Determinants of Green Practices in the Petrochemical Sector: An Empirical Study

  • This paper discusses the determinants of green practices and incorporates some empirical findings from a recent study in the petrochemical sector in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The study was comprised of a survey and follow-up interviews with senior executives who participated in the survey. Of fourteen companies involved, the findings affirmed that the investigation of accidents, provision of an emergency response, employee training, decreasing the production of wastes, and pre-treating wastes before disposal should be stressed. Government requirement, the economic reasons and public pressures were the driving forces of green practices. The five most important determinants identified include performance evaluation, financial justification, impacts on company, management leadership and operations integration. Implementing environmental management systems as a feasible approach to green practices in the petrochemical sector was explored. The findings provide guidance that helps organisations to accommodate the determinants of green practices into achieving sustainable environmental goals.

  • In industrialised countries, innovation is a key source of economic growth. Research is a key driver of technological innovation and involves the process of systematic investigation and/or experimentation to discover new knowledge. The Governments' industry innovation policy supports a business focus on Research and Development (R&D) through a range of programs in order to achieve these aims. The Innovation Statement, launched by the Australian Prime Minister in January 2001, commits an additional $3 billion over five years to encourage and support innovation. The Australian Government aims to build world competitive firms and strong research capability in industry to strengthen Australia's international competitiveness and increase national prosperity. It develops policies and programs to enhance investment in innovation. The Australian Government also undertakes analysis and comparisons of innovation policies, instruments and approaches to maintain a leading-edge National Innovation System. This includes analysis of the innovation activities of other nations, and evaluation of the impacts of innovation policies and programs on Australia's institutions and enterprises. This paper examines Australia's Innovation policies, Backing Australian Ability.

  • 2007년 태안에서 발생한 허베이스피리트호 유류오염사고는 해양환경 뿐만 아니라 지역경제를 황폐화시키고, 피해 주민간 지역간 갈등을 일으키는 등 피해지역 주변환경에 많은 영향을 초래하였는데, 그 영향의 대부분은 경제와 관련된 사항이었다. 지역사회 갈등유발의 주된 원인 역시 경제 문제인 것으로 파악되었고, 다음으로는 정부의 갈등관리제도 및 정책적 대안의 미흡이었다. 따라서, 유류사고 극복을 위한 정부 정책도 경제적 지원체계 개선과 갈등 치유를 위한 제도적 보완에 주안점을 둘 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 허베이스피리트호 사고 후 정부에서 취한 지원정책들을 살펴보고, 향후 사고 발생시 정부가 활용할 수 있는 대응정책 방안을 제시하였다.

Accessing socio-economic and climate change impacts on surface water availability in Upper Indus Basin, Pakistan with using WEAP model.

  • According to Asian Development Bank report Pakistan is among water scarce countries. Climate scenario on the basis IPCC fifth assessment report (AR5) revealed that annual mean temperature of Pakistan from year 2010-2019 was $17C^o$ which will rise up to $21C^o$ at the end of this century, similarly almost 10% decrease of annual rainfall is expected at the end of the century. It is a changing task in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan to meet the water demands of rapidly increasing population in a changing climate. While many studies have tackled scarcity and stream flow forecasting of the Upper Indus Basin (UIB) Pakistan, very few of them are related to socio-economic and climate change impact on sustainable water management of UIB. This study investigates the pattern of current and future surface water availability for various demand sites (e.g. domestic, agriculture and industrial) under different socio-economic and climate change scenarios in Upper Indus Basin (UIB) Pakistan for a period of 2010 to 2050. A state-of-the-art planning tool Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) is used to analyze the dynamics of current and future water demand. The stream flow data of five sub catchment (Astore, Gilgit, Hunza, Shigar and Shoyke) and entire UIB were calibrated and validated for the year of 2006 to 2011 using WEAP. The Nash Sutcliffe coefficient and coefficient of determination is achieved ranging from 0.63 to 0.92. The results indicate that unmet water demand is likely to increase severe threshold and the external driving forces e.g. socio-economic and climate change will create a gap between supply and demand of water.

Landuse and Landcover Change and the Impacts on Soil Carbon Storage on the Bagmati Basin of Nepal

  • The upsurge of population, internal migration, economic activities and developmental works has brought significant land use and land cover (LULC) change over the period of 1990 and 2010 in the Bagmati basin of Nepal. Along with alteration on various other ecosystem services like water yield, water quality, soil loss etc. carbon sequestration is also altered. This study thus primary deals with evaluation of LULC change and its impact on the soil carbon storage for the period 1990 to 2010. For the evaluation, InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) Carbon model is used. Residential and several other infrastructural development activities were prevalent on the study period and as a result in 2010 major soil carbon reserve like forest area is decreased by 7.17% of its original coverage in 1990. This decrement has brought about a subsequent decrement of 1.39 million tons of carbon in the basin. Conversion from barren land, water bodies and built up areas to higher carbon reserve like forest and agriculture land has slightly increased soil carbon storage but still, net reduction is higher. Thus, the spatial output of the model in the form of maps is expected to help in decision making for future land use planning and for restoration policies.

  • 기존의 대기전력차단시스템의 단점을 극복하고자 최근 지능형 대기전력 제어시스템이 개발되기에 이르렀다. 하지만 기존의 시스템 보다 투자금액이 높은 문제로 도입에 대한 타당성 검토가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 LCCA 및 LCA를 이용하여 경제적 측면 및 환경적 측면을 종합적으로 분석하여 도입의 타당성을 검토하였다. 또한 결과의 신뢰성을 확보하기 위하여 민감도 분석을 실시하였다.

공적분 관계를 고려한 연구개발과 경제성장의 상호관계 연구 (Long-run Relationship between R&D Expenditures and Economic Growth)

  • 본 연구는 OECD 21개 국가의 패널 자료(1981~2011)를 활용하여 제2세대내생적성장이론의 실증적 타당성을 검정하였다. 모든 변수들이 비정상성을 지니므로 변수들 간의 공적분 검정을 수행한 결과 연구개발수준은 총요소생산성에 유의한 영향을 미친다는 준 내생적성장이론이 강력히 지지되는 반면, 완전한 내생적 성장이론에 따른 연구개발집약도와 총요소생산성 성장 간의 유의한 관계는 일부 모형에 국한하여 적합한 것으로 분석되었다. 총요소생산성성장 함수 추정 결과 국내 및 국외 연구개발수준의 증가는 총요소생산성에 모두 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나, 연구개발집약도의 경우는 일부 모형에서만 국내 및 국외 연구개발집약도가 총요소생산성에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 준 내생적 성장이론이 강하게 지지되었다. 다만 국가 간의 기술격차는 총요소생산성 격차를 줄이는 효과가 있는 것으로 분석되어 완전한 내생적 성장이론의 기술격차가설은 타당한 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 분석결과를 바탕으로 준 내생적 성장이론적 관점에서 정책적 함의를 살펴보면 OECD 국가들의 경제는 총연구개발투자에 대한 생산성 체감의 가정이 타당하며, 따라서 지속적인 경제성장을 유지하기 위해서는 연구개발투자의 지속적인 증가가 수반되어야 한다는 시사점을 얻을 수 있다.

  • 환경영향평가 연구의 목표(국가환경정책법에 명시)는 개발사업에 대한 여러가지 인자들(생태적, 경제적, 사회적)을 사업이 결정되기 전에 고려하여 사업이 진행되도록 허용하는 것을 확보하는데 있다. 말하자면, 목표는 환경영향평가를 계획과 정책과정에 통합하는데 있다. 국가환경정책법이 시행된 지 25년이 된 오늘날에 그러한 통합의 방향으로 진행의 정도에 관해서 문의하는 것은 적절하다. 이글은 미국의 대평원지역에서의 자원개발사업과 관련하여 계획과 정책과정에서의 환경영향평가에 대한 역할을 검토한다. 특히 에너지 추출 및 변환사업과 관련한 사회경계적 영향과 사업평가, 지방과 지역계획, 주정책개발에서의 환경영향평가에 대한 역할을 설명한다.

Re-evaluation of the Genus Antrodia (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) in Korea

  • The wood decay fungi Antrodia P. Karst. play important ecological roles and have significant industrial and economic impacts as both wood degraders and sources of pharmaceutical and biotechnological products. Although each Antrodia species has distinct morphological characteristics, the misidentification rate is especially high due to their simple morphological characters. A combination of morphological and internal transcribed spacer region sequence analyses revealed that 27 of 89 specimens previously identified by morphology alone were correct, whereas 35 of these specimens were misidentified as other Antrodia species. We report here that seven Antrodia species exist in Korea (A. albida, A. heteromorpha, A. malicola, A. serialis, A. sinuosa, A. sitchensis, and A. xantha) and based on these specimens, we provide taxonomic descriptions of these species, except for A. serialis, which was only confirmed by isolate.
