The survey of weed population in paddy field was carried out to invegstigate the weed group on 340 fields in Kyonggi Area in 1991. The weed species observed include 4 species of grasses, 7 species of sedges, and 14 species of broadleaf weeds, and the ratio of annual weed vs perennial weed was 25 : 75. Major dominant weed species were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli and Cyperus serotinus. The dominant weed species in South Plain Region were Echinochloa crusgalli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitariu trifolia, Cyperus strotinus, in West Coast Region were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus serotinus, in East Interior Region were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus difformis and were Sagitaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Echinochloa crusgalli and Monochoria vaginalis in North Region. The dominant weed species in Normal and Poorly drained soil were Eleocharis kuroguwdi, Sagitaria trifolia, Echinochloa crusgalli and Cyperus serotinus and were Scirpus maritinus, Cyperus serotinus, Echinochlod crusgalli and Myriophyllum verticillatum in Saline Soil. More and many weeds were growing in single cropped field than double cropped field.
To investigate the physiological and biochemical differences between susceptible and tolerant species of Echinochloa species to the foliar applied cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim herbicides, herbicidal response, the rate of absorption, translocation and metabolism were studied. Among 148 individuals of Echinochloa species collected from 41 sampling sites in Korea which were classified into 7 geographical regions, based on morphological characteristics of plant and seed type, 46 lines were used for further studies. From them, E. crus-galli var. praticola collected from Hwanggan and E. crus-galli var. crus-galli collected from Namyangju were selected as the most susceptible species to cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim, respectively. Meanwhile, E. oryzicola(from Cheju) and E. crus-galli var. crus-galli(from Asan) were selected as tolerant species to cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim, respectively. Application of radio-labelled herbicides on the 1st leaf to both susceptible and tolerant Echinochloa species exhibited that the applied $^{14}C$-Cyhalofop-butyl and $^{14}C$-pyribenzoxim were more easily absorbed and translocated into stem tissues than root. Absorption of $^{14}C$-Cyhalofop-butyl increased rapidly at 1 h after application and reached the maximum at 12 h after application. However, the absorption rate of $^{14}C$-pyribenzoxim was not changed. Two metabolites from cyhalofop-butyl-treated plants and one metabolite from pyribenzoxim-treated plants were separated by TLC. The amount of metabolite 1 in cyhalofop-butyl-treated tolerant species was significantly higher than that in the susceptible one, suggesting differences in detoxification ability between susceptible and tolerant species.
The experiment was carried out at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1984 and 1990 to obtain the basic information on kneeing responses of rice cultivars and Echinochloa species. Kneeing response of rice cultivars was not directly related with cultivar group(Tongil-type vs Japonica-type), maturity, culm length, or other agronomic traits and thus concluded that kneeing ability was soly peculiar cultivar character based on its genetic background. Cultivars having relatively great kneeing ability were Yeongdeog 1(Japonica), Seogwangbyeo(Tongil-type). Somjinbyeo(Japonica), Pungsanbyeo(Tongil -type), Hangangchalbyeo(Tongil-type), etc. while these for low kneeing ability cultivars were Chilseoungbyeo, Gayabyeo, and Samgangbyeo that were all belonged to Tongil-types, respectively. Two Echinochloa species were not much differed from each other in kneeing ability. However, kneeing ability of Echinochloa species was much greater than rice cultivars. Kneeing ability of Echinochloa species was not differed by culm node order : all the visual nodes(5~6 nodes) exhibited similar kneeing ability having more or less 30${\circ}$ in each node.

The equilibrium moisture contents (EMC) in seeds of four Echinochloa (E. crus-galli var. crus-galli, E. crus-galli var, echinata, E. crus-galli var. praticola, E. esculenta) were measured at $20^{\circ}C$ with equilibration over a series of lithium chloride solutions with relative humidities ranging from 0.11 to 0.8 to determine sorption isotherms and safe storage relative humidity. Standard seed sorption isotherm models i.e. modified Henderson, modified Chung-Pfost, modified Halsey, modified Oswin and Guggenheim-Anderson-deBoer (GAB) equations were adopted to evaluate the goodness of fit to sorption isotherms. This study indicated that EMC of seeds was significantly different in four Echinochloa species at various relative humidity. The modified Oswin equations for E. crus-galli var. crou-galli, E. crus-galli var, echinata, E. esculenta and GAB equation for E. crus-galli var. praticola were adequate models for the EMC data. Seeds of four Echinochloa species have monolayer moisture contents when stored at RH < 0.1. These results show that seed moisture isotherm model should be selected according to genetic variation.
Echinochloa species collected from 13 places of Korea appeared to be morphologically very different. They were classified by Yabuno's seed morphology method into two species such as Echinochloa oryzicola and Echinochloa crus-galli which have two varieties such E. crus-galli var, cuss-galli and var, praticola. Among them, E. oryzicola was morphologically similar to Oryza sativa, but it had small leaf length with straight from, no awn, late heading and little interspecific variance. As compared with E. oryzicola, E. eras-galli var. crus-galli, and var, praticola showed a great variance exerting so difficulty in classifing them morphologically, particularly a great variance in leaf length, tiller number and grain size. E. oryzicola species showed the more sensitive response to butachor and thiobencarb herbicides than E. eras-galli var. praticola and var. eras-galli. However, E. eras-galli var. praticola was themore sensitive one to pretilachloa herbicide than such as E. oryzicola and E. eras-galli var. eras-galli, indicating that Echinochloa species might have a selective response to the annual herbicides tested.
Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch (Na-do-non-pee), was found at paddy fields of Jeonranamdo on a large scale after a first discovery at Masan, Kyeongsangnamdo. This species was not easily distinguished from rice before flowering at the paddy field because of a similar morphology to rice. It is, however, distinguished from other species of the Korean Echinochloa by reliable morphological characters such as horizontal or drooping panicles at maturity, lower glumes with usually 1/4-2/5 as long as the spikelets, awned lower lemmas, and the number of chromosomes, 2n = 54. Echinochloa oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger was distinguished from E. oryzoides by erect panicles, lower glumes with at least 1/2 as long as the spikelets, and the number of chromosomes, 2n = 36.
Restoration of ecosystems degraded by heavy metal pollution can be accomplished by soil amendment and selection and utilization of plants tolerant to heavy metals. Two former zinc mine sites, Sambo Mine in Hwasung, Kyonggi-do and the Second Yonhwa Mine in Samchuk, Kangwon-do, were selected for collection of plant samples and for determination of heavy metal tolerant species. Dominant species on mine waste deposits in Hwasung site were Panicum bisulcatum and Echinoch/oa crus-galli, while those in Samchuk site were Aster yomena, Setaria viridis, Artemisia lavandulaefolia and Oenothera odorata. Mean contents of zinc, lead and cadmium in Hwasung soil were 103, 117 and 1 ppm, respectively, while those in Samchuk soil were 23, 6 and 4 ppm, respectively, Zinc contents were higher in Echinochloa crus-galli from Hwasung and in Artemisia lavandulaefolia from Samchuk, while lead contents were higher in Panicum bisulcatum and Echinochloa crus-galli from Hwasung and Lactuca sonchiJolia and Pinus densiJolia from Samchuk. Plant species with higher cadmium contents were Panicum bisulcatum and Lactuca sonchiJolia. Comparison of metal contents between roots and shoots showed that Echinochloa crus-galli was a zinc accumulator, while Panicum bisulcatum, Persicaria hydroPiPer, Pinus densiJlora and Lactuca sonchiJolia were zinc excluders. In addition, Panicum bisulcatum and Persicaria hydroPiPer were proved to be lead excluders. When both heavy metal contents in plant tissues and biomass of individual plants are considered, it can be concluded that Echinochloa crus-galli and Panicum bisulcatum from Hwasung and Artemisia lavandulaefolia and Aster yomena are heavy metal absorbing plants. The effect of heavy metals on seed germination showed that Artemisia princeps var. orientalis had higher germination rates, but no significant difference in concomitant decrease of germination rates among the species investigated were found by increasing heavy metal contents.
The effects of simulated acid rain on the growth and interspecific competition of Echinochloa crus-galli and Digitaria sanguinalis were studied. Changes of growth in height and dry weight were examined and competition between the two species was investigated using the experimental model proposed by de Wit (1960). The experiments were carried out in the greenhouse, and test plants were germinated and grown for 4 weeks and then sprayed with simulated acid rain of pH 5.6, 4.2 and 2.8 for another 8 weeks. In de Wit replacement experiments, the variation of density and the treatment of simulated acid rain showed little effect on the interspecific competition between E. Crus-galli and D.sanguinalis. The ratio diagram, another method to reveal the interrelations between two competing species, always showed the predominance of E. crus-galli in competition, regardless of density and pH. The interspecific competition of the two species, represented by relative yield total (RYT), revealed that intraspecific competition was stronger than interspecific competition in both species. The treatment of simulated acid rain showed little effect on the growth of E. Crus-galli and D. sanguinalis. Height growth of both species did not differ from that of control (pH 5.6), but root/shoot ratio increased with the decrease in pH of simulated acid rain. Growth of tatal dry weight of E. crus-galli and D. sanguinalis was not influenced by the change of pH, except that D.sanguinalis showed a decrease in the total dry weight at pH 2.8 along with a visible sign of white spots on leaves. Physical environmental conditions can exert an effect on the interrelationships between the two species, but this experiment did not show the reversion of competition, and showed that E.crus-gilli was competitively dominant under any environmental conditions given in this study.
The Rural Development Administration of Korea conducted a series of surveys of paddy weeds from 1971 to 2013 in approximately 10-year cycles and the results have been used for the efficient weed management of paddy fields. In 1971, annual weeds such as Rotala indica, Eleocharis acicularis f. longiseta, and Monochoria vaginalis were dominant. In 1981, the population of Echinochloa species decreased whereas broadleaf weeds such as M. vaginalis, Sagittaria pygmaea, and S. trifolia were dominant. In 1991, perennial weeds such as Eleocharis kuroguwai, S. pygmaea, and S. trifolia were dominant over annual weeds. In 2000, M. vaginalis was the most abundant species, followed by E. kuroguwai, Echinochloa species, and S. trifolia. In 2013, herbicide-resistant Echinochloa species and M. vaginalis were most dominant, followed by E. kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, and S. trifolia. It has been predicted that the prevalence of Echinochloa species will continue to increase and that perennial weeds will be more abundant than annual ones in the near future. The occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds and exotic weeds will also increase due to global warming and changes in agricultural patterns.
Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch is one of major troublesome weeds in the paddy fields in Korea. The Korean name and scientific name of the species has been controversial among researchers. The Korean names 'Nonpee' and 'Gangpee' are being used interchangeably and the application of its scientific name is being confused. The committee composed of the Korea National Arboretum and the Korean Society of Plant Taxonomists has agreed in the use of 'Nonpee' as the Korean name. Therefore, we suggest to use the agreed name of the species for researchers to avoid confusion. In addition, the application of scientific names is also confused with E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch and E. oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger. E. oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger should be applied to the known 'Nonpee' and E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch should be applied to the unrecorded 'Nadononpee' discovered in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do.
