At the moment, the reduction of building energy consumption is a unavoidable task of mankind for conserving global environment. Decreasing overall U-value of building envelope and air infiltration, especially in Korean climate condition with clear four seasons, are the obvious solutions for the objective. Thus low glazing ratio with small window openings are required for heating and cooling load reduction in buildings. Using larger window openings could provide better natural ventilation but it also increases the direct solar radiation penetration into indoor space, heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. On the other hand, the ventilation rates decreasing problem with smaller window openings could be occurred. As a solution for it, the use of casement window can cause increasing natural ventilation rates by wing wall effect. This paper focuses on deduce the most efficient opening type of casement window in Korean climate. To estimate ventilation performance of each opening types, CFD simulation was used. The best performance of opening type in every wind direction is opening both windows to the center and the most appropriate opening type for Korean climate is also opening both windows to center.
Purpose: Quasi-steady state simulations have played a pivoting role to expand the user group of simulation to design engineers and architects in Korea. Initially they are introduced in the market as a building energy performance rating tool. In domestic practice, however, quasi-steady state simulations seem to be regarded as a de facto simulation only available for energy retrofit. Selection of ECMs and economic feasibility analysis are being decided through these tools, which implies that running these tools has become a norm step of the Investment-grade Audit. Method: This study aims at identifying issues and problems with the current practice via test cases, analyzing the reasons and opportunities, and then eventually suggesting proper uses of quasi-steady state and dynamic simulations. Result: The functionality of quasi-steady state simulations is more optimized to the rating. If they are to used for energy retrofits, their off-the-shelf functions also need to be expanded for customization and detailed reports. Yet their roles may be limited only to the go/no go decision; because their algorithms are still weak at precisely estimating energy and load savings that are required for making investment decisions compared to detailed simulations.
The evaluation of the indoor environment of the Assembly Hall in the University, which is designed to be a large space, requires efficient design of its heating system that takes into consideration natural convection and the characteristics of the occupant's spaces. Indoor thermal environment was measured in the field and simulated with CFD code. The estimations of temperature distribution and indoor airflow distribution must be carried out simultaneously, as the thermal stratification is induced by natural convection flows. In order to simulate the even distribution of factors affecting the indoor environment, including temperature and airflow, Phoenics is used. The turbulent flow model adopted is the RNG k- model. The inlets and outlets of the air-conditioning systems, material and thermal properties, and the size of the test room ($35m{\times}18m{\times}10m$) are used for the simulation. Since the Assembly Hall is symmetric, half of the space is simulated. A Cartesian grid is used for calculation and the number of grids are respectively $60{\times}45{\times}35$. The results of the computer simulation during winter conditions are compared with the measurements at the typical points in the assembly hall with the heating system. After evaluating the results of the computer simulations, the methods of the heating system and layout are suggested.
Purpose: Temperature in urban areas increase much more than suburban areas and it is called urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. There are several solutions to control UHI phenomenon such as green roof system, water space construction, and cool roof system. However, application of green roof system and cool roof system to some of the buildings which compose the city has a critical limit. Therefore, in order to diminish the temperature rising and UHI phenomenon due to climate change of the city, it needs to approach from the viewpoint of site or city, rather than the viewpoint of individual buildings. This study is aims at analyzing UHI phenomenon by characteristics of surface materials and suggesting the solutions to reduce UHI phenomenon by types of complex. Method: Literature reviews were conducted to analyze the cause, mitigating plan, and recent trends of UHI phenomenon. For the simulation analysis, the type of complex was classified 3 representative complex. Based on measured reflectivity, simulation about UHI phenomenon was conducted by setting 4 strategies; albedo of roof, road pavement, green roof system, and vegetating around buildings. Result: As the results of simulating the UHI reduction factor by types of complex, it showed that the effect of temperature reduction on the building roof layer is more effective than adjusting the reflectivity of buildings such as green roof system, planting near the buildings in both the detached house complex, apartment complex, and commercial complex.

The photovoltaic is one of the most important sustainable technologies appliable to architectures. The power performance mainly depends on the installation conditions of them. This study aims to evaluate the power performance of photovoltaic system by the installation conditions, the tracking methods and reflecting mirrors. For the study, the Solar Pro computer simulations have been conducted on installation angles, solar azimuth and solar altitude. Also, the field mock-up tests are performed to of its application to verify the simulation results. Both the results of the experiment and the simulation have proved that the efficiency of 90-degree fixed angle method was higher than that of 30-degree fixed angle, the efficiency of altitude tracking was better than that of azimuth tracking method, and changing both the altitude and the azimuth together is more efficient rather than the shortened tracing way. In addition, the light-concentrating method in which the incidence angle of the sun is controlled by an adhered reflector has been analyzed to have better efficiency than the general method of tracing according to the orbit of the sun. Therefore, this thesis is expected to offer the basic data to set a more effective tracing-type of photovoltaic power generation system in the future. For this, more researches are to be conducted hereafter on a high efficiency drive motor and the establishment of an economic system.
Schools are one of favorable public buildings for Renewable Energy(RE) systems due to site conditions and their energy demand profiles(e.g. daytime-based use of hot water and heating/cooling). Although the government encourages schools to be equipped with RE systems, the adoption of RE systems in existing energy supply systems faces technical and financial barriers. For example, when installing a RE-based combination system(RECS) to meet the energy demand at various school scales, identifying cost effective combination of capacities of the RECS is not trivial since it usually requires technically intensive work including detailed simulation and demand/supply analysis with extensive data. This kind of simulation-based approaches is hardly implementable in practice. To address this, a simpler and applicable decision-supporting method is suggested in this study. This paper presents a simplified model in support of decision-making for optimal capacities of RECS within given budget scales and schools sizes. The proposed model was derived from detailed simulation results and statistical data. Using this model, the optimal capacities of RECS can be induced from the number of classes in a school.
The apartment buildings now covers more than 50% of the total residential types in Korea and the urban residential area becomes increasingly congested with newly constructed high-rise apartment buildings. Judicial precedents require, for securing the solar rights in the residential area, that the consecutive sunshine duration should be at least two hours from 9:00 to 15:00 or the accumulative sunshine duration should be at least four hours from 8:00 to 16:00 as of the winter solstice. Disputes are increasing, however, on infringed solar rights and view rights for the neighboring structures as cases occur where the requirement cannot be satisfied in congested residential areas. The sunshine duration scan be assessed by measuring it on the site of the dispute, but it is impracticable to actually measure it for every case on the winter solstice, only one day out of the whole year. At a trial, therefore, 3D computer simulation is used to calculate the sunshine duration and determine the extent of infringement for submission of the evaluation to be used as the basis of the judgment. The simulation, however, may have an error in its result up to the program characteristics and the accuracy of the input data such as the structure shape and height, the distance between structures, and the ground level. This study, therefore, used a self-developed VIEW program with Autodesk VIZ 2006 to provide a simulation method for solar access evaluation, and verified its efficacy by comparing the results with the actual measurements.
The objective of this study is to verify the safety in case of fire and change of residential environment for different wall construction approaches in a stairways apartment house. In order to confirm that case_1, which is current case that most of wall is opened and the case 2, which upper part of wall is limitedly opened are compared and analyzed based on simulations of fire, escape and natural ventilation performance. The analysis reveals that possible escape time for case 1 was more than 600 seconds and for case 2 was 195 seconds. Since the escape times for both cases were over 128 seconds, it would be reasonable to assume that every resident would escape. The simulation results on natural ventilation performance shows the air change per hour of case 1 and case 2 were .19n/h and .16n/h and there was 1.2 times difference. However, the difference was too insignificant and it could be seen as that different approaches on wall construction would not significantly influence on natural ventilation performance.

This study sampled endangered species, Lamprotula coreana, and surveyed its habitat at the Guem River with three times from June to August 2013. To assess the habitat, this study conducted field survey considering diverse physical conditions of stream, such as pool, run and riffle, and measured transect, water depth, water velocity, substrate structure, and habitat type. When L. coreana collected, length, weight and age were measured. Water velocity, water depth and substrate structure were recorded to develop HSI (habitat suitability index) and performed PHABSIM (physical habitat simulation) to estimate the optimum flow discharge. Water level, flow discharge and transect data were used for habitat assessment, and PHABSIM was applied to calculate WUA (weighed usable area). Shell length was $73.1{\pm}18.4mm$ (28.5-102.0 mm), shell weight was $131.6{\pm}72.3g$ (28.0-281.0 g) and age was two to seven years from L. coreana collected at the upstream of the Guem River. Developed HSI indicated that the optimal habitat for L. coreana was 0.4-0.5 m for water depth, 0.3-0.5 m/s for water velocity and sand to boulder for substrate structure. The optimum ecological flow discharge for L. coreana was 2.1 cms and WUA was $3,730m^2$/1000 m by the result of PHABSIM. Recently, river construction work and habitat disturbance have caused negative impact on the distribution of L. coreana. The result of this study would provide fundamental data for habitat restoration and management of L. coreana.

Urban land use changes by human activities affect spatial configuration of urban areas and their surrounding ecosystems. Although it is necessary to identify patterns of urban land use changes and to simulate future changes for sustainable urban management, simulation of land use changes is still challenging due to their uncertainty and complexity. Cellular automata model is widely used to simulate urban land use changes based on cell-based approaches. However, cell-based models can not reflect features of actual land use changes and tend to simulate fragmented patterns. To solve these problems, object-based cellular automata models are developed, which simulate land use changes by land patches. This study simulate future land use changes in Hanam city using an object-based cellular automata model. Figure of merit of the model is 24.1%, which assess accuracy of the simulation results. When a baseline scenario was applied, urban decreased by 16.4% while agriculture land increased by 9.0% and grass increased by 19.3% in a simulation result of 2038 years. In an urban development scenario, urban increased by 22.4% and agriculture land decreased by 26.1% while forest and grass did not have significant changes. In a natural conservation scenario, urban decreased by 29.5% and agriculture land decreased by 8.8% while each forest and grass increased by 6% and 42.8%. The model can be useful to simulate realistic urban land use change effectively, and then, applied as a decision support tool for spatial planning.
