hypoxia, and direct nerve toxicity of carbon monoxide. Prognosis is commonly excellent without sequelae. Emergency physicians should understand the possible-neurologic presentations of CO intoxication and make a proper decision regarding treatment.

Diagnosis and Endovascular Treatment of May-Thurner Syndrome (May-Thurner 증후군의 진단과 혈관내 치료)

  • Background: There are limited number of reports on May-Thurner syndrome (Iliac vein compression syndrome) in Korea, We analysed the clinical features, diagnostic modalities and endovascular treatment of May-Thurner syndrome. Material and Method: We reviewed 12 cases of May-Thurner syndrome between March 2001 and June 2003. Mean age was $57.6\pm2$ years. We were used in venography, color doppler and computed tomographic angiography as diagnostic modalities and in thrombolysis, thrombectomy, angioplasty and stent insertion as endovascular treatment. Result: Clinical features showed edema of lower extremities in 4 patients, pain of lower extremities in 1 patient, edema with pain in 5 patients, and all in 1 patient. In one patient, he did not have any pain and any edema of lower extremities but was diagnosed as May-Thurner syndrome using venography due to varicose veins on lower extremities. Diagnostic modalities included venography, computed tomographic angiography in all patients with clinical presentation except in one patient and color doppler was only performed only in 4 patients. Four kinds of endovascular treatment were performed for May-Thurner syndrome, angioplasty in 11 patients, stent insertion in 10 patients, thrombectomy in 9 patients and thrombolysis for 7 patients. Nine patients were followed up and we can show good blood flow in Left iliac vein for 7 of 9 patients. Conclusion: it is necessary to recognize the possibility of May-Thurner syndrome in Deep vein thrombosis patients and we should use a variety of modalities to diagnose May-Thurner syndrome. Finally, endovascular treatment is a safe and effective therapy for May-Thurner syndrome.
