  • We propose new approaches to thin film transistor fabrication that use carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires as active elements. These nanomaterials which are essentially studied in the context of the post CMOS era will certainly impact the active matrix display industry in the near future.

  • This paper presents the multi-objective optimisation of an Inductive Coupled Power Transfer (ICPT) device. A setup as complicated as the one at hand in this paper is extremely hard to model analytically. To acquire some knowledge about the influence of the geometric factors, a sensitivity analysis is first performed using design of experiment (DoE) and finite-element modelling (FEM). It allows validating that the choice of the free factors is relevant. This being done, the optimisation itself is performed using a genetic algorithm (GA), with two objectives and a strict functioning constraint.

  • This note presents an analytical solution for the determination of the shape factor of a flush bottom piezometer in a uniform, isotropic, and incompressible deep soil deposit. The deduced shape factor is compared to published values obtained by approximate methods. Depending on the selected value, the difference may reach 11%.

  • In this paper, the magnetic coupling between an induction cooker and a metallic pot is studied for various winding topologies. Effects of the winding orientation on the power transfer capability and on the emitted magnetic field under the cooker are discussed and compared. A novel topology inspired by permanent magnet Halbach array is proposed. This consists in coupling in both horizontal and vertical directions and to create an asymmetric field in order to reduce the emission under the cooker.

  • This paper introduces the design of a fuzzy logic controller in conjunction with direct torque control strategy for a Permanent Magnet synchronous machine. A stator flux angle mapping technique is proposed to reduce significantly the size of the rule base to a great extent so that the fuzzy reasoning speed increases. Also, a fuzzy resistance estimator is developed to estimate the change in the stator resistance. The change in the steady state value of stator current for a constant torque and flux reference is used to change the value of stator resistance used by the controller to match the machine resistance.

  • Special examples of harmonic manifolds that are not symmetric, proving that the conjecture posed by Lichnerowicz fails in the non-compact case have been intensively studied. We completely classify homogeneous structures on Damek-Ricci spaces equipped with the left invariant metric.

  • This paper presents the decision support system using fuzzy knowledge to adapt the cutting conditions chosen by a conventional expert system to a particular machine tool, workpiece and clamping system. These preliminary results demonstrate the capability of fuzzy logic to adjust cutting parameters taking into account parameters difficult to quantify.
