  • This study analyses the difference of contents and tones of arguments among three Korean major newspapers, the Kyunghyang Shinmoon, the HanKyoreh, and the Dong-A Ilbo. It is commonly accepted that newspapers in Korea explicitly deliver their own tone of arguments when they talk about some sensitive issues and topics. It could be controversial if readers of newspapers read the news without being aware of the type of tones of arguments because the contents and the tones of arguments can affect readers easily. Thus it is very desirable to have a new tool that can inform the readers of what tone of argument a newspaper has. This study presents the results of clustering and classification techniques as part of text mining analysis. We focus on six main subjects such as Culture, Politics, International, Editorial-opinion, Eco-business and National issues in newspapers, and attempt to identify differences and similarities among the newspapers. The basic unit of text mining analysis is a paragraph of news articles. This study uses a keyword-network analysis tool and visualizes relationships among keywords to make it easier to see the differences. Newspaper articles were gathered from KINDS, the Korean integrated news database system. KINDS preserves news articles of the Kyunghyang Shinmun, the HanKyoreh and the Dong-A Ilbo and these are open to the public. This study used these three Korean major newspapers from KINDS. About 3,030 articles from 2008 to 2012 were used. International, national issues and politics sections were gathered with some specific issues. The International section was collected with the keyword of 'Nuclear weapon of North Korea.' The National issues section was collected with the keyword of '4-major-river.' The Politics section was collected with the keyword of 'Tonghap-Jinbo Dang.' All of the articles from April 2012 to May 2012 of Eco-business, Culture and Editorial-opinion sections were also collected. All of the collected data were handled and edited into paragraphs. We got rid of stop-words using the Lucene Korean Module. We calculated keyword co-occurrence counts from the paired co-occurrence list of keywords in a paragraph. We made a co-occurrence matrix from the list. Once the co-occurrence matrix was built, we used the Cosine coefficient matrix as input for PFNet(Pathfinder Network). In order to analyze these three newspapers and find out the significant keywords in each paper, we analyzed the list of 10 highest frequency keywords and keyword-networks of 20 highest ranking frequency keywords to closely examine the relationships and show the detailed network map among keywords. We used NodeXL software to visualize the PFNet. After drawing all the networks, we compared the results with the classification results. Classification was firstly handled to identify how the tone of argument of a newspaper is different from others. Then, to analyze tones of arguments, all the paragraphs were divided into two types of tones, Positive tone and Negative tone. To identify and classify all of the tones of paragraphs and articles we had collected, supervised learning technique was used. The Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayesian classifier algorithm provided in the MALLET package was used to classify all the paragraphs in articles. After classification, Precision, Recall and F-value were used to evaluate the results of classification. Based on the results of this study, three subjects such as Culture, Eco-business and Politics showed some differences in contents and tones of arguments among these three newspapers. In addition, for the National issues, tones of arguments on 4-major-rivers project were different from each other. It seems three newspapers have their own specific tone of argument in those sections. And keyword-networks showed different shapes with each other in the same period in the same section. It means that frequently appeared keywords in articles are different and their contents are comprised with different keywords. And the Positive-Negative classification showed the possibility of classifying newspapers' tones of arguments compared to others. These results indicate that the approach in this study is promising to be extended as a new tool to identify the different tones of arguments of newspapers.

  • The abiotic factors and the vegetation naturalness of the 13 tributary wetlands around Namgang-River were assessed to investigate the present state and to present the conservation counter plan for the wetland ecosystem of the tributaries. Assessment indices for the abiotic factors were estimated based on the dominant land use types of the riparian zone, ecological function of the upper levee, levee slope structure, artificiality and utilization intensity of the waterfront, artificiality of the revetment structure, diversity of the substrate, and severance of the transverse. The assessment index of Omi-cheon is the highest among 13 tributaries. The second was Banseong-cheon and third was Hyangyang-cheon, followed by Nabul-cheon and Yeongcheon-gang and Sugok-cheon, Jungchon- cheon, and Daegok-cheon in their order and Munsan-cheon got the lowest assessment index. Assessment indices for the vegetation naturalness were estimated based on the vegetation diversity, exotic species dominance, annual herb dominance, naturalness and peculiarity of the vegetation, and species diversity. The assessment index of Omi-cheon is the highest among 13 tributaries. The second was Sugok-cheon and third was Banseong-cheon, followed by Yeongcheon-gang, Jungchon- cheon, Jinae-cheon, Nabul-cheon, and Jisu-cheon in their order, and Yonga-cheon got the lowest assessment index. The grades of the stream naturalness were estimated based on the the naturalness indices for the abiotic factors and the vegetation naturalness. The grades of Omi-cheon is the highest among 13 tributaries as the grade I. Those of Banseong-cheon, Sugok-cheon, Yeongcheon-gang, Nabul-cheon and Jungchon-cheon, Hyangyang-cheon, Jinae-cheon, Jisu-cheon, Daegok-cheone, and Munsan-cheon and Doksan-cheon were grade II in their order, and Yonga-cheon got the lowest as the grade III. It was suggested that restoration of the simple and flat substrate, create the natural vegetation on the levee slope constructed with concrete or stone wall, and rehabilitation of the eco-bridge were demanded to improve the grades of the stream naturalness through the restoration of the tributaries for the diverse aquatic wildlife, high vegetation diversity and species diversity with the vegetation consisted of perennial herbs and trees.

  • The object of this research is to elicit the ecological wetland's creating and maintaining conditions through GIS and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) on common characteristics of wetland, by exploring the function of the long-standing and naturally created wetlands in South Han-river basin. Geomorphological, geologic, hydraulic & hydrological, pedological, environmental & ecological approaches of five categorizations were made based on the documents and precedent studies in order to perform the research object. Elicitation of the common creating and maintaining conditions on the objected wetlands through analysis of satisfactory conditions was conducted by performing an overlay analysis from the gathered information in each category and linking its result to each wetland. Also, elicitation of highly believable qualified analysis result was made by calculating the each factor's weight through application of AHP analysis method on each factor. The research result is expected to be applied effectively in suitability selection for creation of an artificial wetland and restoration and maintenance for naturally created wetlands when introducing the No Net Loss of Wetlands. In addition, with a new understanding on wetland and beyond the value of its conservativeness, this research result can be considered as a solution for Eco-Wetland's maintainable development.

  • This article aims to find method to mix a harmless hardening agent and soil generated during construction to make paving materials. The main purpose of this research is to get rid of the harmfulness(Chromium (VI), etc.) of cement which has been generally and frequently used as a hardening agent and strengthen it so that it can be used for the general foundation solidification and stabilization of civil engineering/construction structures such as dredging soil treatment, marine structure foundation treatment, surface soil stabilization, and river bank erosion prevention. NSS(Natural Stabilizer Soil) used for this study takes as its chief ingredient the mixture of lime and staple fibers extracted from natural fibers. It increases the shearing strength of soil that it improves the support and durability of the foundation and prevents flooding and frost as well. The pH measured to know its eco-friendliness was 6.67~7.15, and according to the migration testing, only Pb and CN were lower than the standards, so it can be said that NSS has almost no harmful components in it. According to the result of uniaxial strength testing, when the mixture ratio of weathered soil to NSS was 6%, about 1,850kpa strength was expressed. And according to the result of CBR. testing to figure out its appropriateness as a paving material, the CBR of the foundation was 4%~6%. But when the mixture ratio of NSS is over 6%, the water immersion CBR. is over 100%; thus, it is expected that it will show great utility as a paving material.

  • In this study, not only to present the management plan but also to verify the effectiveness for a area of improving the landscape and the area of creating the base of bio-inhabitation in Tancheon stream concrete embankment where were practised the vegetation-mat measures for greening via monitoring i.e. restoration progress. The results of monitoring, there were a total of 41 taxa, 18 families, 38 species, 3 varieties in 2006, moreover in the 2007, there were a total of 59 taxa, 19 families, 56 species, 3 varieties and in the period 2008, 64 taxa, 29 families, 59 species, 8 varieties. Therefore, these site has increased the plant spaces year by year. The distribution of vegetation characteristics shows that Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Pennisetum alopecuroides expands their influence in the area of applying the construction method. Those area appears a diversity of native species by the stream deposition at the flood. Thus, its condition is very soundly ecological health and eco-friend. At present, native species have been dominant, however, disturbed species and invasive species can be expected to increase dramatically in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to a long-range monitoring and management for maintaining an environmentally sound aquatic ecosystem. On this area refer to mix the river vegetation of primary succession and disturbed vegetation. For that reason, the method of constructing the vegetation-mat measures for greening in embankment does not need to remove the concrete and can install a coir-mat on the top. It leads to improve the landscape, moreover, it was analysed the such dramatic changes in the vegetation species richness by providing continuous the plant growth basis have a impact on in bio-diversity.

  • Rising sea levels along the coast from global warming causes the increase of wave energy along the coast. This rise in sea levels results in relatively deep water levels, which would incur the loss of sand that had not occurred in the past from erosion in coastal areas. Generally, it has been challenging to protect against coastal erosion, and the slope, cross-sectional shape, and materials are selected for the site conditions depending on the change in external forces. However, the application of counter measures based on insufficient understanding of the phenomenon is causing various damage, indicating the need for technological development and converging technologies to improve credibility. In this study, we developed eco-friendly permeable biopolymer concrete blocks to control the coastal erosion by using the Bio-Coast, an effective porous structure that mitigates the destructive erosion caused by the rising sea levels. The hexagonal design of Bio-Coast was derived from the honeycomb, columnar joints, and clover, which are durable and stable structures in nature, and the design was changed to apply bumps on the Bio-Coast filling in the form of a clover to reduce wave overtopping and run-up. Applying the field condition of beaches on the east coast of Korea, the block weight and size were decided and the prototype blocks were manufactured and are ready for field placement. In particular, it is intended to protect coastal areas from destructive erosion by natural and artificial external forces, and to extend the design to river,s lakes, and natural walking trails, to improve the efficiency of quality control and process control through the use of blocks.

  • Blooms of the small centric diatom Stephanodiscus is quite occasional in winter season in temperate freshwater ecosystems. Often, it leads to degradation of water quality and affects quality of supplied drinking water. In previous studies, naphthoquinone (NQ) compounds have been shown to be effective and selective for controlling winter bloom species Stephanodiscus hantzschii. We conducted a 5 ton scale mesocosm experiment to investigate the effects of NQ on native Stephanodiscus sp. collected from Nakdonggang River in water. After treatment with NQ 4-6 compound (0.2 μM), the cell density of Stephanodiscus sp. was rapidly reduced from 5 × 103 cells mL-1 to 0.2 × 103 cells mL-1 for 10 days. Additionally, NQ 4-6 compound did not affect physicochemical factors (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, nutrients) and biological factors (bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, zooplankton). Therefore, these findings suggest that the NQ 4-6 compound has potential as an alternative algicidal substances to effectively mitigate natural Stephanodiscus sp. blooms, and the application of NQ 4-6 compound will restore the healthy aquatic ecosystems.

  • Habitat characteristics and feeding ecology of Iksookimia pacifica were investigated in this study to provide baseline data for its ecological characteristics in Bukcheon (stream), Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea. The main inhabit of I. pacifica was found to be sand bottoms of Bb or Bc river type with slow water flow. Based on studies of their habitat preferences according to age, their preference for sand bed was the same. However, their preference for depth and velocity was different. When their age was increased, their depth preference was also increased ($24.9{\pm}17.61cm$ for 0+ year, $69.6{\pm}30.32cm$ for 1+ year, $82.4{\pm}33.30cm$ for 2+ years, and $90.0{\pm}31.55cm$ for $3+{\leq}$ years). The water velocity was found to be 3.8 ~ 4.0 cm/sec for ages between 0+ and 1+ and 6.0 ~ 7.3 cm/sec for ages between 2+ and $3+{\leq}$. They were active on sand from March to November. They would hibernate in sand during the winter season. During the day from 12 pm to 24 am, they were highly active with high food consumption. Their main food sources analyzed with index of relative importance (IRI) include Chironomidae (76.7%), Simuliidae (10.3%), Rotatoria (7.3%), and Arcellidae (2.2%). Their juveniles (total length 20~40 mm) would feed on small-sized preys such as Rotatoria, Copepoda, and Arcellidae. Older I. pacifica would feed on big-sized preys such as Chironomidae and Simuliidae.

  • Recently, the utilization of recycled aggregates for backfilling a power transmission pipeline trench has been considered due to the issues of eco-friendly construction and a lack of natural aggregate resource. It is important to identify the physical and thermal properties of domestic recycled aggregates that can be used as a backfill material. This paper evaluated thermal properties of concrete-based recycled aggregates with various particle size distributions. The thermal properties of the recycled aggregates and river sand provided by local vendors were measured using the transient hot wire method and the transient needle probe method after performing the standard compaction test. The needle probe method considerably overestimated the thermal resistivity of recycled aggregates especially at the dry of optimum water content because of experiencing disturbance while the needle probe is being inserted into the specimen. Similar to silica sand, the thermal resistivity of recycled aggregates decreased when the water content increased at a given dry density. Also, this paper evaluated some of the existing prediction models for the thermal resistivity of recycled aggregates with the experimental data, and developed a new prediction model for recycled aggregates. This study shows that recycled aggregates can be a promising backfill material substituting for natural aggregates when backfilling the power transmission pipeline trench.
