  • Effect of CaO addition on age hardening response has been studied by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis in AZ91 and CaO-containing ECO-AZ91 alloys. After solution treatment, the ${\beta}$($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) phase formed during solidification mostly disappeared in the microstructure in the AZ91 alloy, whereas numerous ${\beta}$ precipitates containing Ca were still observed in the ECO-AZ91 alloy due to its enhanced thermal stability. The ECO-AZ91 alloy showed the delayed peak aging time and higher peak hardness compared with those of the AZ91 alloy. The activation energies for ${\beta}$ precipitation calculated by means of Kissinger method increased from 71.4 to 85.6 kJ/mole by the addition of CaO, which implies that CaO plays a role in reducing ${\beta}$ precipitation rate in the AZ91 alloy.

  • As the sustaindble development becomes the main goal of the global world in the 21st century, it is important that technological innovations should be realized ecologically sound based on co-evolutionalry approach. From this perspective, the trans-disciplinary research method is gaining importance in the evaluation process of public funded R&D, especially in the environmental technology. In our evaluation research on the R&D projects of the $CO_2$reduction and sequestration technology in Korea, we attempt to apply a trans-disciplinary integrated method on the concept of the eco-innovation, the technology push and the market pull. Also, we try to develop the trans-disciplinary indicators of the environmental technology evaluation. This research confirms the necessity of trans-disciplinary research among the three academic perspectives, engineering, social sciences and public policy.

  • This study focuses on the technology to reduce destruction and damages of an ecosystem in the process of road construction. The authors investigated the ecological conservation activities and restoration technology which were applied to the construction of 2 bridges in Japan. The key results are as following : First, the most important thing in constructing eco-road was the linear design. Second, we need to adopt the environmental construction forms and materials to the design of structure. Finally, we have to use environment-friendly methods for the sake of the ecosystem at the real construction stage. Adopting those technologies has at least a few merits. First, we can achieve out goals : conservation and restoration in the local habitat. Second, we can save money instead of building a eco-bridge. There is a further advantage which makes it possible to develop environment-friendly technologies than before by drawing developers' attention.

  • This study was conducted to investigate farmers' satisfaction in organic farming technologies developed by the Rural Development Administration (RDA). The survey targeted farmers who were eco-friendly or interested in eco-friendly agriculture. 70% of the target farmers were doing eco-friendly farming, and the satisfaction rate of the technology developed by the RDA was 3.85 points. The satisfaction of the farmers who participated in demonstration and demonstration of the farming field of the developed technology was 4.00 and the satisfaction level of organic farming instruction manual was 3.95. In addition, 38.4% of the surveyed areas were found to be pest control areas, and the impacts on the satisfaction of the organic cultivation related technology utilization and the satisfaction of the organic cultivation guide were analyzed. As a result, the RDA needs to develop and supply customized technology for aged small farmers.

  • The dependency of the rate of $CO_2$ reforming of methane on the catalyst loading and the reactor size was examined at a fixed temperature of $750\;^{\circ}C$ and a fixed GHSV of 18000 mL(STP)/$g_{cat}.h$. The conversion of methane in $CO_2$reforming decreased with increase in the reactor size. The catalyst was severely deactivated with increase in the catalyst amount. The amount of carbonaceous species combustible below $550\;^{\circ}C$, determined by TPO experiments with the used catalyst samples increased with increase in the catalyst amount, which was again confirmed by XRD and TEM experiments. The increase of the carbonaceous species combustible below $550\;^{\circ}C$ may be due to the suppression of the reverse Boudouard reaction, since the $CO_2$ reforming of methane, a highly endothermic reaction, resulted in lowering the reaction temperature.

  • Many studies have been conducted on the indiscriminate use of plastic due to the environment problems it has caused all over the world. This problem can be mitigated by using eco-friendly/biodegradable plastics that can be decomposed by microorganisms or enzymes. This study focused on addressing the plastic golf tees that are thrown away at golf courses. In order to replace conventional golf tees (ABS) with a more eco-friendly alternative, this study explored a biodegradable plastic and 3D printing method for producing golf tees. Among the biodegradable plastics, PLA (polylactic acid) was found to be a good candidate as an eco-friendly material because it is biodegradable by microorganisms. Thus, golf tees were prepared by using PLA via 3D printing, and the physical and chemical properties of the tees were evaluated. The amorphous region of PLA was confirmed through XRD. Also, FT-IR showed the unique peak of PLA without impurities. It was confirmed through an optical microscope that the specific surface area and roughness had increased. This structure plays a role in firmly fixing the golf tee when it is inserted into the ground. In addition, it was possible to improve the compressive load compared to ABS golf tees while also decreasing the compressive stretching.

  • In order to understand the effects of the main components of antifoaming agents on the marine benthic ecosystem when silicone-based antifoaming agents are discharged into marine environments, eco-toxicity testing was performed on silicone and alcohol-based antifoaming agent by using benthic amphipod (Monocorophium acherusicum) and luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri). The toxic effects of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a main component of silicone-based antifoaming agents on aquatic organisms were also researched. In the results of the eco-toxicity test, luminescent bacteria showed a maximum of 9 times more toxic effects than benthic amphipod for alcohol-based antifoaming agents, and silicone-based antifoaming agents showed a maximum of 400 times more toxic effects than alcohol-based. The $LC_{50}$ and $EC_{50}$ values of PDMS ranged from 10 to $44,500{\mu}g/L$ in phytoplankton, invertebrate, and fish. In the results of applying PBT (P: persistency, B: bioaccumulation, T: toxicity) characteristics as an index showing the qualitative characteristics of PDMS, persistency (P) and bioaccumulation (B) were confirmed. Thus, when PDMS is discharged to marine environments, it could accumulate in the upper trophic level through bioaccumulation and the food chain, which could have negative effects on benthic organisms. The results of this study may be used for objective and scientific risk assessment, considering the major components of antifoaming agents when investigating the effects of various discharged antifoaming agents in marine ecosystem.
