The Environmental and Economic Impact of Trade between South Korea and the United States

  • This paper analyses carbon emissions and value-added embodied in trade between two large developed countries, South Korea and the United States, during 2000-2014. Using multi-regional input-output (MRIO) tables, our analysis reveals that carbon emissions and value-added embodied in exports grew by 19% and 101% for South Korea but shrank by 43% and 7% for the United States. As a result, South Korea experienced a 40% increase in net carbon exports and 243% increase in net value-added exports. At the industry level, the primary drivers of changes in carbon exports were electricity and basic materials. The majority of industries in witnessed improvements in carbon intensities suggesting improved environmental efficiency. While both countries achieved a decoupling of carbon emissions from value-added exports, substantial year-to-year and sectoral variations were observed. Finally, structural decomposition analysis indicates that domestic supply-side factors played a role in decreasing emissions whereas foreign demand-side factors contributed to emissions increases. In line with the main findings, various implications for policy and future research are discussed.

Knowledge Capital in Economic Growth: A Panel Analysis of 120 Countries

  • This paper approaches knowledge capital as social infrastructure and analyzes its impact on economic growth. To this end, we constructed a panel dataset for 120 countries for the years 2000-2014 and estimated the economic growth function using the panel analysis. As proxies for knowledge capital, we used the R&D expenditure per capita and the number of patent applications per thousand people in each country, both measured in stock. Economic growth was measured in terms of real GDP per capita and real value added per capita at the industry level. The empirical findings demonstrate that knowledge capital accumulated in a society significantly promotes economic growth. Especially R&D stock increases real value added per capita in all industries-not only manufacturing, but also services and agriculture-implying substantial inter-industry spillover effects. The findings of this study suggest that knowledge capital boosts economic growth as core social infrastructure.

Analyses of Early Childhood Teachers' Concept Maps on Economic Education

  • The purpose of the study was to examine early childhood teachers' content knowledge of economic education. The subjects, 60 early childhood teachers, were asked to draw concept maps about early childhood economic education. Their concept maps were analyzed in terms of superordinate and subordinate concepts by contents and frequencies. The results were as follows. First, 248 superordinate concepts were shown, and they were categorized into nine representative terms: 'Scarcity and Choice,' 'Decision Making,' 'Monetary Value,' 'Production,' 'Consumption,' 'Distribution,' 'Restrain,' 'Reuse,' and 'Economic Education Activity.' Second, 1,440 subordinate concepts were shown, and 'coin,' 'bill,' 'saving,' 'bank,' and 'money' were frequently shown. Third, the mean numbers of subordinate concepts per superordinate concepts showed that early childhood teachers had more knowledge about 'Consumption,' 'Monetary Value,' and 'Economic Education Activity' than other superordinate concepts. The results showed the need for early childhood teachers to have more systematic and hierarchical pedagogical content knowledge on economic education.

국가오픈액세스플랫폼 논문검색시스템의 수요와 경제적 이용가치 측정 (Measuring the Economic Use Value of the National Open Access Platform for Accessing Research Papers)

  • 본 연구는 국가오픈액세스플랫폼(AccessON)의 하위시스템인 OA 논문검색(Discover)의 경제적 이용가치 측정을 목적으로 수행되었다. OA 및 OA 지원시스템과 관련한 문헌연구, 가치측정을 위한 심층면담을 통해 해당 서비스의 가치를 시간절감가치로 규명하였고 국내 연구자 1,313명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 연구자 개인의 연간 절감시간가치를 측정하였다. 가치 산출에 필요한 논문검색시간, 논문출판건수, 논문 한편 당 참고문헌 건수 등과 같은 요소들을 국내 연구자들의 실제 학술활동에 기반하여 측정하는 한편, 연도별 Discover 이용자 규모 및 총 이용량 등을 추정하여 총 이용가치를 산출하였다. 그 결과 국내 연구자는 연간 2.84편의 논문을 출판하고, 논문 1편을 검색하고 이용하는데 30.13분이 소요되며 Discover로 인해 5.64분이 절감되어 연구자 1인은 연간 총 225분, 99,384원을 절감하는 것으로 파악되었다. 이와 같이 파악된 기초 데이터에 총 이용 추정치를 적용한 결과, 8년간의 사업기간 동안 총 820억 원의 경제적 가치가 산출되었고, OA논문을 의무기탁하는 법제화 상황에서는 추가적으로 113억 원의 가치가 창출되는 것으로 추정되었다. 본 연구 결과의 의의는 국가 OA논문 통합서비스플랫폼 사업 투자가 충분한 경제적 가치가 있음을 실증적으로 확인함과 동시에 향후 학술연구 관련 경제성 평가에서 활용될 수 있는 중요한 국내 기반 데이터를 산출했다는 측면에서 찾을 수 있다.

패션제품 버리기 어려움과 패션라이프스타일 및 소비가치의 효과 (The influence of fashion lifestyle and consumption value on the difficulty of discarding unused fashion products)

  • This study aimed to investigate the influence of fashion lifestyles and consumption values on the difficulty of discarding unused fashion products. To achieve this purpose, this study surveyed female consumers aged 20s-50s to gain empirical analysis in July 2018. Data were analyzed for 236 subjects who were selected through online and offline sampling. The results were as follows. First, consumers tend to have difficulties discarding unused fashion goods. Consumers that have a higher income tend to have greater difficulty when choosing to discard items. Factors influencing the difficulty in discarding items were emotional attachment, usefulness in the future, economic value, and the lack of organizing skills. Usefulness in the future and the lack of organizing skills are the most significant factors influencing the discarding difficulty. Second, discarding difficulty had a significant relationship with fashion lifestyle, indicating that consumers seeking a fashion lifestyle that purchase more expensive brands tend to have more difficulty when discarding items. Third, each factor had a meaningful relationship with fashion goods consumption values. Those pursuing conspicuous value showed a greater difficulty discarding items due to emotional attachment, economic value, and lack of organizing skills. Pursuance of situational value showed a higher discarding difficulty than economic value factors. Pursuance of practical value showed a higher difficulty than both usefulness in future situations and economic value factors. Pursuance of differentiation value showed a higher discarding difficulty than emotional attachment and usefulness in the future factor. This study will help understanding consumers psychological mechanisms that experience difficulty in terms of the discarding of unused fashion goods.

  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development(WBCSD) is effort to achieve sustainable development in economic growth, environmental preservation and social development. Being this way, it is essential for developing evaluation tool which quantify to fulfill sustainable development. Eco-efficiency is one of the quantitative tools to evaluate environmental impact and economic aspect. Eco-efficiency, in general term, means creating more value of product or services with less impact to environment. It indicates as environmental impact in denominator and value of product or services in numerator. Eco-efficiency shows how much economic value reveals to unit environmental impact caused by product or service as an indicator. This study aims at developing eco-efficiency indicator of railway industry considering use stage among the entire life cycle stage of KTX and Saemaul train and also, figure out eco-efficiency value through indicator. Therethrough, it is enables to evaluate created value per environmental aspects. Since rail vehicles demands a lot of energy to transport people during use stage, the environmental impact is more significant than other lkfe cycle stages. Therefore, it quantified environmental indicator as CO2 emission and economic indicator as transportation record per a year with an annual income. This study contributes to be used as a tool for quantifying indicator of comparison evaluation in respect of rail vehicle in use stage.

공동사용주파수의 사회경제적 가치분석 (A Socio-Economic Value Analysis of Sharing Spectrum in Korea)

  • 본 논문에서는 주파수의 공동 사용을 위한 서비스 및 그 사회경제적 가치를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 주파수 공동 사용의 개념과 방식을 제시하고, 공동 사용 주파수의 사회경제적 가치분석을 위해 전문가 조사를 실시하였다. 국내에서 이용할 수 있는 1.4~4.5 GHz 대역에서 도출된 910 MHz의 후보 대역별로 적용 가능한 서비스의 경제적 가치와 사회적 파급 효과를 분석하였다. 이 분석 결과를 토대로 공동사용 주파수 대역에 적합한 주파수를 많이 필요로 하는 서비스로서, 이동 통신, WiFi(이동 통신 off-loading 포함), ASA, 공공서비스, M2M, smart home/factory 서비스를 제시하였다.

  • 본 연구는 경제적 가치와 환경가치를 유기적으로 결합시키는 행복경제학적 접근을 적용하여 자연관과 효용의 관계를 비교하고자 한다. 회귀분석을 수행한 결과 다음과 같은 사항을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 본 분석에서는 자연관에 따라 행복함수 형태가 다르다는 것을 실증적으로 확인하였다. '인간중심적 자연관'의 가치체계는 경제가치중심이며 환경, 신뢰와 같은 비 물질가치 요소가 무시할 정도로 낮은 것임을 통계적 유의도를 통하여 알 수 있다. 둘째, '생태중심적 자연관'은 경제를 포함한 환경, 사람신뢰를 동시에 고려하는 중층적 가치체계를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그들의 가치체계에 따르면 인간의 편의와 경제적 가치에 치우친 행위는 행복극대화 관점에서 합리적이지 않다는 점을 분석 결과에서 알 수 있다.

실물옵션 가치평가모형을 이용한 국도건설사업의 경제적 가치 평가 (Economic Evaluation of National Highway Construction Projects using Real Option Pricing Models)

  • PURPOSES : This study evaluates the economic value of national highway construction projects using Real Option Pricing Models. METHODS : We identified the option premium for uncertainties associated with flexibilities according to the future's change in national highway construction projects. In order to evaluate value of future's underlying asset, we calculated the volatility of the unit price per year for benefit estimation such as VOTS, VOCS, VICS, VOPCS and VONCS that the "Transportation Facility Investment Evaluation Guidelines" presented. RESULTS : We evaluated the option premium of underlying asset through a case study of the actual national highway construction projects using ROPM. And in order to predict the changes in the option value of the future's underlying asset, we evaluated the changes of option premium for future's uncertainties by the defer of the start of construction work, the contract of project scale, and the abandon of project during pre-land compensation stages that were occurred frequently in the highway construction projects. Finally we analyzed the sensitivity of the underlying asset using volatility, risk free rate and expiration date of option. CONCLUSIONS : We concluded that a highway construction project has economic value even though static NPV had a negative(-) value because of the sum of the existing static NPV and the option premium for the future's uncertainties associated with flexibilities.

주거만족도 모델에서의 주거가치의 역할 연구 (The Effects of Housing Values on Housing Satisfaction Model)

  • This study was designed to examine the effects of housing values on housing satisfaction model. The empirical model of this study was based on the Goulart(1982). Data were collected through questionnaire survey, and the sample consisted of 285 households in Kimhae. Housing values were grouped into four clusters : the health and convenience value, the personal and social value, the location value, and the economic value. The major findings were that 1) the concordance between values and the actual housing conditions contributes significantly to the prediction of housing astisfaction, and 2) the control variables including sociodemographic and economic characteristics and housing values themselves did not directly influence on housing satisfaction.
