  • This study aims to examine the business diversification status of Global Container Terminal Operators(GTOs) and to determine the impact of business diversification on corporate performance using a quantitative index. To this end, a panel regression analysis was conducted using 10-year time series data of 12 GTOs. The results of the empirical analysis show that, first, the mean of the business diversification index of GTOs is rather low at 0.244; second, the business diversification of GTOs affects ROE and TobinsQ among corporate performance. In the case of the dependent variable ROE, we found that there is a non-linear relationship, with no effect in the early stage, a negative effect after a certain level, and a positive effect after a certain level, while the dependent variable TobinsQ has a positive linear relationship. As a result, it seems that GTOs with strong global influence should pursue business diversification in the direction of strengthening and expanding their core business capabilities, and efficient selection and focus at the corporate level are necessary to avoid excessive diversification due to indiscriminate business expansion.

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct a dynamic analysis of married women's return to the workforce following first childbirth. We have based our investigation on the data compiled by the KLIPS, where the workforce performance is the focal point of it's research, and by these materials, this study has analyzed the aspects of the factors that decide post-childbirth return to the workforce. We have applied the Cox Regression Hazard Model, where corroborative evidence are statistically applied. The following are the conclusions that were derived from this research: First, according to the study, academic background is a vital factor in reducing the gap and time of women's return to the workforce. Second, whether having active child-care after giving birth or not doubles the chances of women returning to the workforce. Third, if the pre-birth employment form was a wage-work and the rate of returning to the workforce was lower than the non-wage, relatively speaking, this reflects that the non-wage form of work, which provides a better possibility to return to the workforce after giving birth, could be another way to prevent women's career discontinuation.

  • The creative class is the class of workers whose job is to create meaningful new forms. Recently, much attention has been focused on the role of the creative class in regional development. Many policy makers have invested to amenities to attract more creative class into their cities or regions for regional economic growth. However, there are only a few studies about the migration of the creative class in Korea. The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of the movement of the creative class by using the 17th Korean Labor & Income Panel Study. According to empirical results, the creative class are more likely to move than the non-creative class. The characteristic of creative class who moved is related to married man aged 20s and 30s without own house. Also, there is the difference between determinants of migration of the creative class and the non-creative class. It was founded that the most important determinants of migration of the creative class are housing related reasons such as home ownership and job reasons. Relationship, convenient facilities are not important factors when the creative class make a decision to move.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the empirical analysis way for measuring the seaport efficiency by using the previous radial model and the newly modified non-radial models( panel additive model, panel RAM model, and panel SBM model)with Spearman rank order correlation coefficient(SROCC) for 20 Korean ports during 11 years(1997-2007) for 1 inputs(port investment amount) and 4 outputs(Number of Ship Calls, Port Revenue, Customer Satisfaction Score for Port Service and Container Cargo Throughput). The main empirical results of this paper are as follows. First, consistency ratio of SROCC in terms of efficiency scores between radial and panel Additive model was over about 76% and overall consistency ratio was about 71.6%. Second, an efficiency of panel RAM model was higher than that of radial model with similarity. However, panel SBM model shows the very similar efficiency scores with panel radial model. Third, the slack size of radial model is smaller compared to non-radial model. Models' ranking orders in terms of efficiency scores, number of efficient ports are panel RAM model, panel SBM model, and radial model. The order from the minimum efficiency scores was the same order like just before. The policy implication to the Korean seaports and planner is that Korean seaports should introduce the new methods like non-radial models(panel additive model, panel RAM model, and panel SBM model) for measuring the port performance.

  • This study aims to provide solutions concerned with to residential moving companies about their operational problems. In order to shed light on these problem, factor analysis and fuzzy AHP method are adopted. Selected factors are low quality of workers and equipments, weak condition of business, policy and form of a contract, and excessive competition. The results of survey show that excessive competition is the most urgent problem compared with other problems. In the twelve-measured variables, The problem of non-certificated firms, low service quality caused by excessive competition, and claims caused by lack of service instruction are chosen as the urgent matters. As a result of the analyses, the study would propose policy directions how to solve these problems. Firstly, the government should make the legal basis of operating the industry because there is too competitive in the field. Secondly, the government should regulate firms which have not a certificate because they are the cause of low service quality in the field. Thirdly, in order to improve the service quality, the study would suggest that the managers should instruct the workers of residential moving companies. Lastly, the paper would suggest that customers check the certificate of the firm allowed by the government authorities.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the physical health, anxiety and depression of the Dan-Jeon Breathing trained group with those of a non-trained group and to analyze the relationship between the training period of Dan-Jeon Breathing method and physical health, anxiety, and depression. The number of people in the Dan-Jeon Breathing trained group over 3 months was 149 and in the non-trained group 142. Data were collected from August to October 1999. As tools, 35 physical symptom questions were chosen from The Cornell Medical Index modified by Nam(1965) and from the Symptom Checklist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) by Kim(1984); 10 questions on anxiety and 13 questions on depression were used in the study. The statistics of the study were gathered by using SPSS Window; the analysis was made by applying $X^2$-test, t-test, Pearson correlation, ANOVA and Scheffe tests. The results were as follows. 1. The Dan-Jeon Breathing trained group had lower physical symptom score and showed less anxiety and depression than the non-trained group, which supported the 1st, 2nd, 3rd hypotheses. 2. The longer the training period of Dan-Jeon Breathing, the lower the physical symptom score, which supports the 4th hypothesis, but the 5th and, 6th hypotheses were not supported because anxiety and depression did not get lower as the training period of Dan-Jeon Breathing got longer. 3. The physical symptom score, anxiety and depression that were made by the general characteristics of Dan-Jeon Breathing trained group were analyzed. As a result, the physical symptom score of women was greater than that of men. Physical symptoms score and the rate of anxiety and depression were different by education levels. The degree of anxiety was different by age. Those who have a religion have a higher physical symtoms score than people who have no religion. There was no difference in physical health score, anxiety and depression according to marital status, economic status and occupations. The results suggest that the physical and mental health status of Dan-Jeon Breathing trained group is better than that of the non-trained group. Physical symptoms scores gets lower as the training period of Dan-Jeon Breathing gets longer which results in the improvement of physical health status.

  • Education effect on women's participation in the labor market has been known to be small in Korea. Then, the meaning of women's education as human capital needs to be questioned. Both the increasing desire for working among women and the criticism to under-utilization of women's education in the labor market reflect that women's education is surely perceived as human capital. However, women's education dose not seem to function well as human capital in the labor market. According to previous studies, it is pointed out that educational effect on women's participation in the labor market is weak but the effect on earnings is evident. There were few attempts to evaluate economic returns to women's education over the life-cycle analyzing both working and non-working women. Considering that the economic behaviors of women in nonagricultural sector have changed little until the mid-1980s, I tried to examine the meaning of education as human capital over the women's life cycle using cross - sectional data. This study shows that the educational effect on women's participation in the labor market does not exist and the working period is very short. Although the educational effect on earnings among working women is clearly shown, it tends to limited to younger women. Despite the educational effect on earnings among younger women, the meaning of education as human capital among Korean women does not hold well due to short working period and the low participation of the educated in the labor market.

  • We present an estimation model for optimal channel capacity required to data traffic transmission. The optimal channel capacity should be calculated in order to satisfy the permitted transmission delay of each wireless data services. Considering the discrete-time operation of digital communication systems and batch arrival of packet-switched traffic for various wireless services, $Geo^x$/G/1 non-preemptive priority queueing model is analyzed. Based on the heuristic interpretation of the mean waiting time, the mean waiting times of various data packets which have the service priority. Using the mean waiting times of service classes, we propose the procedure of determining the optimal channel capacity to satisfy the quality of service requirement of the mean delay of wireless services. We look forward to applying our results to improvement in wireless data services and economic operation of the network facilities.
